creaghpatr··on Snowflake says Frank Slootman is retiring as CEO; stock plunges 20%
Possibly, but Slootman had a personal brand from his book Amp it Up that came out recently. The book (which he wrote) obviously painted himself as a transformative executive, which I don't necessarily disbelieve. Personally, I thought the book was good though it advocates a sort of David Goggins-esque "Stay hard" approach to company culture, for better or worse.
creaghpatr··on Walmart in talks to buy TV maker Vizio for more than $2B
First thing I thought of when I saw this article
creaghpatr··on Once the world's largest, the Pennsylvania Hotel goes 'poof' before our eyes
RIP. I stayed here the first time I visited NYC, mainly on account of the location and price. It felt enormous and check-in was pretty chaotic given the amount of people checking in but it felt like an authentic intro to the city.

That said, it was pretty grimy. Don't blame them for tearing it down, it's way too big to preserve as some kind of historical boutique hotel.

creaghpatr··on Unexpected benefits of sun exposure on skin
>My go-to sunscreen of choice is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch.

Agree, and this is the only brand I've tried that truly crosses the dry-touch threshold. It's a shame that it's more expensive and not commoditized yet (figured it would be by now since it's been on the market for several years).

creaghpatr··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
Haven't seen that theory before, very interesting and makes sense.
creaghpatr··on Hackers are reportedly getting laid off by organized crime groups
Implicit non-disparagement clause
creaghpatr··on David Guetta uses ChatGPT and uberduck.ai to deepfake Eminem rap for DJ set
>So he’s more likely to just drop a mean word about David Guetta in a track in the future and call it even than to take him to court.

He could use AI to produce a track in the style of David Guetta and rap over that, would be pretty clever.

creaghpatr··on Salesforce will lay off 10% of staff as part of restructuring
Happened in Mexico too (may have been fictional or based on real events),in a great book I read once: https://www.fantasticfiction.com/b/rick-bass/diezmo.htm
creaghpatr··on Bra size calculator
Relatedly- do bespoke bra makers exist? Like Indochino but for bras? Seems like the kind of thing that would be worth spending extra for premium fit.
creaghpatr··on Things to argue about over the holidays instead of politics
Might be my favorite HN comment of 2022
creaghpatr··on Skilled tech workers snapped up despite downturn
>Unlike a month ago, my LinkedIn is EMPTY in terms of recruiter messages.

A lot of in-house recruiters may have been laid off during that time, so might not directly correlate with new job postings volume/quality (obviously still related though).

On the upside, wherever you land, they are more likely to be investing thoughtfully rather than tacking on headcount.

creaghpatr··on Facial recognition tech gets woman booted from Rockettes show due to employer
Guessing their on-site security stack must not be integrated with their transaction platform. Or someone else could have paid for the tickets.
creaghpatr··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account

creaghpatr··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
"Content that shares location information related to a public engagement or event, such as a concert or political event, is also permitted." Literally the next sentence in the thread linked.
creaghpatr··on Theranos exec Sunny Balwani sentenced to 13 years in prison
Didn't work out so well for Osama Bin Laden.
creaghpatr··on Why hasn’t Sam Bankman-Fried been arrested yet?
Should be a question for Good Judgement Open, would be interested to see what superforecasters predict.
creaghpatr··on The New Smoking (2021)
If anything, tiktok/instagrammers are too prevalent in natural areas these days, harvesting those areas for likes and influence.
creaghpatr··on Qatar to ban beer at World Cup stadiums two days before tournament starts
Sure, but they don’t ban alcohol in the entire city/country before and during the game.
creaghpatr··on The collapse of FTX and Sam Bankman-Fraud is looking quite spicy for journalism
Very helpful, here's a more accurate way of making the same point:

>"if you guys are so charitable, then why are you giving this money to political candidates and PACs, rather than to charitable causes?"

creaghpatr··on Some WFH employees now live in another country
On the bright side, we'll have 87,000 new IRS agents to catch these unwitting tax cheats.
creaghpatr··on 1 in 4 Gen Z-ers plan to become social media influencers
Many of those in the first category will likely work jobs in the latter category before, during, or after their influencer 'career'. C'est la vie.
creaghpatr··on The rise of 'stealerships' and the shady economics of car buying
I had a wild experience on Carvana. Bought the car (used, with 14k miles), they were going to ship it to my local Carvana pickup and the day before I get a message to effect of, "Hey we just tried to start your car and it's not starting so we don't recommend you buy this car" . All fees refunded, I was confused but grateful, no one followed up to try and get me to buy another car (other than garden variety email list marketing). Ended up buying a friend of a friends old car for way less two weeks later.
creaghpatr··on Snap lays off 20% of employees
Underrated comment in my opinion. Snap's long term potential lies in differentiating themselves with their hardware and UX like Apple did with the iPod /iPhone in the 2000s. An extremely hard task, but a more visible direction than a trench war with TikTok and Meta over generic social communications.
creaghpatr··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
>They have like 90 percent margins on those syrup/water mixes.

Wait, nevermind you're right about that.

creaghpatr··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Soft drinks are a loss leader for fast food, which is why judging McDos on the price of a single item like soda or mcmuffin is a bit oversimplified. Pricing strategy fluctuates (sometimes) independently of supply costs.
creaghpatr··on Ask HN: How do you deal with the emotions of customer support?
Replace customer with manager/stakeholder/etc and it's still practical advice. I used to take a lot of work-related criticism personally and had to actively practice separating myself from the situation. It never goes away but definitely gets easier to manage.
creaghpatr··on The hardest people for founders to hire are so called C-level executives
Would love to hear examples of companies bringing on an expensive CXO that transformed and empowered their teams to success. How high must the upside be here given the failure rate?
creaghpatr··on The hardest people for founders to hire are so called C-level executives
As long as you can identify which are which quickly and action then 33% hit rate can stack your roster pretty quick. Hiring takes time though, in most cases.
creaghpatr··on Bill Watterson’s refusal to license Calvin and Hobbes (2016)
Wow I never caught that!
creaghpatr··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
Psychopaths are overrepresented in surgery/EMT work if I'm not mistaken, for better or worse.
