conradk··on Hosting for Node.js apps done right
This sounds like a joke to me.

1- "Hosting for Node.js apps done right": Like everything else is done wrong? That's just weird.

2- What does "designed for cloud" mean?

3- "Free support"? How gullible do you think we are? At 6e/mo, anyone that believes they're getting any kind of "Free support" is wrong. Or else this service is going to fail big time.

Now some constructive criticism: I see "FTP access". But as a dev, I would have liked to see something like FTPS, SFTP or better yet, SSH.

conradk··on Ello: an ad-free social network
A developer social network? Coderwall or even Github to some extent. A designer social network? Dribble. A photographers social network? 500px.

The problem with social networks is that there are thousands. For every possible thing. And some are already very good at what they do. People should try to find new ideas. New business models. Things that actually solve a problem we have. A new Facebook is useless IMO.

Let's talk about privacy. Having nothing to hide is not a good reason to just ignore our right to privacy. The day you have something to hide, you won't be able to hide it any more. Also, this gives the government ways to pressure you should they want to because they have everything they need. For instance, imagine you want to create a political party someday? Well, forget it, if the government knows every single thing about you: they'll probably pressure you or disclose things to break you.

But sadly, few people think about privacy this way and prefer to use Google to DuckDuckGo, Gmail to Fastmail, YouTube to Vimeo, Facebook to Diaspora, etc.

conradk··on Show HN: Yet another url shortner xiv.in, comments please
Another idea would be to auto select the link when you click it. This means you could have a "workflow" similar to: click, cmd/ctrl + c, done
conradk··on Show HN: Yet another url shortner xiv.in, comments please
IMO, what would be cool would be an open API where you don't need any kind of developer key to create a short link.

Isn't Bitly free too?

Why one useless redirection?

conradk··on Show HN: WeFinance: Earn 4% interest by lending to real people with low risk
Thanks for the clear answer and good to hear! Any plans to expand this type of concept to Europe (or other regions) someday? :-)
conradk··on Show HN: WeFinance: Earn 4% interest by lending to real people with low risk
This is a nice concept ! It seems like the "natural" thing to do IMO, just lend from people to people. I'm wondering though: Is such a system legal everywhere?
conradk··on Show HN: The “No Fluff” License
This is in fact exactly what I was looking for, it seems. I'm just going to remove the git repo then. As you say, if a similar license already exists, there is no need for a new one.
conradk··on Show HN: The “No Fluff” License
Thanks for reading it. That's exactly what it is meant to be. I don't feel like making every single contributor sign a CLA and manage the signed CLAs... I'd rather have that built into the licensing. And since I haven't found a license that does this, I decided to write one up. However, if such a license already exists, I'd love to see it. Would you know of any?
conradk··on Show HN: NodeGear – Node.js hosting on Docker
Looks neat and simple! Makes me want to do Node again! :-)

Seems really affordable too! Is NodeGear profitable (already)? Will it be at the current price point?

conradk··on Introducing Jibo
The video makes it look amazing from a technology point of view. Also makes me think of the movie "Her" in a scary way.

Would love to see videos from regular people (not the company) showing it off.

conradk··on Show HN: DailyFact – Learn one new thing everyday
That's fun. Would have loved to be able to get email notification when the "one thing from that day" is available. Just a suggestion :-)
conradk··on [dead]
Thanks. I'll give it a try, as I do use OSX at work :-)

Outside of work, I'm on Ubuntu though. Any suggestions that work on Linux would be appreciated too.

conradk··on [dead]
Glad to see a new build! It's been a while. I actually bought a Sublime license in March 2013 and kind of got the feeling that the momentum for Sublime had gone away a few months later.

I've been using Atom for a couple of months now and really like it, except it is very slow for things like searching an entire folder for a word or having 50 active cursors.

What are some other editors similar to Sublime/Atom with good plugins and active community?

conradk··on Show HN: round.io, our side project for the last two years
I like the idea. Sounds interesting ! :-)

A few things though: - I find the title "Get instant knowledge from everything nearby." to not really explain what Round does. Sounds more like a description of an analytic's system than a social app. - At the bottom of the page, I can "register", but why should I? What will a registration get me?

conradk··on Show HN: Rustastic SMTP – an SMTP server library written in Rust
There actually is an example in the README. However, since the library itself doesn't yet do a lot, the example is small.

Thanks for the link to SubEthaSMTP. Custom sender, recipient and message handlers are definitely on the roadmap. Connection limits and configuration of "all the things" are too, but I'm not too sure how to implement them yet. I'll have a look at SubEthaSMTP's source to see how it's done there.

conradk··on Show HN: Rustastic SMTP – an SMTP server library written in Rust
EHLO,

Author here. This library is in early development and there's a lot to be done. However, I'd love to hear what you think of it and how it can be improved.

QUIT.

conradk··on Show HN: Blot, a static blog powered by Dropbox
Looks cool! Simple to say the least, which is not easy to do!

But I'm worried about something. The credit card input on the payment page shows a lock even though the form is NOT submitted over HTTPS... that makes it look like you're blatantly lying to your customers. Am I missing something?

EDIT: I was missing something. While the HN post links to the HTTPS version, I somehow ended up on a non HTTPS version of the site at some point. Which seems to allow sending CC information over a non encrypted form.

conradk··on MDN Database Disclosure
I don't think encrypting an email address would create any issues. In fact, if I was to provide a service, I'd save the hash email address for easy authentication (ie hash the email given during a login and compare with the hash you have) and one encrypted version of the email address so I can use it if needed (to inform the user or whatever).

I started getting a lot of spam about one month ago too and even emailed LastPass a bit angry. But this Mozilla incident could well be the cause of the spam...

conradk··on NSA targets the privacy-conscious
If everyone was more privacy conscious in the Internet, the NSA and other agencies that do mass surveillance would not be able to target, well, everyone. That'd be the end of mass surveillance. Therefore, it's probably better to be a little privacy conscious and use services outside the USA whenever available, for two reasons: - if the economical impact on the US economy is bad, the gov would have to rethink things - it makes it harder and more expensive for the NSA to spy on you

Ultimately, trying to hide from the NSA is pointless. If they actually want your information, they'll get it. But making it impossible for them to do mass surveillance is a whole other thing. And an important one !

conradk··on PayPal Shuts Down Secure Messaging Service ProtonMail’s Crowdfunding Account
Does Google Wallet have a checkout service? If so, could be one alternative.

Otherwise, their is Braintree, Stripe, and more similar services.

EDIT: Seems like Braintree is owned by Paypal. So not really an alternative.

conradk··on Dart 1.5
Dart is not meant to enable building "hello world" apps though.
conradk··on Announcing the FastMail Calendar
I've ben using beta.fastmail.fm since I signed up. The calendar has been in Beta for months. Big bugs would most likely already have been fixed.
conradk··on Please rate our new landing page.
I don't really get what the site is about. Sure I can "Drag & drop anything anywhere", but why would I want to spend my day dragging and dropping things around? What does the dragging and dropping enable me to do?
conradk··on Rust by Example
That seems odd for a student. Let me explain what I mean.

As a student myself (formerly in CS, now Software Development), I believe that getting into a new language with a nice community, such as Rust, seems like a very good way to learn from the design mistakes that the implementors do along the way, unlike with a language like C where not much is changing.

It may also be a good place to contribute, especially since docs, tutorials and simple yet useful libraries might not yet be very present even though they are needed.

Finally, you state the the compiler is no help because the errors aren't online. I agree that this is a valid point. However, I would just ask on Stackoverflow or on the #rust IRC and then contribute the answers you get back to Stackoverflow for others to see.

conradk··on The Birth and Death of JavaScript [video]
Just like with any language, as long as you read the docs of the stuff you use, you don't get this problem (you might get others with automatic type conversion and missing arguments like the speaker says, but not this)... this is just stupid.

Try this:

int subtract(int b, int a) { return a - b; }

int test = subtract(5, 3); // != 2, just read the damn docs

Oh, C sucks now !

The talk is quite fun and interesting to watch though.

And the end is pretty cool.

conradk··on Sandstorm Personal Cloud Platform
Most software we use is either proprietary and uses ads/licenses/etc to make money. Successful open source software (as in what non-technical people use) seems to be at the core of something that generates revenue (Linux for instance). No ?

You can provide notifications on the web. Support maybe limited to some browsers only but it is possible.

This works in Chrome: http://jsfiddle.net/dandv/wT26x/1/

I think Safari has a system for this too: https://developer.apple.com/notifications/safari-push-notifi...

Firefox: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/API/notification

conradk··on Introducing the Humble Store
I like how they clearly display what platform the games are for and which games are DRM free.
