cpitman··on Data centers contribute to high prices as energy bills electrify local politics
Yeah, I was thinking of the same study. Looking at just the conversation on HN, lots of people are installing solar. Solar reduces the amount of energy used by that customer, but does not lower the cost of infrastructure to distribute power to that customer at all. And the cost of electricity is dominated by distribution and transmission, not generation. With an increased share of costs going to overhead infrastructure, the cost per watt goes up. Higher consumption increases the share of costs due to generation, and cost per watt goes down.

"Contrary to these concerns, our analysis finds that state-level load growth in recent years (through 2024) has tended to reduce average retail electricity prices. Fig. 5 depicts this relationship for 2019–2024: states with the highest load growth experienced reductions in real prices, whereas states with contracting loads generally saw prices rise."

cpitman··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
Or just pay for Youtube.... $8/ month gets rid of most of the ads in videos, $15/month to remove ads from music, shorts, and search results.
cpitman··on The vocal effects of Daft Punk
They were the official music videos for the album, looks like Daft Punk released all of them on YouTube.

This Playlist has them all in order: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSdoVPM5WnndLX6Ngmb8wktMF...

cpitman··on The vocal effects of Daft Punk
Interstella 5555 is still one of my favorite movies. It's an anime movie where the entire soundtrack is the album Discovery. There are no vocals, the entire story is told by only the animation and music, and it works incredibly well.
cpitman··on Lawmakers are skeptical of Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech
Yes, the First Amendment is about the government.

Freedom of speech, in the other hand, is part of a moral code that believes in inalienable rights, that humans implicitly have the right to express themselves. The government does not grant the right to freedom of speech, because we already have it. The first amendment says that the government must respect that right, but creating the right.

cpitman··on Benchmarking LLM social skills with an elimination game
I was looking for a more direct measure of this, how often a model "leaked" private state into public state. In a game like this you probably want to sometimes share secrets, but if it happens constantly I would suspect the model struggles to differentiate.

I occasionally try to ask a model to tell a story and give it a hidden motivation of a character, and so far the results are almost always the model just straight out saying the secret.

cpitman··on The average college student today
Considering these courses included assigned reading, and that total would include multiple novels, yes, that is cheap.
cpitman··on Solarpunk

cpitman··on IBM completes acquisition of HashiCorp
Every time you say rocket chat, I have to appear.

FWIW, the change at Red Hat has always been hard to separate between the forces of IBM and the reality of changing leadership. In a lot of ways those are intertwined because some of the new leadership came from IBM. Whatever change there was happened relatively gradually over many years.

cpitman··on "Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies" – Executive Order
Very. Election officials, across states and across parties, have been faithfully discharging their duties, often under pressure to not do so. This is a responsibility of the states, and not the federal government. If you're concerned, then work as a poll officer on election day.

In Virginia, I get to participate an incredibly professional and structured process that makes it easy for everyone who can vote to vote and makes sure there are many checks that the process is being followed correctly.

cpitman··on The Iconic 3DBenchy Enters the Public Domain
Surrendering work to the public domain is actually more complicated. It's easy to make the claim that a work is public domain, but the law may not allow you to actually relinquish all copyright claims. This also depends on which country you are in.

This is why the CC0 license exists, to attempt to provide a more legally sound equivalent to plain public domain (https://creativecommons.org/public-domain/cc0/).

cpitman··on Mark Zuckerberg: Fact-checking on Meta is too "politically biased"
How would decentralization make a difference here? Fact checking only makes sense when a platform has people with multiple different beliefs about what is true. If people can self-select into their own bubble, then it doesn't do anything, does it?
cpitman··on The Peter Principle still resonates
FWIW, this doesn't only happen with promotions to "management". Senior IC roles often come with new responsibilities, like influencing influencing technical direction, often without any "hard" power to do so. I've seen plenty of people struggle with the change in scope of their job. Some rise to it.

Or you could do what I did. Quit your job, found a startup, and be definitely incompetent at most of what you need to do.

cpitman··on The Peter Principle still resonates
This is great. I think there is a tendency to apply the Peter Principle to others (ie the boss), but it applies just as well to ourselves. How long until we are all promoted into incompetence, and how sure are we that it hasn't already happened?
cpitman··on FTC orders 'gun detection' tech maker Evolv to stop overstating effectiveness
I've also been looking at the export, but I don't see any way to filter down to "Shooting incidents". Just sampling the first 10, 10% of 2000 is looking like way less.

Were you able to find a way to validate the 900 number?

cpitman··on FTC orders 'gun detection' tech maker Evolv to stop overstating effectiveness
Looking at this database, they have a really loose definition of a "school shooting".

I'm just going in order here, no picking and choosing. Here's the link if anyone wants to follow along: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/school-shootings

1. A teacher had a gun in their possession, there was no shooting: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3099438

2. An adult robbery suspect was found by police on a high school campus, fled the police, and was then shot somewhere else: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3098506

3. Parent showed a gun during an argument with the school (this one is closer to bad, but still, no shooting): https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3098581

4. Teenager brought gun to a baseball game: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3098572

5. Adult found trespassing on campus with cocaine and a modified flare gun: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3098062

6. Students fought and showed a gun: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3098023

7. Student in possession of a gun: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3097870

8. Student in possession of a gun: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3097949

9. Adult bicyclist dropped a handgun in parking lot of campus while student basketball game was underway inside: https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/incident/3095500

10. Abundant Life Christian School

1 out of the first 10 being what most people would call a "school shooting" brings that 971 cases number into question.

cpitman··on UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot in midtown Manhattan
Sure, but there's a lot of speculation that it was a wronged customer. It could have been someone he works with. It could have been someone from his personal life. People who are not Healthcare CEO's also are murdered, there are lots of possible motives.

We don't even know that the killer got the right person.

cpitman··on UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fatally shot in Manhattan
Just want to caution everyone to not jump to conclusions. Remember when Bob Lee was shot in San Francisco and everyone assumed it was because of how unsafe San Francisco is? And then it turned out to be another tech exec?

Beyond the one motive we can think of, this person (like any person) had other things going on in their life. We have no idea what the motive was until the killer is found.

cpitman··on How good are American roads?
That would still leave the problem if determining what state they were driving in, or allocating all the revenue to their state of residence even when they drive in other states as well.

How this works in trucking is interesting. Whenever a truck fills up its tank, the driver pays the gas tax in that state. They then track how many miles they drive in each state, and then quarterly have to "correct" their gas tax by paying the states where they drive more miles than they paid taxes for and get refunded by states where they fueled but didn't drive as many miles. Trucks these days have automated systems for tracking all this.

If you are interested, this is part of IFTA, the International Fuel Tax Agreement.

cpitman··on NotebookLM launches feature to customize and guide audio overviews
Nice, I've only scratched the surface of Notebook LM, mainly for dumping lots of component reference material (datasheets, reference guides, application notes, etc). The text querying works great, but the audio overview wasn't very useful when it stuck to the high level of the content. With some ability to steer the topic out might be quite useful!
cpitman··on FTX creditors will make money on bankruptcy
Yeah, this is not creditors "making money". Anyone who had 1 bitcoin in FTX is not getting their 1 bitcoin back, which is massively more valuable.

Instead, they are getting 119% of the USD value of a bitcoin in late 2022. They are massively losing out. They are effectively getting back 33% of their assets.

cpitman··on Mitmproxy 11: Full HTTP/3 Support
Middle boxes (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middlebox) are a well known source of protocol stagnation. A protocol with extensibility usually needs the client and server to upgrade, but with middle boxes there are N other devices that potentially need updating as well. Where the user (client) and service provider (server) are motivated to adopt new feature sets, the owners of middle boxes might be far less so. In net, it makes it hard for protocols to evolve.
cpitman··on Teacher caught students using ChatGPT on their first assignment. Debate ensues
Exactly, I was CS, but took Psychology classes for my own interest. It was fun bringing a different point of view and only realizing it once we started discussing the reading material.

One time in a small seminar class on mental models the professor asked us to each draw a tree. Only once we were done and everyone started sharing their tree did I realize that I had gone straight to a directed acyclic graph. I completely forgot about the green leafy things. Everyone had a good laugh, and it was actually a good example for what were talking about.

Asking ChatGPT for what I should say during a class is just play acting at education. Really feels liek a waste of time and money.

cpitman··on OpenSCAD: The Programmer's Solid 3D CAD Modeller
The best thing about the challenges from 3d CAD Speedmodelling is that they needed a quick way to validate submissions, so they do it by validating the mass of the design. The density to use is included in the problem. The answer is on this page: https://build123d.readthedocs.io/en/latest/tttt.html#t-24-cu...
