constantlm··on Project Hammer: reduce collusion in the Canadian grocery sector
This could be useful for New Zealand too, where things are even worse and a duopoly effectively controls the whole market. Might put this on my ever-growing list of projects I want to do.
constantlm··on [dead]
Surely it's not actually possible for apps to listen in on audio 24/7? At least on iOS, you would be notified that this is happening? Or am I being naive?
constantlm··on L402: The Missing Piece in the Internet's Payment Infrastructure
Actually, while amount of nodes have not grown, capacity of lightning has steadily been growing. https://bitcoinvisuals.com/lightning
constantlm··on L402: The Missing Piece in the Internet's Payment Infrastructure
What an ignorant take.
constantlm··on Company offers unofficial security patches for Windows 10 until 2030
Just whip out W32DASM like in the old days.
constantlm··on Cirkoban: Sokoban meets cellular automata written in Scheme
Supaplex vibes also
constantlm··on Ask HN: How did RedHat Linux get it's first users?
I got it from a Linux magazine bundled CD, along with Mandrake and others. Not sure how early of a user I was though.
constantlm··on Hertz Charging a Tesla Renter for Gas Was Not an Isolated Incident
I've seen enough negative Hertz-related discussions on HN over the past few months to entirely avoid them going forward.
constantlm··on The Rabbit R1 is probably running Android and is powered by an Android app
> "rabbit r1 is not an Android app. We are aware there are some unofficial rabbit OS app/website emulators out there."

Using Android for this makes a ton of sense. Lying about it does not.

constantlm··on RubyJS-Vite
WASM?
constantlm··on HP raising Instant Ink subscription pricing significantly
I've been running my super cheap Brother HL-1210W since probably 2015 with the cheapest toner I can find, and it still goes amazingly well.
constantlm··on Bitcoin mining used more water than New York City last year
How much water did the banking industry use? Or the gold mining and storage industries?
constantlm··on Salad Fingers and the dawn of ‘weird YouTube’
salad findels
constantlm··on OwnCloud vulnerability with max severity score comes under "mass" exploitation
Correct link: https://arstechnica.com/security/2023/11/owncloud-vulnerabil...
constantlm··on 4D Gaussian Splatting for Real-Time Dynamic Scene Rendering
Could you point us to some examples of old games using this technique? Would be awesome to see.
constantlm··on Atlassian Acquires Loom
great exit, but rip
constantlm··on Linux from Scratch Version 12.0
Awesome that this is still around. I learned an ton about how Linux works from doing an LFS install circa 2005 that's still useful to me today.
constantlm··on Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944)
Thanks. This will come in handy when the robots take over.
constantlm··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
This seems incredibly short-sighted.
constantlm··on DPReview.com to close
This is already the case with cameras in consumer phones.
constantlm··on The Libyan Army has found the 10 missing drums with 2.5 tons of natural Uranium
Are these drums lined with lead?
constantlm··on How the marijuana ‘green rush’ fell apart
Not sure why this was downvoted. Across the world it is absolutely the case that we optimise for shelf-life and appearance over taste. This becomes especially obvious when you grow your own tomatoes from seed.
constantlm··on The Windows Subsystem for Android now runs Android 13 in beta
While I know what it is, it reads the opposite way for me - like, it's some sort of Windows running on Android
constantlm··on Spotifyd
I've got a setup where I play photo slideshows on my TV, and also want to play Spotify through my TV/speakers. I've resorted to just spinning up a Spotify webview when the RPI boots XFCE, and it works pretty reliably so far.
constantlm··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
Sounds like they're pretty confident this isn't an issue:

>Our fees are based on the plant producing at its optimal performance. If the plant underperforms for any reason, we curtail our fees – creating strong incentive and perfect alignment with the long-term asset owner.

constantlm··on Show HN: Can you tell if an image is AI-generated?
In reality, the use of AI images would be cherry picked, so this is a good test.
constantlm··on A tiny school in western NSW has made a small fortune from its first wheat crop
Could somebody help me understand which part of the process was handled by the students? From what I can tell prepping, planting and harvesting at the scale of 85ha would be done with giant machines?
constantlm··on KDE beats macOS
Please closely read my comment again - I said "Several of the things listed are false", not "the author's issue is invalid". The author would have had a stronger case had he not listed things that are just not true.
constantlm··on Ask HN: Alternative ways to make money with coding and system skills?
Just want to say that Lunar is amazing.
constantlm··on KDE beats macOS
Several of the things listed are false (like the lack of ability to open files with your keyboard, which you can do with cmd-⬇) and app window switching (cmd+~)
