and it's all crap. Very low quality content... especially on video. Terrible recommendations. YouTube has the same problem. Whoever is leading recs is doing a terrible job.

this so much...
cphoover··on Show HN: My unusual personal resume. Would appreciate feedback and anything else
Constructive criticism:

Images are huge and scaled down to fit the circular icons... Why not serve up an appropriately sized optimized image? This image you use is close to 4MB:

https://magarshak.com/me/community.png

Wouldn't expect this from someone with web dev experience.

Also If I'm designing/developing a website now, I always build with the expectation it will be viewed on mobile. This website is not optimized for mobile users.

Hope my comments are helpful!

cphoover··on Show HN: Devbox – Easy, predictable shells and containers
This seems like a way simpler workflow than maintaining dockerfiles. I'm interested to try this out.
cphoover··on Raft Consensus Animated (2014)
It would be cool to also see an animated visualization of the paxos consensus algorithm
cphoover··on Functional Reactive Programming
I understand this paradigm within the context of stream processing, but it seems like a weird way of modeling most REST api-based web applications.

I feel like a promise-based model makes way more sense for most simple web applications. Where you have a http request and response, a promise model seems to suffice for most applications communicating via http-requests to an API layer. Modeling as a stream doesn't make sense to me, and seems like it would over-complicate an otherwise simple mental-model.

In most of the simple web-applications I have encountered there is one or more requests made to unique endpoints for data after the document response has been completed. No need for handling multiple events from the same endpoint, debouncing, multi-casting, unsubscribing, back-pressure, or whatever else. These operations seem to make way more sense in the context of stream processing.

social/chat based finance seems ripe for fraud to me. Imagine if a facebook worm had access to your finances. How do you overcome this concern?

EDIT: I guess messenger does have it's own payment system too... which seems crazy to me.

cphoover··on Mark Zuckerberg braces Meta employees for ‘intense period’
I want to use and build tools that make my life more connected and enjoyable in the real world. I dont want to live in a ready-player-one-esque virtual world where I don't get physical connection with the people, places, and experiences I love and make life worth living. I think as I get older I'm gaining this realization more and more.

I just completed the camino de Santiago Portuguese de costa, with my girlfriend a 280km thru-hike/walk from Porto, Portugal to Santiago De Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Three weeks of reduced screen time was immensely beneficial to my state of mind and happiness.

cphoover··on Mark Zuckerberg braces Meta employees for ‘intense period’
> Kids these days grow up with all those new apps, environments, they practically live in the internet

But is it good for them? And do companies like meta care, or are they just trying to milk dollars from them.

cphoover··on Help pick a syntax for CSS nesting
I really don't find nesting to be a necessary part of the CSS spec and in fact find deeply nested CSS rules harder to reason about.
cphoover··on Bluetooth remains an 'unusually painful' technology after two decades
Same thing happens in my GFs Prius... So annoying we refer to it as an "aural assault". I can't help but think U2's release strategy was really negative publicity for them in the long run.
cphoover··on Interview with Douglas Crockford
Douglas Crockfords' "JavaScript the good parts, took me from being a mediocre JS developer to truly understanding the language's inner-workings. Highly recommend.
cphoover··on Scratch is a big deal
Very cool
cphoover··on Adding salt to food at table can cut years off your life, study finds
The original commenters point still stands though right?

Also isn't addition of salt often a sign the chef/cook messed up and under-salted a dish?

cphoover··on Air France announces end to research monkey transport
So you volunteer to replace the monkeys in experimental drug research?
cphoover··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Depends... I think if we want our economy to grow, kicking out potential workers doesn't seem to make sense.

I do think we need control of our borders though in order to enforce things like tariffs, restrict prohibited items, human trafficking etc...

cphoover··on Show HN: UI Filler – placeholders for your designs
Needs more components! but I like this.

should have lists too.

cphoover··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Much more likely to be the case, however sensationalism always makes a more viral story.
cphoover··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
FYI ICE does a lot of good work too like fighting child sex trafficking in other countries. ICE does a lot more than just immigration enforcement within the US borders.
cphoover··on Show HN: Let’s Gym, the app that lets you find a nearby Gym Partner
Stating the obvious but... this is one of those things where you need to reach a certain number of people to reach a useful network effect. You need to push hard on marketing and onboarding. I like the idea... but unless there are people on there for me to workout with, the app is useless.
cphoover··on I analyzed more than 7M developer jobs
Couldn't this also be due to personalization? Algorithms could be showing more of one language and consequently less of another.
cphoover··on People who are isolated from others do worse on cognitive tests: new research
I recommend the book Solitude by Anthony Storr for a strong counter-argument.

cphoover··on Angular without SSR is faster than Next.js with SSR
Does squirrel hair make a good paintbrush? Never knew.
cphoover··on My wonderful HTML email workflow, with MJML and MDX and Next.js
It's amazing to me that poor developers are still having to deal with email quirks. I was coding html emails in tables when I started 10+ years ago. It seems as though tooling may be better but the underlying client support is still drastically lacking. Why haven't standards body agreed upon a subset of html/css to be supported by email clients? perhaps they have and I'm unaware? I guess the issue with email is that there is so much more market fragmentation than browsers... It's just crazy to me how bad email clients support is for rich media, and how many people still rely on it as primary source of communication over newer technologies.
cphoover··on Rulex – A new, portable, regular expression language
Just looked at Rulex briefly... am I the only one that thinks it isn't obviously more readable or easy to understand? Maybe it's because I've taken the time to master regex, but this syntax seems just as opaque as terse regex syntax was to me prior to digging in.
cphoover··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
> js was, for decades, simple & easy & sparked joy.

This is total revisionism. Using JS to program anything substantial was a total nightmare in decades past. I've been building websites since the early 2000s, JS is more ergonomic and capable now than ever before IMO.

cphoover··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
I dunno I think there is a lot of historical revisionism happening in regards to how joyous coding in JavaScript used to be. I've been doing web-dev since the early 2000's, JavaScript is way more usable today than it's ever been in the past.
cphoover··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
Everyone talking about how much this would simplify their workflow from going from development with type-checking to the browser ignores that you can run a single command and remove all type annotations already... I'm not sure what this proposal solves? Perhaps there should be an added item to vscode context menu that is "copy without type annotations". I feel this would be very easy to implement...
cphoover··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
I don't think there is value in type hints that don't do anything. Especially because JS is sent over the wire. We already have a compile time type checking system called Typescript.

If you want JavaScript to enforce types in the browser that is a larger discussion.

cphoover··on TC39 Proposal: Type Annotations
Nahhhh lets get the immutable data structures (record + tuples) proposal to land, this one is of much more value IMO
