corobo··on Show HN: I am Building a Producthunt alternative
Do you not have sentence structures along the line of "I wanted the premium model but it was out of my budget so I went for the next best thing"?

I get we're trying to go for "next [best thing]" but yeah I (also UK) read it as "[next best] thing" and can't think of any examples where I'd read it as the former

I'd love a tech write up from the YouTube folks starting from when someone was wondering "Why is all this data waking up from the lukewarm storage layer today lmao" opens HN "ah ok"

Isn't that what labellers do?

Eg this shows if a post has differing create/index dates

corobo··on Ask HN: What ist your AdBlock strategy?
Likely referencing Firefox's enhanced tracking protection.

You can control it with the lil purple shield icon to the left of the address bar (not that you're obliged to disable it for some website just because they asked, of course!)

corobo··on Ask HN: What ist your AdBlock strategy?
As a possible counter to

> but if you’re looking for iOS/iPadOS/macOS/tvOS, note that NextDNS does not work well on these

If your situation supports it I've had zero issues (since May 2021) using NextDNS via tailscale[1] on all of the above devices[2].

I do realise it's not feasible to ask people to set up a VPN just for some adblocking but it's a decent option if you were going to do it anyway :)

[2]: Yes even tvOS: https://tailscale.com/kb/1280/appletv

corobo··on Ask HN: What ist your AdBlock strategy?
Firefox and uBlock Origin at the browser level on desktop/laptop. For trackers specifically Firefox also has its built in tracking protection.

NextDNS at the network level for all of my devices that support tailscale[1] wherever they may be in the world.

NextDNS for any other home devices via my router's DNS settings.

corobo··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
Yes but cuts deals, which is what the title says, is ambiguous.

Those are some load bearing pluralisations right there.

corobo··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Maybe what he really wanted was a super duper whipped cream topped pumpkin spiced coffee and sprinkles but thought he'd save you guys the hassle and just order something that can be poured out of a jug

Poor misunderstood Ballmer :(

corobo··on Disposable vapes to be banned in England and Wales
The people I know that would be affected by this just get duty free from corner shops under the table now. Last I heard it's around 8 quid for 50g of rolling tobacco instead of £38 buying legit.

Wouldn't be surprised to find out they smoke more than they used to with it being less scarce.

corobo··on Claude Computer Use – Is Vision the Ultimate API?
Sweet! I'll have my own Holly from Red Dwarf!

or maybe my own HAL9000..

A little bit ambivalent on this haha, looking forward to seeing what comes of it either way though :)

corobo··on Is Matt Mullenweg defending WordPress or sabotaging it?
> He is the only person I have ever seen interacting in such a petty manner that he made a company backed by Private Equity look like a victim

Right. At the very start of this I was automatically on wordPress' side because yeah, kick back if you make a mint off free code. It's the morally correct thing to do.

The rest is just.. wtf. I hope I never mullenweg a project this badly.

corobo··on Apple introduces iPad mini built for Apple Intelligence
I'm always managing to tap the top of the phone resulting in either

- opening some app that recently used location services

Or worse

- making whatever app I'm in jump to the top of its page with no way to get back to where I was short of doing a load of scrolling

corobo··on Secure Custom Fields by WordPress.org
Him being in the middle of a mad coke bender would explain so much. I'm accepting this as canon until we find out WP Engine slept with his wife or something
corobo··on The other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the US
"Twat" is another one that sounds weird. Americans sound like they're replacing the a with an o
corobo··on Why does man print "gimme gimme gimme" at 00:30? (2017)
I use xyzzy

- Nothing happens

- Easy to find string in code, output, wherever

corobo··on Some Automattic employees accept severance package offer

What features are you looking for? What features are you avoiding?

corobo··on UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius

corobo··on What excessive screen time does to the adult brain
Maybe if you attached googley eyes to your phone so your brain recognises it as a being? Worst thing my phone is gonna do in the morning is fall on my face and make me do a weird pouty lip airbag sort of move

Having said that I was washing my face this morning and in a moment of fight or flight I did rip the washcloth to shreds with my teeth

corobo··on Mullenweg threatens corporate takeover of WP Engine
I wish he'd just do whatever he's going to do already. Dudes just coming off as having a bit of a manic one at this point.

Two things that are true:

- Big businesses built off the back of an open source software should absolutely chuck a bit back to said software

- Matt is messing with peoples' bread and butter to win his little slap fight which is a complete dickhead move.

corobo··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Oh absolutely. Early on into the AI craze I tried to use it to summarise my messages[1] and it made them overly fluffy and weird.

Anyone receiving the message would instantly clock that I didn't write it - even with a prompt longer than the original message trying to massage out all of the Americanisms and false enthusiasm. Not a use case that works for me, haha.

[1]: I was trying to use it to shorten my "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter" waffling.

corobo··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Must have been prompted to be an American podcaster.

Bring on the one that's all British and snarky!

corobo··on OpenAI rolls out Advanced Voice Mode with more voices and a new look
I think the uncanny valley feeling is going to be there no matter what they come up with. I, and therefore my brain, knows the voice is coming from a soulless machine[1] so it'll always feel a little off.

My perfect voice assistant would sound like Auto from Wall-E, which is supposedly a blend of MacOS' Ralph and Zarvox voices. Along the lines of (bear in mind I just wrote this directly into the terminal and didn't spend any time actually blending them lol)

  say -v ralph -r 180 "I'm sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that" & ; say -v zarvox -r 180 "I'm sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that"
And yeah I'm almost convinced that the whole voice interaction thing came about because they interact with the computer in Star Trek using voice commands.. which is probably just because watching someone type everything into a keyboard would be some boring telly.

I assume there are folks that do use it and do like it, but do they like it more than just pressing buttons to do things? No worries of being misinterpreted or having to speak like a robot at Alexa because it's failed to turn the lights off 3 voice commands in a row now. It's awesome for accessibility, don't get me wrong, I'm talking in the sense of the primary and most commonly used interface.

[1] Not a criticism, fellow soulless machines.

corobo··on Coffee Stats – Maximize Caffeine Intake and Get to Bed at Night
Yup, I could easily finish a meal out or whatever with coffee or two with no worries on how it'll affect my sleep (if anything the stimulation brought my dopamine up enough to sleep)

First day I was put on (low dose) stimulant meds I slept for 16 hours haha

corobo··on How the iPhone 16's electrically-released adhesive works
Huh. I had no idea cranes are allowed to freely rotate with the wind. Makes sense, just one of those things I'd never thought about.

Neat!

corobo··on Coffee Stats – Maximize Caffeine Intake and Get to Bed at Night
idk what other quirks you've got but this one turned out to be an adhd symptom for me lol

Coffee actually works on me now I'm on stimulant medication haha

corobo··on OpenAI Threatening to Ban Users for Asking Strawberry About Its Reasoning
This is a direct path towards the "Humans were the AGI all along" ending.

Kinda a twist on the normal AI alignment concern - what if instead of merely being misaligned with us, AI decides to realign us to it?

Or, in other words.. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

corobo··on Automating My /Now Page
A link at the end of the post where you link to the source code would do it - that's where I was when I was tilted into action to check it out anyway

On topic: intriguing idea. I may have to have a look at something like this next time I'm procrastinating doing something else haha

Bonus points for linking to all of your research and discovery, that's super helpful - nice one :)
