consensus1··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
I'm talking about now. Most recently the liberals took their case all the way to the supreme court (and lost) insisting on their right to run a racial quota system in universities.
consensus1··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
That makes you a supporter of the existing immigration system
consensus1··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
In the US it's always the liberals arguing for special treatment baked into the law for their favored groups and the conservatives argue for equal treatment. The liberals then argue back that equal treatment is de facto discrimination against then.
consensus1··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
But implicit in your statement is "accept my position on immigration." You are probably not interested in giving in to the conservative position on immigration in order to get them on your side against Altman.

Your heavily restricted, highly educated, legal immigration examples are a tiny fraction of what immigration is in the US. The tens of millions of unskilled illegals allowed into the country is a wage suppression tool.

But why not just use a LLM?
consensus1··on A Privacy Analysis of Web and Mobile Conversational AI Agents [pdf]
The media has been hyperventilating about how evil the tech industry is for the last decade.

But we are not really like Milhouse. In reality the teachers didn't care about us enough to make fun of us in the teachers lounge. We were just that year's batch of work soon to be forgotten when they move on to the next. This is exactly the same as the advertising companies. You are just a member of the cohort of a particular target campaign. Nobody cares about you or even knows you are part of that target cohort.

Unless you become a target of the government. Then people a lot worse than any teacher you ever had will be looking through it, and they, unfortunately, do care.

There was trust left in the US government to be scuttled? Could have fooled me.

Downvotes signal going against the hive mind, not being incorrect, so they signal to me something that I should be sure to read.

This is not telling the full story. Biden tried to block new oil and gas leases, but he was blocked from doing so by the courts. Oil production was up not because of, but rather in spite of the Biden administration.

I do not buy that the SPR is effectively empty at 35-42% of capacity
consensus1··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
That is not at all obvious. Iran's Hormuz leverage has proven much less effective than they had originally hoped for and now they are feeling the economic cost of the decision. The SPR is drawing at a rate of 400K bbl/wk over the past few weeks. That's not great, but very far from catastrophic and is sustainable for years at current level of 285 mmbbl. It was recently Iran that tried to get the US back to the negotiating table, not the other way around.
consensus1··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
The headline is hiding the fact that this was a fairly modest 400K bbl draw for the week.
consensus1··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Really even more since almost nobody actually uses 50 mbps bandwidth continuously
consensus1··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Your claim "Imagine you individually copied and sold libgen" doesn't hold up because there are two parts, copying and selling. Copyright law considers the copying part to be a small civil offense punishable by a fine. It's the selling part that is much more highly illegal and can result in criminal punishment. OpenAI only did the copying part.

What is the median price of one of these SFH in this neighborhood? I doubt very much that "middle class people who are willing to buy a house where they don't need a car and want to raise their family in the city center" is an accurate assessment here. This is a housing policy that allows the most valuable land for high density housing to be monopolized by a small cohort of rich people who have enough money to afford both the convenience of proximity to downtown and also the luxury of a whole house + yard to themselves, probably making up less than 1% of the metro area population.

If there's one thing that is universally hated left, right, and center, it's traffic.
consensus1··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
It shouldn't be. The idea that writing down the lyrics to a song and putting them on the internet for no financial gain at all should be punishable by some big record label is the kind of over zealous IP protection that 99% of HN users would have been against until something changed a few years ago and this place became a haven for copyright extremists.

Is this a direct inference call to the model or does it use a web search tool to pull the answer? In the former case I guess that could be infringement. In the latter case it is no more than a tool that facilitates it and would be not be infringement any more than Xerox is infringing if you use their copier to copy the front page of the NYT.
consensus1··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
How did they get a free pass? From the court decisions I have read they were held liable for downloading pirate copies and paid large fines for it. That might have been Meta, not OAI, though, but the point is the same.

Please provide me an example prompt to do so or some algorithm to extract from the weights for an open source model. I will accept any copyrighted work, any model.

Give me one example of something distributed by OpenAI that is copyrighted by a third party.
consensus1··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Nothing is inverted. OpenAI was never engaged in any sort of distribution of pirated copies.

Funny thing is that on HN "declare copyright dead" was a popular opinion. For some reason that did a 180 a couple years ago.

Please give me the location of any copyrighted work in the weights of any open source model or a prompt that will retrieve it.
consensus1··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
This is Youtube. You can just not go there. You have no right to set the terms they offer their services by.
consensus1··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Maybe you think so, but if Youtube offered a choice between targeted ads or 5x more untargeted I bet that > 90% of people would take the former.

There are only 2 divisions in the constitution, federal and state. Everything further down is not covered. States are allowed to rule over counties and cities absolutely, and can even dissolve them entirely.
