cowls··on A negative captcha
Unless you hide the field via Javascript. In which case the bot implementation would certainly become a lot more complex and I imagine this technique working well. (Though I haven't used it myself)
cowls··on Why can a scam company raise $40 Million Series C + $76 Million Series B?
I think trying to defend this scam was a really bad idea.
cowls··on Why can a scam company raise $40 Million Series C + $76 Million Series B?
Agreed, complete scam. From that image it looks like you are making a standard purchase for a pair of shoes, and possibly just signing up to their site. Its only if you read in detail everything on that page and get down to 3 in the bottom right that it finally says you will be charged a monthly fee.
cowls··on Move over Bootstrap and Foundation, welcome Semantic UI
Still annoying if I dont want to browse in the predefined order. Maybe I'm too easily wound up..
cowls··on Testing code is simple
Plus the article only shows the most basic kind of unit test possible. Yes, unit testing an 'add' function is easy
cowls··on Move over Bootstrap and Foundation, welcome Semantic UI
Do I seriously have to click that little menu button to expand the left hand menu every time I want to look at a new element?

I just want to click through and browse the different elements but its seriously laborious. Maybe I missed something but based on that I dont think Ill give this the time of day.

cowls··on In defense of Excel
Agreed, in my experience Excel is an excellent tool for beginners and advanced users. I don't think it has too much to worry about from "tableau"...
cowls··on Ask HN: I have $1200 to spend on gadgets, what should I buy?
Grammar police here.

The (all) is not needed, "what should I buy?" already covers the plural case. I have noticed this a lot in Indian English.

cowls··on Google knows nearly every Wi-Fi password in the world
Agreed, Google already have all our info anyway so not sure why they would send someone round to connect up to our Wireless networks..
cowls··on Google knows nearly every Wi-Fi password in the world
"On an HTC device, the option that gives Google your Wi-Fi password is "Back up my settings"

Evil Google, disguising the 'Can we steal your password button'

cowls··on World's first 'invisible' tower
Looks cool, lets just hope they don't allow planes and helicopters in Seoul
cowls··on Cocktails for programmers
I was hoping for coffee based :P
cowls··on Cocktails for programmers
Nice ideas, though I think java is sorely missed here,
cowls··on Do you need a degree to be a coder?
I would argue that a CS degree will make finding that first developer role a lot easier. You should also be more prepared for it. After 5+ years of experience it becomes a lot less relevant, and yes there are lots of people that have got a developer job without degrees but I think it takes a lot of dedication and sometimes a bit of luck.

Although as this article claims, £50000 is indeed hard to justify.

cowls··on [dead]
Don't forget her Skype too to try and sleaze on her friends.
cowls··on Quick Primer to Software Development
This is excellent, I have been helping various people with this technique for years.
cowls··on WWDC 2013 Keynote
Lets move off the NSA chat for 5 minutes?
cowls··on Income Distribution in London
Tip: You could move outside of London (30 minute commute to one of the major train stations) and half your rent/mortgage.
cowls··on They Acquire, Acquire, Acquire While We Build, Build, Build
"Zoho hires school students and give them the ludicrous jobs - Help desk ticket assignment, routine jobs like build management etc"

These jobs have to be done by someone.. I don't see why these jobs should be "below" school leavers. Hell, its a good place to start for them to gain some experience anyway.

cowls··on 10,000 Hours of Practice Won’t Make You an Expert
I think there is a difference between being an expert and being "successful" (In the context of that article success = lots of money).

I think the idea is that if I spend 10000 hours coding, I would most likely be an expert coder. It does not mean I will be rich like Bill Gates :(

cowls··on Lies on the London Underground [video]
I love that we dont read comments on HN, we parse them!
