cosmiccartel··on It’s time to give Firefox another chance
I was a Firefox user since it was called Phoenix, and finally switched to Chrome in mid 2015. With the latest release, I finally feel comfortable enough to switch back. FF is a true competitor in the browser space again.

I'd mainly chalk that up to them being the only ones open to a genuine discussion with him. The articles coming out in the aftermath were all extremely demonizing of Damore.

I remember watching Peterson's interview with him, and Damore didn't really seem comfortable with many of the former's statements, just based on his body language. Maybe that was just social awkwardness.

Also, I don't follow Molyneux or Carlson, but neither Peterson nor Shapiro can be truthfully called extreme.

cosmiccartel··on The Sorrow and the Shame of the Accidental Killer
Theodore Kaczynski (AKA the Unabomber) wrote about this quite a bit. To him, the most insidious aspect of technology is one's inability to opt out.

Even if an individual draws a line in the sand and decides they don't want a [dishwasher|car|computer|smartphone|robotic servant], they've only held back the tide for a single generation. It's only a matter of time before their descendants give in. The pull only increases with time.

I have my doubts as to whether more concerted efforts, such as those of the Amish, are really effective either.

cosmiccartel··on Gab's domain registrar gives 5 days to transfer domain or they will seize it
Equating speech with terrorism builds fear in me. According to your logic, your own comment is terrorism. Unless you really want to split hairs.
cosmiccartel··on Gab's domain registrar gives 5 days to transfer domain or they will seize it
We're not talking about terrorist material. We're talking about speech. Holding and voicing controversial ideas is not terrorism.
cosmiccartel··on Effective immediately I am stepping down from the Nodejs TSC
It looks like the responsibilities of the TSC involve much more than enforcing a code of conduct. If you want a simile for this situation, I'd say it's more like a police officer sharing an article that's in favor of marijuana legalization, and being upset when his coworkers attack him over it.
cosmiccartel··on Ask HN: Self-taught developers, what repo helped land your first job?
I applied for an internship at a local-ish company (I'm from a very rural area, so local means within 100 miles). They did check out my GitHub, and all I had on it was my blog (Rails app I had made when first learning). One of the interviewers checked out my blog, which had only posts about really basic topics on it, and I was worried I'd be outed as an idiot. He said "Oh, you're keeping a blog. That's really cool." I got the job on the spot. That was a little over two years ago.

From your own link: "On January 16, 2017, Project Veritas uploaded a video showing DC Antifascist Coalition members of Disrupt J20 plotting to use 'stink bombs' at the DeploraBall. After the video's release, Disrupt J20 denied the statements, saying that the members deliberately gave false information to Veritas.[107] The video led to the arrest of one man allegedly involved in the plan,[108] as well as two associates. All three individuals pleaded guilty.[109]"

DisruptJ20 was exposed by Project Veritas for (allegedly) organizing illegal terrorist activities. Presumably, that would be the reason for this, rather than their organization of legal protests.
