costcofries··on Show HN: I built a modern Goodreads alternative
I would love a simple feature where I can get suggestions based on what's on my shelf. I'd even love to explore other shelves and see how people stack their books.
costcofries··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Why don't you?
costcofries··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
I've had a long urge to start mixing music, so I scratched that itch over the weekend and now I'm waist deep into a new obsession.
costcofries··on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announces new AI chips: ‘We need bigger GPUs’
Tell me more about why you believe their stock is hilariously overvalued.
costcofries··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
part of the problem is Airbnb though. We have 'investors' owning multiple properties and operating Airbnbs against local laws which does in fact decrease supply.
costcofries··on Sora: Creating video from text
I promise you this isn't true.
costcofries··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
Worse or not, a meaningful majority of users will never even understand the alternate workflow you just described.
costcofries··on Spotify CEO Daniel Ek blames his 1,500 job cuts on fake work and amateur execs
This is a really poor article and business insider is almost blinding to try to read but anyhow.. for the last few years we've been too accustomed to throwing money at problems, as opposed to thinking about the deeper rooted systematic causes and fixing those. This is now rapidly changing, right across the board, and it's fantastic.

Spotify at this stage of growth has a complex problem, they can either raise prices to squeeze more juice (something they are doing), or they can figure out new ways to attract more paying people, continuously while also curbing churn.

I'm not surprised that they are downsizing, cutting operating costs to maintain a sustainable business under the pressures they are facing is the first place I'd start too. Perhaps I'd take on some more accountability than Ek, yes that's for certain.

costcofries··on Meta's new AI image generator was trained on 1.1B Instagram and FB photos
This is why you don't also download the music from stories when you download stories, no such agreement with Spotify.
costcofries··on Who's Who Behind the Dawn of the Modern Artificial Intelligence Movement
Would just like to call out that there are 11 Men mentioned in this article and not a single Woman, really shameful work by NYT.
costcofries··on Semantic Kernel
Tell me more about how SK is the orchestration engine for Microsoft Copilots? Which ones specifically?
costcofries··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Good theory. Sam will come lead AI at MSFT.
costcofries··on The OpenAI Keynote
I think the play is around intelligent meeting devices. A single device that connects to your internal data and becomes the ultimate meeting sidekick.
costcofries··on The product manager role is a mistake
What a waste of time reading that was, just wow.
costcofries··on Show HN: I made an all-in-one desktop app with a no-BS approach to get work done
You need to simplify your value prop. What is the core problem that you're solving around a single user scenario. Get me hooked on that and then help me expand the value as I start using and understanding your product.

Right no it's too much to digest, it feels heavy and like I need to learn a whole new way of working. It is not clear to me what problem or massive pain point you are solving for me. Remember, you are asking me to spend time trying, learning and using a new tool, sell me on why I can't go on another day without doing that.

You've built a ton of value, more is not always better. Simplify and make it stupidly easy to understand.

Congrats and good luck.

costcofries··on Where does my computer get the time from?
They are creatures of habit
costcofries··on Duet AI for Google Workspace Now Available
Matches Microsoft pricing for Copilot, smart.
costcofries··on Following pushback, Zoom says it won't use customer data to train AI models
Teams will use your O365 enterprise data to power it's AI 'copilot' offering, it's literally what its customers are asking for.
costcofries··on Llama 2
Microsoft announced today that they will use Llama on Azure and Windows scenarios. Source: https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2023/07/18/microsoft-and-me...
costcofries··on Here’s How AI Will Come for Your Job
Actual title, "Here’s How AI Will Come for Your Job"
costcofries··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
This hurts junior employees the most. Tenured employees have equity as a large part of their comp, they are invested in the stock price, not the few % annual bump.
costcofries··on SpaceX, Rogers to connect mobiles phones to satellites in remote Canadian areas
Not sure this is an issue, I'm Canadian. This seems like Rogers customers will have access to reception via SpaceX satellites in remote areas, which is a good thing. If anything, this means a) Rogers has a slightly richer offering than the 2? other cell providers in Canada, b) Rogers is paying SpaceX for this OR Rogers is agreeing to play nice and in fact SpaceX is eating the bill.
costcofries··on Show HN: Personalized book recommendations with Librarian AI
It would be great if the AI knew what was on our respective bookshelves and then recommended new books based on that.
costcofries··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
I hope you have a better day.
costcofries··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
This will fundamentally change the way that M365 enables collaboration. I am truly fascinated by how quickly Microsoft is moving right now, it's really impressive. The moat on AI in enterprise continues to get bigger and bigger.
costcofries··on Ask HN: How do I get back into the tech industry after 4 years of unemployment?
What have you done for the last 4 years, surely something? I would simply summarize those activities, spend some time ramping up on any technical gaps you might have and start applying. You'll quickly learn through interviewing what areas you feel light on and can then iteratively start improving.

Get going, simple as that.

costcofries··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
I don't doubt this and I've seen some of it firsthand! I only meant to compare the larger cities of Canada and America and the observed differences. Each of our lands has their own distinct beauties.
costcofries··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
I'm not American but I really agree with this comment. Each time I do go to America, everything just feels very.. American. Lots of concrete, big vast spaces of industrial, roads that seem far too wide and just overall very, overwhelming and big.

Just my personal observations of course.

costcofries··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
There's nothing surprising about this. I work at FANGMA and I see this very very often.
costcofries··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
Happening at Microsoft too!
