corndoge··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Here in the US, "Flock bad" has entered the Algorithm which dictates what people see and care about. People otherwise uninvolved in technology, whose eyes would glaze over in a conversation about mass surveillance, they will light up if you say Flock. It's just in the zeitgeist. My comment was more meta commentary about how recommender algorithms and not people's personal thoughts / opinions are deciding which causes get attention.
corndoge··on What happened to the Snowden archive
The funny thing is that now we have people freaking out about Flock. These same people didn't care about Snowden files at the time. In the same vein there are many ALPR companies besides Flock but none of them are getting any heat.

Too much is happening for anyone to keep up with it all.

corndoge··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
Thanks for answering. Do you think these dovetail? Both archive everything you browse, so that's common functionality that could be factored out. I only want one archive, having two separate archives because one focuses on search and the other on long term archival is inefficient. What do you do for long term archival - or do you not have this use case?
corndoge··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
Are you aware of ArchiveBox?

https://archivebox.io/

What does Hister do differently? Search seems like a major differentiator, I'm wondering if leveraging the existing archivebox project for archival and implementing good search on top would be more efficient

Very strong reasoning here. Is there anything this ADHD condition cannot explain?

corndoge··on My Friend Aaron
I like it because each individual piece can happen and we probably all know people by now that have some aspect of Aaron - massive AI use, or into prediction markets, or live streaming, or just a friend who we have learned over time lacks scruples, or have watched them fade in response to life's challenges. The combination of all of these is then easy to imagine and that idea makes a good story.

Correct, for better or worse facebook is the meeting ground for many communities and if you are in those communities you have to use it.

I mean, people did try to discuss it. YouTube and Facebook actually deleted content discussing it, in possibly the most blatant act of political censorship in recent memory in this country, and barely anyone knows that.

Not that the US government has any credibility left after current admin, but the statements in here are factual, they really did take down youtube videos that were speculating about lab leak. I saw it happen.

corndoge··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
Yeah they're really trying to solve problems that should be solved at a technical level with soft solutions in porcelain. See also this issue asking keepassxc to disable plaintext exports, which is completely technically feasible

corndoge··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
The fact that services can ban passkey providers is a major red flag in the protocol and the real issue that nobody talks about

well, people are talking about it but it's not making a difference https://lucumr.pocoo.org/2025/9/2/passkeys/

corndoge··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
this doesn't really matter. There's no risk of models gaining sentience and running themselves, this blog is like openai saying whoops we ran sqlmap and dumped hf. cool, but someone still needs to point the gun

You are thinking of "game theory" and it's what happens when your coworkers don't give a shit. And all it takes is one, both because they can degrade product quality faster than you can gate it or fix it and because the performance assessment techniques are about 3 years behind the state of LLMs and if they play, you have to also or you'll get shit on from such a height you won't even know what hit you.

And once you start playing the game, then one day - it doesn't take long - you wake up and ask yourself if this is how you want to spend 8 hours of your life monday through friday. I think a lot of us are saying no but now need to figure out where our money is going to come from. I don't have the answers.
