creamytaco··on My worst tech interview experience
They do, we had plenty of dead weight at Google, usually acquihires.
creamytaco··on Ask HN: How Do You Deal with Perfectionism in Coding?
Python is a mess of bad design, it gives you plenty of rope to hang yourself regarding approaches to a problem. I suggest learning a language like Go, where the Python motto "There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it" is actually true.
creamytaco··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
Any smart, sufficiently motivated engineer can get hired at one of these (which are a lot more than just FAANG) companies and make top dollar.

Realistically, the vast majority of "senior engineers" stuck at random company are not really senior engineers skill-wise. Which is why they stay there year after year.

creamytaco··on Books that changed my career as a software engineer
Not a single one of these books is worth reading imo.
creamytaco··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
I was making, on average, 600k a year at Google, 5 years ago. I hear it's a lot better these days.

The "deadend salary progression" allowed me to retire at 40.

creamytaco··on The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018)

creamytaco··on The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018)
We know aluminum is harmful and implicated in multiple serious health conditions. The only unknown here is the degree of aluminum leeching from the pot to the coffee. For something you do twice a day, this is a different kind of preventable exposure to risk than eating red meat or living in a polluted city.

IMO one would be a fool to accept this risk, even if small.

creamytaco··on The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018)
You're not worried about Alzheimer's disease? Even if there is no current moka pot-specific evidence (there haven't been a lot of studies), why take the chance?
creamytaco··on Ask HN: What are the early signs of singularity?
Here are some early signs of the anti-singularity:

+ Intelligence is decreasing worldwide, due to both accumulation of mutations detrimental to intelligence (dysgenics) and differential fertility (less intelligent people having on average the most children)

+ Modern society dominated by cancerous/parasitic bureaucracies (inefficiency generators)

+ Degradation of the definition of genius and societies hostile to genius

+ Dwindling number of genius individuals

+ Consequently, massive decrease in the number of ground-breaking inventions and scientific breakthroughs

As intelligence continues to decline, growth will reverse into decline and inefficiency, as the ability of people to sustain, repair, and maintain, the highly technical, specialized and coordinated world civilization will be lost.

Collapse and new dark age.

creamytaco··on There are infinite worlds to explore
I instantly realized this "art" was generated by computers since it has all the characteristics of computer-generated "art": All surface and no substance. Which is why it's not really Art.
creamytaco··on Alan Kay at UCLA (2016) [video]
Akan Kay is obviously referring to "genius", someone who is able to see things outside of the consensus POV and make leaps that others can't. Alas, this is not transferable through language. There have been precious few that fit the characterization of genius, and fewer still recognised today, due to contempary societal conditions being actively hostile to it: https://geniusfamine.blogspot.com/
creamytaco··on .NET 6 vs .NET 5 speedup
Running on Linux doesn't tell us much in itself. Can it compete with long-established alternatives on that platform? Does it have adoption? I think the answer to both these questions is a strong no.
creamytaco··on .NET 6 vs .NET 5 speedup
Is .NET relevant even on Windows these days? With MSFT's Linux embrace ever tightening, why would anyone without sunk costs invest in .NET when every alternative seems to be better (or quickly getting there)?
creamytaco··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
I've used a Japanese Topre daily for 10 years, didn't replace anything and it still works and feels like new.
creamytaco··on U.S. Labor Force 75 and Older Expected to Grow 96.5 Percent by 2030
I wouldn't wear that shirt if you paid me. I bet half of it is plastic ("polyester") unhealthy and damaging to the environment in 100 different ways.

I'll stick with plain old cotton, you can keep the "anti-microbial, moisture-wicking, flame-resistant, form-fitting-yet-maneuverable tactical shirt" and -hopefully- avoid the associated cancer(s) .

creamytaco··on California tries to close the gap in math, but sets off a backlash
You described arithmetic, not calculus [1].

creamytaco··on Heroes of Might and Magic V – Hammers of Bait and Switch
This was a 5 minute job with windbg. If I was the author I'd be too embarrassed to post this write-up.
creamytaco··on Why Lisp? (2015)
I'm not exactly a Lisp fan (I'm firmly in the statically typed camp), but this is a weak argument. Common Lisp specifically is one of the most cohesive experiences one can find out there, the language has had a long time to mature, it's ANSI standardized and the ecosystem is largely built on top of that cohesive base.
creamytaco··on Space-Related Applications of Forth (1998)
Before I left SV (and consequently, US) I consulted for a startup focusing on hard-realtime control systems. I found out that Forth is widely used in multiple embedded domains but unlike most popular programming languages this usage is not advertised (or deliberately kept secret even) since the language is considered to be a competitive-edge powerhouse.
creamytaco··on Cognitive Warfare Project
I find this comically out of touch with reality. To think that the most powerful information replicators of our age can be under the control of some mythical centralized entity (USA) so that “everyone else is losing this battle” is to be so ignorant about the way technology operates (non-linearity, meta-level control) as to completely and utterly miss the point.
creamytaco··on Gunship “Tech Noir” Breakdown
Fruity loops is great, since it comes with everything you need. Reason used to be another good choice but I haven't used it in many years.

The best advice I was given relating to this exact question (20 years ago) was to invest in a midi keyboard, stick with one piece of software and use my free time experimenting with it. That's it. Watching youtube videos is a complete waste of time in my opinion, since a lot of that crowd has fallen into the trap of reviewing one plugin after another, without really being able to create art. At best it's a circlejerk of mimicry and patterned-knowledge regurgitation.

creamytaco··on Idiomatic Clojure without sacrificing performance
Pretty sure that this isn't the post's purpose but it makes me want to never touch Clojure. I'm obviously not used to it however I can't help but think that it takes serious mental gymnastics to consider the "optimized" code the author came up with as even remotely good, from readability / comprehensibility / extensibility perspective.
creamytaco··on Genetic Evolution Was a Prelude to Mimetic Evolution
I've never read anything that wasn't a bad regurgitation of ideas better presented elsewhere from this guy, and I have to wonder why he has amassed such a following.
creamytaco··on Overly analytical guide to escorting
I don’t need to have the escort experience to know it sucks. Not only have I had close friends that did (there was a group at Google that started out as typical virgin nerds and dabbled in high class escorts) but reading those escort testimonials should make it more than clear that the forced for-money experience is far inferior to actual sexual chemistry.
creamytaco··on Overly analytical guide to escorting
This sounds completely off the mark for anyone that is moderately attractive, outgoing whilst possessing intelligence and social skills (I know, such a high bar to clear amongst SV types). The fact is, if one is above average in these areas, sex with attractive females doesn't cost one anything besides the time one puts in for the experience itself.

Throwing money at escorts is such a loser move (and the experience so far away from sex with a woman that truly desires you) that only someone who's never experienced the latter would seriously argue for paying 1200$ to have 20 minute sex with "an attractive, intelligent person for company, who is skillful at flattering men."

creamytaco··on Apple Joins Blender Development Fund
Blender won, in a few years it will kill every and all competition. It is a great example of open source disrupting markets that have been traditionally entirely dominated by proprietary software.
creamytaco··on Phrack Issue 70
This seems to me like you're talking more about your background and particular bubble rather than give any sort of "overseer" insight about a phenomenon whose various aspects and manifestations you seem painfully unaware of.
creamytaco··on Phrack Issue 70
Corporate power, greed and profiteering is a much more substantial cause for the devastation of the "community". It used to be that hackers hacked (read the_uT prophile for a good definition on what hacking is) and -for the most part- stayed quiet. With everyone and his dog selling out to the highest bidder and maxing out self-promotion in his character sheet, that's certainly no longer the case. This is also reflected in (current) Phrack articles and authors, they're no longer an expression of the underground but of the corporate/infosec sphere that they belong to.

The underground these days is to be found on 4chan and other related (or not) subcultures, just like the_uT wrote more than 12 years ago, but certainly not in infosec.

creamytaco··on Confessions of a Michelin Star Inspector
If you do a wine blind taste test I bet you'll discover you're throwing your money away.
creamytaco··on I quit – Peak indifference, big tobacco
Sounds like you haven't tried it.

First few packs are disgusting, one is not used to nicotine so can get vicious headaches and nausea, the smoke is harsh and irritates your nostrils and your throat. Once you get addicted to nicotine and your tolerance builds up smoking becomes enjoyable since, since the nicotine high kicks in at maximum effect.
