cosmodisk··on AI 2027 (2025)
You are being downvoted but only a few years ago Google contemplated whether to kill GCP altogether because of lack of traction in the market or revenue goals.
cosmodisk··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
There are some exceptional executives out there with strong vision, ability to execute and build. Those are rare. The rest are just a bunch of people who had risen to the position because of whatever. They often don't have any special knowledge or skills and succeed mostly because of how the system works. For instance, I can't imagine what one would need to do to fuck up in a company like Coca-Cola. It's super well established, supply chains are golden, everything works, etc. So does success in such a company really mean the executive is some sort of visionary genius? Absolutely no.
cosmodisk··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
If a ceo can disappear for months and still return into a company that isn't on fire,it means they have a functional company. It means there are processes and people in right places to run things in a continuous manner. This isn't as common as people might think. I've seen many companies where people can't survive for a few days without ceo because the position is tied to a million things( often unnecessarily). There's an old saying about owning a business: if you leave and it still runs it means you have a business, otherwise it's just a job
cosmodisk··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
I had a few company events that could easily become the foundation for one of those films where the main characters wake up in the morning in some random Asian country. No matter how crazy people go in these parties, there's always someone watching it and taking mental notes. I stopped getting too drunk in these events since I got into more senior Nowadays my aim is usually to rescue my colleagues and get them home safely:)
cosmodisk··on Opus Cost = Minimum Wage in South Africa
In Lithuania it's €7.05/h.
cosmodisk··on AI has torched the market for junior programmers
I'm yet to meet anyone even remotely associated with tech ( let's call it all IT) that is good and only cares about money. Debugging code at for 8 hours straight is most people's hell on earth but some people love it and that love doesn't come through paycheck alone.
cosmodisk··on Doing a masters while working in Spain
I did study for my undergraduate degree( design & business) full time whilst also working full time. Graduated when I was almost 30. It took me 10 years until I wanted to study anything again.

Now I'm studying part time for my masters degree( cybersec) whilst also working full time, only this time the job is very mentally draining.

cosmodisk··on Phone-Free Events Grew 567% Globally in 2026, over 900% in US Alone
Over the last couple of years I went to a few events, such as ballet, classical music concert, theatre, etc. People have no manners at all when it comes to phones. They lift them all the way up, screens on full brightness and then just record for ages. Then multiply it by hundreds and it's just awful. If It was my choice, I'd ban all phones from all events
cosmodisk··on LinkedIn uses 2.4 GB RAM across two tabs
I've been using LinkedIn for years. I'm one of those cynics who loath all those "inspirational" and "leadership" posts, but there's more than that. I've met some people who tremendously boosted my career. I've met people who later became friends and our kids play together. I did meet a lot of incredible people in various jobs who I wouldn't have met otherwise(e.g. CEOs of very large companies- I'm just not in those circles to meet people in such positions). I'm often involved in interesting and challenging discussions on various technical and other topics.

The main point is that everyone can use it in a way they want to.It's perfectly fine to become some influencer if that's what one wants. It's equally fine to have 45 connections with people who are really good in what they do and perhaps exchange 5 messages a year. It's massive platform, so it's inevitable that there will be lots of crap out there,as in any other large forum without very strong moderation.

cosmodisk··on Ask HN: Developer laptop that doesn't suck in 2024 and it's not Apple silicone
Thinkpads, Dell XPS or Precision.
cosmodisk··on Ask HN: What were interviews like before Leetcode?
I do the same. The last hiring I did, I sent them a homework assignment that shouldn't take more than an hour. Then, we started talking about it. I asked to explain what and why was done. The started expanding into the sides areas of the solution. Then zoomed out and we discussed what would be the implications of doing x,y,z in a wider context of the system. The natural flow of the conversation does a couple of things: their social skills and how they approach unknown situations. I've hear plenty of 'I don't know' which was absolutely fine and much better than some fake confidence.
cosmodisk··on FDA approves first medication to reduce allergic reactions to multiple foods
I don't expect people to know every single item on the menu and all the ingredients they are made of. What I do expect is if a meal is made in a restaurant, the restaurant ( as a whole) to know whether it contains milk, soya, nuts, bananas, whatever. We have fairly strict regulations when it comes to this, but how they are actually applied is a completely different thing.
cosmodisk··on FDA approves first medication to reduce allergic reactions to multiple foods
Our daughter is allergic to a few things, nuts being one of them. When we ask for food information at restaurants, often staff have no clue. We had cases where they couldn't confirm for sure even after checking with the kitchen( we walked away).
cosmodisk··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
This is very true across all businesses layers. I remember some years ago implementing a CRM system for a small training company. The result was great and they successfully use it even today, however at the time we needed one the junior administrators in some of the discovery sessions so we better understand the processes they do,etc. She was absolutely petrified. Even though the system was meant to make her life much easier, instead she only saw it as her replacement. It took quite a bit of effort to convince her that she's staying. I had similar reactions in my team too when I announced that some processes could be completely automated. Instead of excitement,I received ' what will my job be like then?'.
cosmodisk··on A former Gizmodo writer changed name to 'Slackbot', stayed undetected for months
I've been playing this for a while now with our daughter. She wakes up in the morning and finds some absurdity written on my account, then she changes it and the cycle repeats on the following day:)
cosmodisk··on Writer 'swatted' 47 times over casual diss of Norm Macdonald in 2018
What's incredible is that nobody is yet in jail for all those swattings
cosmodisk··on Falls are a leading cause of bone breaks, brain injuries for U.S. seniors
I'm fairly young and I have balance issues. If I won't address them in near future, the retirement period will look very very bleak for me.
cosmodisk··on Magic AI Secures $117M to Build an AI Software Engineer
I started using it recently. $30, 50, or even $100 a month is litterly nothing for most companies in wester world. They'll hike up the prices eventually.
cosmodisk··on Magic AI Secures $117M to Build an AI Software Engineer
Even without any AI, every senior I know( 10+ years of experience) is pretty much trying to shift to architect or similar position and sees day to day programming almost on the same level as sweeping floors. I appreciate this may not be the case in shops doing something truly unique, but in an average CRED app world, this will happen much sooner than a lot of people might think.
cosmodisk··on Fixing Horizon bugs would have been too costly, Post Office inquiry told
I'm currently working on a 'simple' integration between an accounting and crm software. I'm already pulling my hair because of various exceptions, limitations and whatnot. I think Horizon was anything but simple.
cosmodisk··on Ask HN: 40yo adult learning to drive what is different vs. learning young?
I'm almost 39 and I did pass my driving test last year for the first time in my life.

Not sure how things work in the US, but where I am, we get a standard package of 30 driving hours before we can do the exam. For me that wasn't enough,so I had to take additional hours, which did help a lot and removed knowledge gaps. In a nutshell, the older one is,the more hours will be needed. https://learndriving.tips/starting-out/how-many-driving-less...

My advice is to get a bigger number of hours so the instructor would have enough time to teach properly. Also I did on a manual, which is way less popular in the US, however it does help a lot understanding how the car behaves, etc.

cosmodisk··on Dell XPS laptop gets a 2024 overhaul with XPS 13, XPS 14, and XPS 16 laptops
I was given an XPS 13 cat work a few years ago. The machine was solid: I even managed to drop it twice on a pavement and spill it with soup and some tomato juice. It still worked. However, over a 4 year period I changed 3 batteries. The last one swelled so much that it made the keyboard bulge. I now have a Dell Precision, which is amazing and hopefully the battery will hold a bit better.
cosmodisk··on Toyota to sell 900% more hydrogen cars than solid-state EVs
It's probably same here in Europe. My local Lexus lists the hydrogen version, which is nice and all that but where the hell would I suppose to get hydrogen for it?..
cosmodisk··on Return to office is 'dead,' Stanford economist says
Don't hire people who can't put two coherent sentences together in an email. I've seen many many of such types. They are tragedy in remote environments.
cosmodisk··on OpenAI was working on advanced model so powerful it alarmed staff
It can't,as it relies on external plugins to make it work.
cosmodisk··on Ask HN: What % of your salary are bonuses?
I get up to 10% of my salary as a bonus. It's linked to a handful of KPIs.
cosmodisk··on Ask HN: How do you describe what you do at parties?
I usually tell people I add and remove buttons on the screen. People look at me like I'm a idiot and change the subject.
cosmodisk··on Ask HN: How Important Is Networking?
In my opinion networking events isn't really the place to go if you want to network. Networking happens naturally, not by going to one place and trying to meet lots of people. Instead, go to relevant community events, trade shows. Linkedin is a good place to meet new people, but not by sending silly messages asking to expand your network. Talk to people,be useful, or ask help, meet them, etc. For instance, if you work as a dev in city x, message a few devs, strike an easy convo which doesn't turn into a sales pitch or desperate call for help. Offer to meet, talk about work, etc. People are very very willing to meet.
cosmodisk··on All of the vehicle license plates available in America
I suppose it still looks a little bit like this then: https://youtu.be/2xcQIoh3FQQ
cosmodisk··on All of the vehicle license plates available in America
In Lithuania the rules are fairly simple: fines up to a certain level of intoxication.Criminal record, car seizure, massive fine and lost licence if it goes above certain limit. Also, one needs to take a driving test at the end( after 2 or 3 years) if they want to drive again and the examiners are known to apply every rule in the book so they'd have hard time to pass.
