The exit is that way, sir.
cptnapalm··on Orthodox Privilege (2020)
"seem to be independent thinkers, but they pretend to follow the in-group for the purpose of maintaining social harmony"

Preference falsification [0]. There's a book called Private Truths, Public Lies by Timur Kuran which delves into this.

cptnapalm··on Designing a programming language to speedrun Advent of Code
The pipeline wasn't just the fastest; it left everything else in the proverbial dust!
cptnapalm··on Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 review: Business laptop is better with AMD Zen4
I have an AMD L14. The damn keyboard has a hardware fault. I have to close and open the lid so it suspends then wakes up to get it working again. Not a great experience, obviously.

The Thinkpad I had previously had some wonky wifi chipset. Got it working, but it was a pain.

I'm not buying anything else from Lenovo.

cptnapalm··on Disney packed big emotion into a little robot
It's pretty much BD-1 from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.

cptnapalm··on Inside The Decline of Stack Exchange
This is exactly why I never click on it when I'm looking for something. It's never a solution that a search finds; it's always an question answered that it's a duplicate of something completely unrelated.
cptnapalm··on A video game where you are an operating system
Maybe write a program that plays the game for you. It could be called You're the Operating System Operating System.
cptnapalm··on Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior, Now Open Source
Have you tried looking in the sofa? I found some change I had lost last week.
cptnapalm··on Show HN: Single-Instruction (Subleq) Programming Game
One curious thing I've noted about myself playing these things is that there are some complex things I figure out and have a great cycle count. Others, I can barely figure out and I have one of the worst cycle counts which don't ever improve no matter how many times I re-try it.

cptnapalm··on Microtiming in Metallica's “Master of Puppets” (2014)
Was in a black metal band and there was this one riff we had a problem syncing up at the end for the transition to the next. Sometimes we'd nail it, other times it fell apart. Turned out that, while the drum beat was 4/4, the first riff was not. We just hadn't noticed. Once we figured that out, we hit it every time and it was glorious.
cptnapalm··on Defenestrations of Prague
Not a day has gone by where I have not been sensitive to opportunities to use the word "defenestrate".
cptnapalm··on PC CPU Shipments See Steepest Decline in 30 Years
I got an older Supermicro off eBay with 6 10Gb ports for $89.
cptnapalm··on The unequal treatment of demographic groups by ChatGPT/OpenAI content moderation
Curious that one of the ChatGPT's attributes is that it has been trained to be a shameless liar.

cptnapalm··on Names that decreased in popularity from 2020 to 2021
I'm going to take a not completely insane guess and say that it's an odd outcome of everyone going by their personal (usually first) name. Instead of 10 Jasons, each with a different family name, you get 10 different spellings of Jason and never know the family names.
cptnapalm··on Ask HN: Learn C in 2023?
When I was learning C, I found most books only skimmed pointers, a topic I was having a hard time with. Reek's Pointers on C is a beginner C book in that it goes over all the novice stuff, but it has a concentrated focus on getting you to understand pointers. I recommend it.
cptnapalm··on Bestselling books have been getting shorter
I have wondered if the reading of Don Quixote serially was a very different experience from reading it as a novel. It was a serial satire, so I could see reading the "new episode" every week being funny. Before I got side-tracked, I was reading it like any other novel and, while any particular episode is set up comedically, Don Quixote's mostly harmless delusional actions being given exponentially more brutal responses I found increasingly depressing.
cptnapalm··on Dwarf Fortress’ graphical upgrade provides a new way into a wildly wonky game
Still remember my last game from years ago. Concentric moats of lava with long drawbridges that raised to the outer side rather than inner. Goblin invasion. Waited till all of them were on the draw bridges. Raised the drawbridges and laughed as the goblins were catapulted away from my fortress, either into the lava or completely out of the local map.
