corny··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
I admit to not listening to radio anymore but I was surprised to hear that there are still some music stations with local DJ's in Vancouver.

This article also claims that radio is slowly gaining listeners.

This weekend and next week they will be playing David Bowie's 'Live At Montreux' at Lobe in Vancouver. Lobe is a unique room with the speakers installed in the floor and ceiling. https://lobestudio.ca/new-events/david-bowie-live-at-montreu...

Check if your local library has a PressReader subscription. It doesn't help open links to paywalled articles, but depending on your library, you may already have access to a lot of newspapers and magazines.
corny··on Show HN: Jukebox – Free, Open Source Group Playlist with Fair Queueing
This is great. One little thing, after the last song in the playlist is over, it would be nice if the state remained in play mode so that when another song is added to the queue the new song would play right away.

Also, I've been wanting something just like this but that would also play the video as well as audio.

corny··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
Yes, I use a 30 second rule as well! If something extra might happen within the frame, waiting it out often pays off.
corny··on What if we made advertising illegal?
And we could make those catalogs more appealing to the general public by inserting a lot of exclusive content like news, essays, or short stories.

I basically agree with the spirit of what you're saying but the line is not clear.

corny··on Trust in Firefox and Mozilla Is Gone – Let's Talk Alternatives
There's no mention yet of Kagi's Orion browser. What are people's thoughts on that?

Company 4 is a reasonable answer. What's the point in having a scoring system if you're going to use personal judgement to determine the winner? Of course company 4 would be a bad fit. But the problem is the method that was originally chosen to evaluate the companies. The key is "according to the evaluation detailed in the chart". In reality, the company should look at these results and realize that they need a new evaluation method.
corny··on Shoelace: A library of web components
Yes, this technique sounds really good. Thanks for this.
corny··on Shoelace: A library of web components
No, I believe it is the nature of web components that they can't be server rendered. I'm not talking about framework components like react, vue, etc.
corny··on Shoelace: A library of web components
I'm not happy with any of the solutions to prevent a flash of undefined components. Has anyone given up on web components for that reason? Or is there a best practice for this?
corny··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
But "color" doesn't apply to just text. Changing the color of an element affects the currentColor and applies to default border colors. The property name "color" makes more sense than "text-color" imho.

Both groceries and gas are sold at low profit margins - I've heard as low as 1-2% for groceries. They are commodities, there's a lot of competition, and shoppers are very price conscious. If grocery stores can make a profit selling food cheaper they will. If grocery stores can pay less rent for their stores, pay less wages for their staff, pay less for all their expenses, those savings will get passed down to consumers as cheaper food.

corny··on “Logistics”, an 857-hour movie, tracks a pedometer from shop back to factory
The Polygon Gallery (North Vancouver, BC) hosted The Clock a few years ago. But staying open for a 24 hour long film must be much easier than for a month long film.
corny··on Teclis – Non-commercial web search
Really like the design of this. Best search results layout I've seen since the old days of google.
corny··on Show HN: iPod Clickwheel.js
If you click and drag any of the icons on the wheel it won't work. Click and drag the whitespace within the wheel and it works.
corny··on Smartphones Are a New Tax on the Poor
Gmail is soon turning on two-step verification for all accounts. The very poor - the people who use library computers to check their email - often do not have phones at all. I truly don't know what they're going to do when all online services require MFA.
corny··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
"Quantitative" doesn't mean "empirical". I read the question to mean has google search returned _fewer_ results. Not fewer good results, but fewer results full stop. Perhaps the asker made a typo and meant "qualitatively".
corny··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
Yes, I specifically asked the optometrist for this. I measured the distance to my computer screen and they were able to give me a custom prescription. My near-sightedness is not even that bad. But switching from my regular glasses to my computer glasses feels refreshing. Do it!
corny··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
Prescription glasses optimized for the distance to my computer screen. I was getting eye strain after even a short time in front of the computer. The new glasses completely solved the eye strain. I highly recommend it for anyone who is near sighted and uses a computer.

corny··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
I wrote a command line journal called 'did' that shows me what I did on this day over the last five years (like a 5 year diary). I enter a ton of items every day which all end up in text files. Only items including an asterisk will be repeated back to me in future years.

corny··on I forgot about print style sheets (2016)
People who do not have internet or a computer at home very often print pages from the internet at their local library.
corny··on European court of human rights rules obligatory vaccination may be necessary
Just an added perspective from Canada. Right now the covid variants are causing more and more of the new cases and, in BC, the average age of someone testing positive for the variant is 30. To make matters worse, the variants could be more deadly. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/coronavirus-variants-canada-c...

Our vaccination progress is frustratingly slow and only the most elderly population (80+) have had their first shot in significant numbers. Even if you are only thinking about yourself, you should not be dismissing the risk from these new variants.

If the pandemic continues and voluntary uptake is not high enough, you better believe that vaccines will become mandatory. Being responsible sometimes means doing what we don't want to do.
