conroe64··on \d less efficient than [0-9]
That wouldn't work. First, it will only grab at only one whitespace character at the beginning and at the end. Second, if there was whitespace at the beginning or the end but not both, it won't match at all. "^\s* (.* ?)\s* $/$1/g" would work.

conroe64··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
I'm 38 and have been weight lifting on and off for around 20 years, but never was very successful at it. I think I maxed around a 225 bench at one point, but now I'm much less than that.

Anyway, I just discovered HIIT training, which has made a world of difference. I'm actually gaining strength and mass every time I work out, and I'm eating less now than I did on SS.

SS works for some people, but I think it depends on your genetics. Or maybe your right and I'm not eating enough. However, my system just can't handle that much food without GI problems. Also, I was getting a big fat belly along with it.

HIIT training has been working for me and after 2 months the gains are still there and better than those I was getting on SS. There also is more evidence that it works than SS has, I believe. Like I posted on another thread, checkout the boise experiment: http://boiseexperiment.com/HeavyDuty/?page_id=308

Anyway, each to his own.

I wasn't drinking a gallon of milk a day, as recommended by Rippletoe, although I was eating more. It gave me a big belly, gastrointestinal problems and gained about 10 lbs, which was another issue, too.

I could have eaten even more though. But I don't get the whole eat until your stuffed mantra either. It seems so unnatural and unhealthy.

conroe64··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
I tried Mark Rippletoe's program, and it didn't work for me. IMO, it worked my legs way too much. Squats 3 times a week? I went up in the beginning, but plateaued in a couple of months and then got the flu (and I rarely get sick). After a couple of weeks off, my legs were still sore. I tried to get back into it, but the constant pain and lack of progress finally made me give up.

Also, I don't understand why his routine is so lopsided as to favor the lower body.

Right now I'm doing Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty routine, which after 3 months has been fantastic. It uses HIT principles, where you are only doing the minimum work necessary to stimulate the muscle. This translates to 1 set per exercise twice a week or so.

Check out http://boiseexperiment.com/HeavyDuty/?page_id=308 for a very detailed account of the results of doing such a workout.

conroe64··on The Lethality of Loneliness
I'm in the same boat. I'm also have attracted a lot of, how to put this, people who use other people, since I'm not good at standing up for myself, so that, therefore, makes wary of people.

My belief is being social is a skill and I have to learn to get better at that skill in order to attract more normal people. I've been trying the following recently, although I haven't had enough time with any of it to know how well it will work, but just to give you some ideas:

lang-8.com - this site allows you to correct English of people trying to learn it. You can post a journal as well in another language you're trying to learn. My hope is that speaking another language might change the way I interact with people in my native language. But also, people there are very friendly, since you're helping them.

mmo games - trying to get into eve online. Maybe learn to establish relationships that way.

teamspeak - this has an online chat I've been using to practice smalltalk.

I tried a psychologist as well, but his philosophy of life and the way he related to me seemed so goofy that I quit. Also, it was quite expensive for what I got out of it.

conroe64··on How a nation of junkies went cold turkey
It wasn't displacing heroin. Heroin didn't make a resurgence. Krododil did, but its use was not nearly as prevalent as the use of Subutex was. The point is that the society got a lot safer and more productive after the Subutex problem was fixed.

You don't need to worry about parking your segway outside the place your going to if you enter the building with it. So, opposed to using a bicycle or scooter, someone stealing it while you're away is not an issue.

It's upright, so you can be seen crossing the street by motorists, which gives it an advantage over a motorized wheel chair.

It saves energy compared to driving a car and it's use would greatly reduce traffic where cars are normally used.

Thanks, I didn't know ETF's were treated like stocks for tax purposes.
conroe64··on Meet Mr. Money Mustache, the man who retired at 30
If you are not going through a tax free retirement account, I'd advise against mutual funds, since the profit is taxed every year. Instead, I'd recommend using a stock newsletter.

There is a rating service that independently tracks the profits of 180 stock newsletters and has done so since 1980. It's called the Hulbert's Financial Digest. From this you can pick one with a good track record, and then invest directly in stocks.

This allows you to plan your taxes much better (sell the losers for a similar company in the same industry and keep the winners). I'm up over 70% in unrealized, and therefore untaxable, gains this way.

Sorry, I didn't realize what you meant by that. I've expressed dissenting opinions on tech forums before and had some negative experiences, so I guess I was overly sensitive about it.

It was more a comment about how the story was expressed and what was said by those in it. Just as something said can be corny, a joke, a wedding proposal, etc. imo, an event can be considered corny, if there are a lot of corny things happening within it, although I'm no expert on the English language.

conroe64··on New Solution Can Cut Video File Size By Half – Without Losing Quality
Maybe I'm not the most knowledgeable guy here, but I really don't see what you're getting at. The per-pixel diffs look nearly the same. I downloaded the "hipnshoot.zip" and yes the photos look identical. But then I fired up gimp and re-compressed the high quality photo to reduce the size even more than the "jpegmini" version, and I can't tell the difference. Here are the file sizes:

-rw-r--r-- 1 tim users 4930482 Dec 1 21:22 hipnshoot.jpg

-rw-r--r-- 1 tim users 1310430 Feb 26 08:27 hipnshoot_gimp.jpg

-rw-r--r-- 1 tim users 1352882 Dec 3 09:16 hipnshoot_mini.jpg

I put them here: http://www.rareventure.com/jpegmini/

"hipnshoot_mini.jpg" is the "jpegmini" version and "hipnshoot_gimp.jpg" is the one I compressed with plain old gimp.

Not to mention another instance of technology that will interfere with people's abilities to drive. Remember the epidemic of people texting while driving. Now imagine a device that allows you to do that, as well as surf the web, read the reviews of the movie/restaurant you're going to, check sports scores and stock prices, etc. all at the tip of your tongue, and not made illegal to do so while driving, yet.
conroe64··on Bitcoin breaks 30 USD
Another thing to worry about is something better coming along. As soon as it does, bitcoins will crash and never recover, since their only worth is they are better than anything else for making anonymous secure trades. If Ripple or soemthing else begins to take off, that may change.

conroe64··on Why It's Time to Break the Code of Silence at the Airport
Fine, so replace the TSA with what? This is what bothers me, so much condemnation without supplying any alternative.
conroe64··on Why It's Time to Break the Code of Silence at the Airport
You float the idea of a conspiracy to smuggle box cutters on a plane? Box cutters? So the terrorists supposedly had the co-conspirators in the airport and out of all the weapons to bring on board, they choose a tool with a one inch blade to take over the plane with, as opposed to something like say, a gun, or even a hunting knife.
conroe64··on Why It's Time to Break the Code of Silence at the Airport
It's a pretty simplistic viewpoint to think that nothing should have been done to amp of security and the problem would just take care of itself after the tragedy of 9/11. Yes, maybe the exact same plan wouldn't work again, but downing a plane would take far less compliance by the other passengers than running it into a building.
conroe64··on Why It's Time to Break the Code of Silence at the Airport
So many people here are acting like nothing happened to justify the existence of the TSA. Yet, there were two buildings destroyed in the one of the most iconic cities in the world, the pentagon was damaged, and the Whitehouse was almost also destroyed, with more than 3000 civilians killed, and all of this can be directly attributed to the lack of airport security.

Yes, the TSA does a questionable job, but the constant whining and calls to demolish it without the acknowledge of the need for changes from the "good old days" before 9/11 is not only sophomoric but downright dangerous.

conroe64··on Coinbase Is Now Selling Over $1M USD Of Bitcoin Per Month
Since the amount of mining is going fluctuate based on the potential profit, I'd say the electricity cost of mining is stabilizing to a factor around the price of bitcoins rather than the other way around.
conroe64··on Coinbase Is Now Selling Over $1M USD Of Bitcoin Per Month
Just because some things have intrinsic value and have been used as a currency doesn't imply that something that doesn't have intrinsic value and is a currency can't be trusted.

You have to take a look at society's motivations, situation and psychological makeup, and from there you can make a prediction as to whether a currency can be trusted or not.

conroe64··on Coinbase Is Now Selling Over $1M USD Of Bitcoin Per Month
I think you need to include speculators in your equation. If S is the number of bitcoins being horded, we would get (M - S)V = PQ. Since the perception seems to be shifting where more and more people believe that Q is going to continue to increase, S becomes larger (and in extreme cases, a bubble).
