cookieswumchorr··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
you can divide stock between 2 parties, maybe fair, maybe unfair, but that's it. A house will be up for sale when neither can afford it on their own, and a lot of money gets lost just in the process
cookieswumchorr··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
divorce, for example, is one major risk
cookieswumchorr··on Europe: close to power grid blackout (49,74Hz power line frequency)
does this happen if the heavy load is at region scale? because at small scale (within a village in my experience) the voltage would drop. I didn't measure the frequency though.

a sim card or a reliable dedicated voip number cost money and leak your identity. it is just a bit harder to trace (one more step involved). what telegram could do to allow private use and still avoid spam would be selling phone-less accounts for crypto. And maybe mark these anonymous accounts for other users to make them suspicious of potential scammers.
cookieswumchorr··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
depending on what the company does, different levels of security are appropriate. but, yeah, I would avoid taking valuable data with me on a flight to shady countries (the US being among the top 10 of that list)
cookieswumchorr··on Telegram publishes users' locations online
for telegram you need a phone number as well, which is bad if not for security, then for privacy reasons

taking payments is here they can intervene, by forcing payment systems to block those platforms. Good thing we have crypto
cookieswumchorr··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
exactly, audio is the most important. Nobody needs to see your unshaven sleepy quarantine face in 4K. But if they can't hear you, or there is a lot of noise, the meeting is ruined
cookieswumchorr··on We can have democracy or we can have Facebook
I was replying mainly to parent's statement that privacy and freedom focused platforms end up having a specific audience. And I don't want us to lose any of those platforms. Facebook & twitter can do whatever they want, there is no reason to be there in 2020 unless it's part of your job in the marketing department.
cookieswumchorr··on We can have democracy or we can have Facebook
censorship is connected to regimes who killed (and continue to kill) way more people then all the terror attacks combined. Also, if you let out governments and look at non-government terror, those who are internet-rooted, are a tiny fraction, and a joke compared to the real terror networks.

It's been a year since the Halle attack, the attacker is a joke: a typical internet incel as you would picture him. Infantile, insecure, physically weak, clumsy with his firearms. It would be literally funny if not for the two people he killed. Sorry for them, but, should we really sacrifice basic freedoms and rights, being afraid of THIS GUY?

cookieswumchorr··on How the Golden State Killer was found: A covert operation and private DNA
was there a lot of social pressure connected to the voluntary testing? Did they keep in anonymous? The suspect must have had a reason to run, instead of just refusing the test
cookieswumchorr··on Camouflaged Military Bunkers of Switzerland (2015)
i am afraid, these times are over with the advance of drone technology, look at the last Karabakh conflict. it's not just the US anymore, but lots of countries can use affordable drones an operate without much human or economic loss. Whereas the side practicing mountain guerrila tactics will have to abandon all civil economic activity, and still lose lives (you cannot stay in shelters all the time)
cookieswumchorr··on Camouflaged Military Bunkers of Switzerland (2015)
as if they had perfect reason for their previous invasions
cookieswumchorr··on Indian government blocks access to forty-three mobile apps
on small scale, consistently ignore and boycott all attempts by governments to do so. They are not allmighty, they cannot place an armed cop behind every single citicen. If you are in a country that has some functioning democratic institutions, you may also try using them

cookieswumchorr··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
Exactly, and they don't get much sunlight while in a hospital
cookieswumchorr··on Tolstoy as philosopher
no way, he became known after his great novels in the 60s, he had no influence on the liberation which was officially pronounced 1861. Maybe as part of the overall public opinion in the upper class (he was a count, after all)
cookieswumchorr··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
I'm not talking super-cheap places and software mills here. 50K is about the entry salary to get a EU blue card.
cookieswumchorr··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
I believe a startup of 50K coders also can create something of value for humanity and be commercially successful. It will just happen in another part of the world. It's up to the US where they want to draw a line.
cookieswumchorr··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
but your average small startup still needs to hire people somehow, right? Is there still free workforce on the Market?

maybe take a look at projectors. they have their downsides, mine is a bit noisy, but I got me a cheap one for less than $200, just to see if its a good idea. Covers half the living room wall with a screen. Is connected to a PC, I can use my bluetooth mouse and keyboard from the tv couch, which means i can surf, download stuff or watch streams without getting up. And, of course, no ads and no bullshit udates

cookieswumchorr··on Pavel Durov wants a law to make Apple allow iPhone users install other app store
as an expat you need this all the time, to have specific apps for two locations, including government apps, commute apps, even retail bonus apps, they all have those idiotic geographical limitations, and are often not to be found on common APK sites. So you need a friend with the "right" location setting to extract and send you the APK. Troublesome, but at least with Android its possible to do so.

cookieswumchorr··on Whatever happened to the noble art of the manly weep?
that's an interesting thing. Other than perception, could it be a social strata thing? Kids who's parents are better off get a healthier diet (or, in poor places, just more food). This affects how they grow
