cpburns2009··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Yeah just let me grab a new board for my LED bulb, unsolder the functional LED diode, and put it on the new board.
cpburns2009··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
How many German governments have announced they're mirgrating to Linux over the years only for them to reverse course?
cpburns2009··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
Yes, Nvidia is proposing a two pronged approach. OpenShell is the software level sandbox. Sentry is the hardware level monitor.
cpburns2009··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Having a beer or two at a kids birthday party is a world away from getting trashed at a college party. Personally, I need a drink to loosen up and not be so uptight around casual acquaintances. I offer the same courtesy when I host birthday parties.
cpburns2009··on I switched to Brave
Brave blocks ads. What's the problem?
cpburns2009··on I switched to Brave
FFS people the "crypto" shit is all opt-in. It's not enabled by default. Don't mindlessly regurgitate disinformation. Yes, Brave does show ads in the new tab page by default just like Chrome and Firefox.
cpburns2009··on Rusty thoughts on "Parse, don't validate"
Thank you! I always found the quip "parse, don't validate" to be more confusing than helpful. Parsing doesn't remove the need for validation. All it does is ensures the type is right, but does nothing to validate the values for the domain.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
The keys are vital, and if you lose them you're SoL. A major hurtle is that you cannot create multiple relationships with different keys. Each key can only be used once.
cpburns2009··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
Chrono Trigger holds up very well, and much better than many PSX/N64 games. It was at the pinickle of 16bit sprite graphics. I beat it a bunch of times as a teen on an emulator. Then I bought it for the DS and beat it again several years ago. It's available on Steam.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
Right... just let me pull out my non-existent spare phone when mine breaks or gets lost.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
SSH keys are much easier to use and understand. Heck, passkeys could have just been a ZIP file holding a key-pair instead of whatever hostile design by committee we ended up with.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
It's not like physical keys at all. You can get copies made of those. Passkeys deliberately are not copyable.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
I don't care about the theoretical sufficiently advanced keypass implementation that works perfectly. I want to know about the half baked ones in the real world that I'll have to deal with.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
Great, what happens if I lose my phone?
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
Except they never considered that "complete idiots" could lose access to their phone's passkeys.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
I've been told by multiple people that the recovery method of passkeys is to enter your username/password. If passwords are eliminated, your final recourse is fucked.
cpburns2009··on I don't like passkeys
Have you ever been in a large building with awful cell reception and no wifi access?
cpburns2009··on Diplodocus, Long Thought Exclusively American, Turns Up in Spain
Poor Nessie always gets confused with her land dwelling counsins.
cpburns2009··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
It is kind of morally gray. The intent isn't to deceive. It's to help them against themselves. I've taken many kids clothes and toys from family members who no longer need them. They just don't want to throw something away that could be of use. If my young kids use them, great! If not and they're in good condition, I'll donate them to Goodwill or something. Otherwise it's going in the trash.
cpburns2009··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Here's a secret. If you have family members that you know struggle to throw stuff away, and they offer it to you, just take if their hands and dispose of it yourself.
cpburns2009··on Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
That actually never occurred to me. But it makes sense non-technical people would be skeptical of sharing a public "key". I like public address better than lock (I think lock just adds confusion).
cpburns2009··on The American Age Is Over
Ah yes, the golden age of extrajudical assassinations of American citizens, forever wars, the rise of the surveillance state, imprisonment of journalists amd whistle blowers, and the deterioration of race relations. Tell me more of this golden age.
cpburns2009··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
In a just and equal society, criminals would be prosecuted and convicted for the economic violence of theft.

Inequality is a useless measurement used to excuse antisocial behavior. The inequality between Bill Gates and I has increased exponentially in the past 20 years, yet I'm significantly better off than I was then back then. Inequality is a feel good measurement thats fundamentally the wrong target.

cpburns2009··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Porch pirates are not stealing because they're hungry. They're antisocial asshole criminals.
cpburns2009··on The case against JPEG XL
According to this source [1], a second layer can progressively provide the rest of the image data:

> Note: AVIF supports two types of progressive decoding. Spatial scalability can be used to offer a lower resolution image for network constrained users and 'progressively' provide a higher resolution image by sending just the additional data required to fill in the high frequency details. Quality scalability offers a similar progression by steadily improving visual quality with each render.

That is totally not what I expected. Though it's not clear to me how exactly you achieve it.

cpburns2009··on The case against JPEG XL
Progressive rendering is just a different way to layout the pixel data. Embedding a thumbnail is storing two distinct images. In other words, progressive rendering should be more efficient space and bandwidth-wise.
cpburns2009··on Kenyans Did College Students' Homework for Years. Then A.I. Arrived
There was a Pakistani cheating ring at my wife's school. The administrators knew about it but did nothing.
cpburns2009··on Kenyans Did College Students' Homework for Years. Then A.I. Arrived
Oh doctors, as in med students, absolutely cheat. Don't think they're above that. There are cheating rings that administrators turn a blind eye to.
cpburns2009··on Flock worker calls police on investigator filming public camera installation
It's not that simple. When you're away from home, how do you know the exact jurisdiction to lookup? And if it's not a police related matter, what non-emergency phone would you even look up? Plenty of metro areas have a bunch of interlocking municipalities, or if you're out in a rural area it can be hard to know which township is the right one. Prior to finding out about 311 (which might not be right?), I'd have no idea.
cpburns2009··on Flock worker calls police on investigator filming public camera installation
How do you know what number to Google? Here's a real example. The day after a storm I noticed a tree leaning on a powerline. This was ~20 miles from where I live in a different county and township. If I hadn't already lived in that area before, I would have no clue who it call. 911 isn't appropriate because it's not an emergency... but that does need to get fixed.
