Do you realize that what I said is completely valid and true?

Managers: Do not discuss your ex-employee’s work in public. It’s risking their reputation and unprofessional.

> It's not unethical to talk about anyone publicly.

If you’re a manager, it most certainly is unethical to talk about someone you’ve managed publicly. I’m hardly the first person to say this. There’s tons of information out there coaching managers on how to talk about ex-employees. Maybe it doesn’t bother you, but I assure you a lot of people care about this and don’t want their ex-boss chiming in on their new projects.

It’s not whether you or I get value out of it. It’s unethical to talk about people you’ve managed publicly. Most managers won’t even get into details in a private reference check for liability and ethical reasons.

He doesn’t need to critique the market. He’s also wrong. MS is doing fine with dev tools (VS Code, GitHub…). Maybe this attitude is why Google has fallen so far behind in dev mindshare?

Who would you say is capturing the value created by this software, and how can we fix it so that value goes to the people who wrote the software?

Not sure I have an answer but that shareholders and executives get the vast majority of the gains points to an extremely broken system.

> His original thesis on Bitcoin as expressed in his NYT article "Why Bitcoin Matters" [1], is still very compelling

This looks like a bog standard description of how Bitcoin works, written 5 years after the Bitcoin white paper. There’s nothing insightful there.

cornercasechase··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
Very often, yes. But if their boss harassed them (or say tried to force RTO), they could quit and not worry about ending up on the street.
cornercasechase··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
If the work is not getting done, spying on people isn’t going to improve things. If you want people to work, you have to properly motivate them. That means fair wages and non-toxic management.

> Perhaps we could make paying for such people voluntary?

I’d like to opt out of paying for war but sadly I can’t. My tax dollars going to help people instead of kill and oppress them seems like a huge upgrade.

cornercasechase··on Twitter fails to act on 99% of Twitter Blue accounts tweeting hate
Elon Musk has been censoring things left and right, with and without excuse. This isn’t about some sneaky way to censor Twitter. Twitter is already censored, just not hate speech.
cornercasechase··on Twitter fails to act on 99% of Twitter Blue accounts tweeting hate
I quoted them twice because two (now three) people in this thread said the tweets weren’t that bad, so people should see for themselves exactly what these users are endorsing.

“Altruistic purposes”, what would those be? I’ve only seen him censor his opponents, spew bog standard far-right talking points and make poor product decisions. How is that “altruistic”?

Which of these is “subtle”? From the article:

“The black culture has done more damage [than] the klan ever did” “The Jewish Mafia wants to replace us all with brown people” “Trannies are pedophiles” “Diversity is a codeword for White Genocide” “Hitler was right”, accompanied by a montage of the former dictator Black people belong “locked in cages at the zoo” LGBTQ+ rights activists need “IRON IN THEIR DIET. Preferably from a #AFiringSquad”

It’s kind of crazy how groupthink all of the blue checkmarks are, it’s like they’re all the same right-wing bot. Hundreds of them complaining day in and day out about trans people and CRT. Each coming to Elon’s defense after every stupid move he makes, saying Musk is for “free speech” every time he censors something. I wonder how many are actually just his sock puppets?
cornercasechase··on Layoffs push down scores on Glassdoor – how companies respond
If I want to know if a company is toxic, Blind is a lot more useful than Glassdoor. People will speak the truth while they’re at the company.

It’s been a lot longer than 10 years. The empty, massive, underground bus/train “depot” that sits under the downtown has multiple track gauges running through it from all the failed projects.

Really? Because Blind seems like a much better Glassdoor if your goal is to understand what it’s actually like inside a company.

> CEO of Microsoft is a child of middle class Indian immigrants

Middle class people aren’t the secretary to the prime minister.

https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/satya-nadela-microsoft...

> so is CEO of Google

“His father also had a manufacturing plant that produced electrical components”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundar_Pichai

You’re buying the propaganda.

cornercasechase··on A mental health crisis in science
I realize that the CEO was born into a family where they were handed their position. You don’t get to the top by “working hard” that’s a sucker’s game. You need to be born to the right family, grease the right palms and be in the right place at the right time. Being a complete sociopath doesn’t hurt either.

> To your point, the issues plaguing the US ( and indeed the world ) have not changed that much over the past four decades.

Wealth inequality has an increased a lot in the last four decades. I’d start there when looking for a source for mental health issues.

I think being angry is a natural and healthy response to the current economic reality. The juniors you’re working with have it right. If the CEO is going to make 100X as much as me, I’m going to do my best to work 100X less than they do. Hopefully we’ve reached a timeline where we no longer acquiesce to rampant inequality.
