crazcarl··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
I drove by last night around 10pm and this is in line with what I noticed. It is not anywhere near as dark as the original video shows.
crazcarl··on Announcing the Windows Bounty Program
I wonder how often it happens that a company lies (or stretches the truth) about already knowing about a vulnerability to avoid paying a bounty. If it happens even sometimes, the 10% might provide additional incentive for researches to target Microsoft. Even if they don't get a full payout, at least they get something.
crazcarl··on Amazon enables free calls and messages on all Echo devices with Alexa Calling
You can use the drop in feature for this, right?

Allow drop in between your devices in your home, and you can call one from another. Maybe they'll allow call groups and you can call to every room at once.

crazcarl··on Ask HN: I'm thinking about doing some professional listening
Maybe call it 'professional coaching', or 'executive coaching'. People that do those will definitely delve into the personal life of the client and how it all plays together with work-life.
crazcarl··on Amazon Vehicles
I bought a new headlight for my car that Amazon said would fit. It did not. Maybe it was a problem with a 3rd party that is selling through Amazon, but it was Amazon that told me it would fit and they lost my trust on car parts.
crazcarl··on Ask HN: Is there an HN type site focused on medical news?
HIStalk has Healthcare IT News and Gossip http://histalk2.com/

But it's not forum style like HN.

crazcarl··on 'Escape Rooms' Challenge Players To Solve Puzzles To Get Out
I highly recommend visiting Mr X in Shanghai if you have the opportunity. It blew the two that I've done in the US out of the water.
crazcarl··on The TV antenna is making a comeback
You don't even need a TV to take advantage of this if you have a computer.

You can buy a tv tuner card that will connect to your laptop and allow you to plug in an antenna to watch TV.

Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1191-WinTV-HVR-955Q-Tuner-No...

crazcarl··on Why Your Brain Hates Slowpokes
The conclusion (spoiler alert) that showing gratitude can help fight the negative emotional reaction to impatience sounds a lot like stoicism. Particularly the idea that you should think about the positive things that you have, rather than the negative thing happening to you right now (being stuck in a slow moving line).
crazcarl··on Audio Tour App Detour Steers You Away from the Typical Tourist Traps
User driven content on something like this seems like it would pretty quickly lead to routes popping up which lead the users to the author's "not a tourist-trap" restaurant or store.
crazcarl··on The world's hardest CAPTCHA
I got that as well.
crazcarl··on Don't Deal With It, Fix It
This reminds me of the George Bernard Shaw quote: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
crazcarl··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
Does this actually prevent true spammers, or only emails you consider spam, but the sender thinks is worthwhile?

Otherwise, as a 'true' spammer, why wouldn't you just always strip off everything after the plus when adding the email to your distribution list?

crazcarl··on Show HN: A sequence of online courses to learn web development from scratch
I took the course more recently (August - Oct 2013) and the forums had most of my questions already answered in the areas where more depth was needed for me to understand a concept.
crazcarl··on Show HN: No More Passwords, Just Email
Are you able to use your password manager in public places (or on a friend's laptop)? And is that secure in those cases?

If not, this might be a good second option for a site to have that doesn't involve you resetting your password:

First option - normal password Second option - email one-time key Third option - reset pw via email (if you really need to)

crazcarl··on Why are Amazon, Facebook and Yahoo copying Microsoft's stack ranking system?
How do you know the data becomes more normal as your add more people? Especially if you are performing the rankings independently on each individual.

If you feel like your company is hiring against a certain set of high standards, are your employees at the low end of the 'normalized' curve holding you back as much as the people at the high end are pushing you forward?

crazcarl··on How not to write recruiting emails
I think what the OP is arguing is that if he has an active github profile: 1. the recruiter should have done the work to check that out before emailing him. 2. his/her profile should be enough to warrant arranging a meeting/interview, and a resume would add little extra information.

If you don't have an active public place where your work is showcased, then certainly a resume is a good (more) private way to provide a potential employer your skillset. Though certainly not the only other way.

crazcarl··on Body hacking and losing weight.
You changed your diet and started exercising. Did I miss the "hacking" part?
crazcarl··on How much can an extra hour's sleep change you?
There are some products out there that attempt to measure sleep quality via leaving your phone on the bed, or wearing a bracelet. I'm not sure of the accuracy, though.

I hope these will get even better (maybe a non-intrusive headpiece that can measure brainwaves?) in the future.

crazcarl··on HP Chromebook 11
What sort of casual work would be better on a tablet than on the chromebook? Answering emails would be better with a dedicated keyboard, as would navigating in a web browser.

For casual use otherwise (movies, books, angrybirds/candy crush style games), then a tablet is probably a better tool.

crazcarl··on Reveal.js
I had not seen this before. This is pretty neat.
crazcarl··on Bots Gobble Up Restaurant Reservations in the Bay Area
Some people might want to see which restaurants have open reservations on a certain day, instead of calling around until they find one.
crazcarl··on Apple buys HopStop
Is google making good money with its maps service? Why is another larger company (Apple) trying to compete? Is there really enough money in it to make it worth it to Apple?

I'd be interested to know if they are currently making money, and if so, how.

crazcarl··on Red Bull and Business Strategy
Or really anyone who can't acquire alcohol (such as those too young).
crazcarl··on Battery Swap [video]
If you really have to reclaim YOUR battery when you come back, that means the swap place has to keep that battery in storage and ready to go (fully charged) for the next time you come back? And they can't re-rent it out.
crazcarl··on Non-Scientific Reasons To Do A PhD In The Netherlands
The comments section below the article.
crazcarl··on Obama: No warrantless wiretaps if you elect me (2008)
The difference between a third party getting 1% of the vote versus 10% could have some impact on politics even if it doesn't affect the outcome of the election.
crazcarl··on If Tesla Would Stop Selling Cars, We’d All Save Some Money
It doesn't seem all that strange or bad that the non-tesla car producers are passing along the costs to the consumer. If a company is putting their own profits into R&D for a new product they are developing, is that not same thing as passing on the costs to the consumer?

Except in this case, Honda is paying for Tesla's R&D instead of their own.

crazcarl··on The Myth of Japanese Longevity
I think your conclusion should be re-stated as

Conclusion: The average age of a population is less than 10.

Which would be true if the counter-argument was found to be correct, would it not?

crazcarl··on The Importance of Excel
I think danso's problem would also be solved by showing them pivot tables in Excel.
