cool_man_bob··on An investigation into Substrate
> The founder is known con-artist involved in such other things as solving nuclear fusion and stealing $2.5M in a Kickstarter scam.

Haha, am I still supposed to believe VC’s are competent, intelligent people who deserve their stature when they fall for scams that should be more obvious than a Nigerian prince scam.

cool_man_bob··on Falling panel prices lead to global solar boom, except for the US
For now, those alliances are always tentative through.
cool_man_bob··on Falling panel prices lead to global solar boom, except for the US
Meh, I feel we’re entering an era where only the elite will be able to realistically check authoritarians, and they will just be lesser

Think more of the earlier end of medieval era, where the peasant class was mostly incapable against feudal armies, even in many cases with massive numbers on their side.

There’s an entire surveillance state, eyes everywhere, gait recognition, massive intelligence networks all at a scale unimaginable by kings and dictators of the past.

cool_man_bob··on Falling panel prices lead to global solar boom, except for the US
Easy. (b)

I can continue to milk a specific market while my competitors do other things.

Yeah eventually that will be dried up, but by than point enough wealth has been accumulated for generations of me and my family.

Plus if the worst comes too quickly there’s a fair chance I’ll get bailed out by my long time buddies in the government.

cool_man_bob··on Chipotle stock craters: young people without jobs cannot afford their food
The food seems to have become worse and worse too.

I’m pretty sure the last several times I’ve eaten chipotle, across several states, I’ve been given hard rice and cold meat. I don’t remember it being that common a decade ago.

cool_man_bob··on Trump directs nuclear weapons testing to resume for first time in over 30 years
> The statement lacked any detail. It's just attention whoring

Everything is now. That’s what you get when you build a mind rape device that explicitly rewards attention whoring an other antisocial behavior.

cool_man_bob··on ICE and CBP agents are scanning faces on the street to verify citizenship
Libertarians and 90s republican are about as politically impotent as the democrats these days.

The Hannity and Infowars fans will be written off as crazy when no longer useful.

cool_man_bob··on [dead]
Call them sycophants, but they know the road to power. Frightening.
cool_man_bob··on Life After Work
> In our lifetimes, we may see fully realistic virtual reality, abundant fusion power, cognitive enhancement through brain augmentation, mind uploading, relativistic space travel, unlimited personalized entertainment, full control over our genomes, ultra-luxurious hypersonic air travel, and extremely pleasurable drugs that carry no major side effects.

Promised before. It was a lie then, it will be a lie now.

Seriously though is this sort of stuff just nostalgia bait for people who were naive enough to believe it the last time?

cool_man_bob··on Life After Work
Notice they’re building castles too. Look deeper you can even find insane sounding manifestos describing feudal style martial-loyalty oaths.
cool_man_bob··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
> These guys think they are prophets.

You say this somewhat jokingly, but I think they 100% believe something along those lines.

cool_man_bob··on Amazon confirms 14,000 job losses in corporate division
> Whether you are an enterprise developer or BigTech in the US you are on average making twice the median income in your area. There is usually no reason for you not to be stacking cash.

For now, expect that to be clawed back severely over the next few years.

cool_man_bob··on Ex-Intel CEOs mission to build Christian AI hasten the coming of Christs return
Can we not just baker act these people at this point?
cool_man_bob··on More big companies bet they can still grow without hiring
> These days, I think it's better to be in healthcare than IT.

Meh, nurse pay seemed alright till I learned how much they’re worked. Maybe physicians get a pretty good deal, but the reasons for that are also why you won’t be able to transition to that career.

cool_man_bob··on More big companies bet they can still grow without hiring
Social media has certainly made very big changes in societies, but overwhelmingly negative
cool_man_bob··on More big companies bet they can still grow without hiring
2. Has me damn ready to leave the industry if I’m not forced out.
cool_man_bob··on NORAD’s Cheyenne Mountain Combat Center, c.1966
What happened in the 70s to invoke such a reaction? I’m aware of vague issues that plagued the Carter admin, but not a good overall picture.
cool_man_bob··on ICE Will Use AI to Surveil Social Media
I’ve seen Trumps buddy’s (the inhuman lawnmower) big company appear on jobs.now posting for general midlevel dev positions. These people are liars and it’s so painfully obvious.

I’ve seen more people realize this since his Trump started beefing with Massie, but they still glaze him so hard as to not offend, that it’s basically meaningless.

cool_man_bob··on You are how you act
> They have loosened hate speech restrictions in some areas to curry favour with Trump but declared that Zionism is a protected category while they have banned a ton of Palestinian voices

That’s crazy because the most explicit antisemitism I see now days is on Facebook. And I mean real antisemitism.

cool_man_bob··on This World of Ours (2014) [pdf]
> Are there specific movies/TV shows that you're thinking of?

Not GP, but NCIS is the big one offhand. Of course that show has simply gotten more and more ridiculous on general over the years

cool_man_bob··on What happened to running what you wanted on your own machine?
That’s a cute soapbox, but I fail to see what it has to do with software freedom.
cool_man_bob··on Why Dictators Are the Best Devs: Commands, Not Suggestions
> Oh, but the dictator self-saboteurially railroads their ignorant bias without consideration and thereby wastes resources that could've been saved by asking questions and listening to experts.

Yeah, but then he just jumps ship to safer waters while the rest of you drown.

cool_man_bob··on Ask HN: Turned 25, Give Me Your Best Advice for the Next 25 Years?
Get some property. Something you own as much as possible. Maybe in one of those states eliminating property tax.

Everything else you will lose if the economy turns against you.

Also, a bit ironically don’t trust HN advice so easily. I feel for a lot of advice that was common on this site a decade ago that turned out to be utter bullshit.

cool_man_bob··on Francis Coppola selling his antique watch after $100M loss on "Megalopolis"
The other day. I saw a news article on Facebook roughly along the lines of:

“Celebrity A angry at people mourning the death of celebrity B”

Pretty odd sounding right? Upon looking at the comments though, people pointed out that Celebrity A was not angry at people “mourning” Celebrity B but “mocking”.

A bit of an odd typo, or perhaps a blatant lie to capture attention, among the most valuable currencies. There are no potential consequences only potential benefits to lying.

cool_man_bob··on Bill Gates warns AI will take most jobs, humans only work two days a week
Even worse, without use for them, they’re a liability. Having a boatload of now useless probably angry is a dangerous scenario. Peasant rebellion are rare, but too happen, particularly when starvation is on the table.

So the play will be to boil the frog so to say. Find a way to make it acceptable to get rid of these “extra” people without too much noise. Consider the current rhetoric around homeless people.

cool_man_bob··on Tell HN: OpenAI now requires ID verification and won't refund API credits
> I'm sure some of those came from people at OpenAI.

Don’t underestimate the volume of useful idiots.

cool_man_bob··on The Stagnant Order. and the End of Rising Powers
I see a lot of Africans where I live too, but, and I don’t mean this offensively, I’m not sure how or why they’re here. In most of my interactions with them, they’re Uber drivers. Maybe they’re relatives of someone immigrating on some visa or something.
cool_man_bob··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
> Telling a reporter they are "terrible" or talking about making America great. The way he does it resonates with a lot of folks.

Yeah, but I could do that. It’s pretty easy to, but I’m certain I wouldn’t be able to amass a cult of personality around myself.

Yet if I try, I’m pretty much universally considered an asshole, even from those who agree with me. There’s got to be more than just “he’s not afraid to say what we think”

cool_man_bob··on The Coming Clash of Civilizations
> The populist left and neo-reactionary right see identical reality.

My one hope is that these people fall out of favor with the Trump admin and face his wrath.

The neo feudalist fervor among these autists has been transparent for some time now, but in retrospect the constant calls to destroy (as opposed to reform) institutions like education is just one piece of breaking the middle class as a requisite for the sort of power structures they desire.

cool_man_bob··on Gen Z anger at ruling elites is erupting across the world
> They can't take over by themselves; what is needed is for the adults to stop caring

Can’t blame them with how much the current caregivers seem to be looting the nursery for their personal gain.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry too much. The big thing that seems to enable the success of these revolts (vs say the Arab spring) is that the military is also angry and will ally with the youth temporarily to seize power.
