cooperadymas··on Slack’s biggest redesign ever tries to tame the chaos of your workday
> There is a reason why we have multiple communication medium.

> Public articles - Pull requests - Issue trackers - Internal Wiki - Emails - Chat - Phone calls - Visio - Face to face

I believe this to be absolutely true.

Yet at the same time, it creates its own set of problems.

If I could only tally up the lost hours I've spent trying to track down whether a comment was made on the wiki, or in chat, or via email, or in the PR.

Even using Github alone has this problem. Does something exist as an issue, a discussion, a wiki, in the code itself, a comment on the PR? What's the right place for something to go? These aren't trivial questions, especially for large orgs.

To a certain degree this is an indexing problem as much as it is a problem with the communication medium, but if you bring together all of your communication into a central hub you solve this issue plus many others.

You just annoy a small, yet outspoken subset of people while doing it.

> So we have hours longs Slack discussions that spare us minutes of reading a wiki page or discussing on a phone call.

I think Slack sees these problems and attempts to address them, even if it isn't perfect. See Huddles for example.

Disclaimer: I hate using Slack too and personally wish it wasn't a part of my day to day.

cooperadymas··on Navy in Middle-Earth
That's fascinating and I'll have to read it.

The thing that stood out to me in my most recent reread of LOTR is the complete and utter lack of farms. Outside of Farmer Maggot in the shire, the main characters almost never encounter random, normal people living outside of the main city centers. It feels like an empty world waiting to be explored, not one that has been heavily populated for thousands of years.

cooperadymas··on New York State Senate passes prohibitions on non-competes
This is what highly paid white collar workers on Hacker News like to parrot but it's sensationalist at best. Even in this article where the evidence points to low wage workers having the lowest percentage of NCA's runs with the click bait headline.

https://www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2021/non-compete-cont...

Regardless, no Subway worker ever GAF about a NCA. They walked right across the street to Jimmy John's and were hired on the spot. And even if Subway had a NCA in place - which I doubt most of the major chains do - Subway doesn't GAF either. The only time anyone would care is maybe if a manager opened another deli across the street and took all the info from their suppliers with them.

85-88 is unrivaled. I am willing to fudge the 3 year span a bit because games were still released at significantly times in different countries, though you could sheer off either end and still have an extremely impressive list.

  Super Mario Bros 3
  Zelda II
  Mega Man
  John Madden Football
  Battle Chess
  Tetris
  Contra
  Double Dragon
  Street Fighter
  Castlevania
  Metal Gear
  Metroid
  Mike Tyson's Punch Out
  Final Fantasy
  The Legend of Zelda
  Dragon Quest
  Super Mario Bros
  Adventure Island
  Paper Boy
  Gauntlet

cooperadymas··on Creator of Catan, Klaus Teuber, has died
You're probably looking at the 8-10 year old range to truly understand the rules and begin to pick up strategy enough to play on their own. There is not much that is truly _secret_ in Catan, so it's an easy one where Dad/Mom can help guide the decision making. You could also very easily simplify the game - take out resource cards, take out bonuses for longest road / largest army, and reduce the winning VP to 5, then it's only about building settlements/cities and roads, and friendly trading.

There is even a junior version that says it is for ages 6+. I admittedly have never played it but have heard that it can work for some smart 4 year olds with a little guidance.

cooperadymas··on Creator of Catan, Klaus Teuber, has died
I'm what most would probably consider a hardcore gamer or a "board game hipster", sitting here with 70 or so board games on my shelf. (IMO I'm not really that hardcore or hipstery about it for many reasons. It's all relative in the end.)

I like long complex games that make Catan look like Go Fish.

I have played regularly with a group of friends for years now both in person and online. They're slightly less hardcore.

Catan is one of the games we constantly have running turn based. It never gets old.

It's the perfect balance of strategy, luck, complexity, and fun.

cooperadymas··on New React docs pretend SPAs don't exist anymore
Er, lots apparently. Just now I was searching through posts on a Facebook event to find more details. I thought I finally found what I was looking for buried a few months deep and clicked it. It was the wrong item so I clicked back and Facebook scrolled me to the top of the event page again.

This is a common occurrence for me on Facebook on both mobile and desktop. It happens sometimes in Gmail too. I'm certain I could find a half dozen other examples given five minutes to go test.

Meanwhile HN happily preserves scroll position perfectly.

cooperadymas··on New React docs pretend SPAs don't exist anymore
Since when have SPAs figured out maintaining scroll position? That's not my experience at all.
cooperadymas··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
Yes, it is not something they hide. This has been discussed every time Kagi comes up, so I'd say it's fairly well known, at least in places where Kagi is known.

It is documented plainly in their help text and archive.org has indexed that page as far back as October.

cooperadymas··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
Agreed on both accounts. As someone who is not even a heavy user - I have over $50 in "surplus" right now, meaning they're making money off of me - I am likely to cancel for both of these exact reasons despite the fact that the actual charge to my credit card would not change next month (and I could even cut my cost in half if I wanted to).
cooperadymas··on Atlassian to shed 5 per cent of workers
I can't tell where you're driving with the JetBrains comparison. Truthfully, I'm a little surprised they only have 2000 employees.

They have a suite of IDEs supporting a multitude of languages, that are almost universally considered best in class. IDEs are not an easy thing to build. They developed and maintain the Kotlin language which has all but become the standard for Android dev. And they have integrated team collaboration tools that range from project management to CI to cloud dev environments.

cooperadymas··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back

cooperadymas··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
I think what everyone is missing is the timing of these RTO orders.

There's a huge swath of tech playoffs right now. Tens or hundreds of thousands of devs are out of work and looking. Many, many others are worried they are next on the chopping block.

There's no better time for big corps to make unpopular decisions like this.

Many employees will be scared to refuse the mandate, because they see the layoffs. They fear for their job. They see the market is tough for getting hired elsewhere. They'll go back to the office out of fear.

If devs leave, it will be easier than ever to replace them.

cooperadymas··on Now offering 2TB SSDs for Steam Deck in the Framework Marketplace
> If business 101 is marketing to fanboys then I guess you're right.

Basically, yes?

cooperadymas··on Now offering 2TB SSDs for Steam Deck in the Framework Marketplace
It answers right there in sentence 3 _why buy from Framework_.

> the handheld Steam Deck relies on the physically smaller but less common 2230 format. As a result, it can be difficult to find legitimate sources for larger capacity drives ... Since we order a huge number of Western Digital drives already, it’s relatively easy for us to add one more line item

> Sounds like they're just trying to cash in on a new market.

So, business 101? What's the problem? They're offering a legitimate product for a legitimate market trying to solve a legitimate problem they identified.

cooperadymas··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
It's a little sickening to take your train of thought to its destination, which is that all of the developers being laid off right now are "bad developers" and will put other companies in a "worse position" if hired.

Should someone laid off as a developer simply accept they can't cut it, leave the industry, and find a job as a barista where at least they can earn some tips?

You make a lot of assumptions about what devs are being laid off in the first place. And about the absolute quality of a developer.

One company's garbage developer is another company's 10x.

cooperadymas··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
That's what everyone keeps telling you until you're locked into 30+ services equaling an additional 20% of each employee's salary, plus the time to educate on and maintain those services.

And then they don't even communicate with one another.

cooperadymas··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
Maybe those "better developers" were suddenly laid off by even bigger corps? I've noticed a trickle down effect in our very-small hiring queue. I can't help but imagine mid-sized companies are getting access to devs that only wanted to work for FAANG before.
