conkeisterdoor··on Meteor Explodes over Massachusetts
Hah you're a Nick in Watertown too?
conkeisterdoor··on Meteor Explodes over Massachusetts
I'm in Watertown on a busy road and was near an open window when it exploded. I thought a truck had slammed into my building and was baffled when I saw everything was fine.

The numbering of the challenges (eg T1001) is a little confusing to me too. My assumption is that the first number after the T is a tactic ID and the remaining digits are the challenge/issue ID. Maybe the challenge/issue ID is 3 digits because there's room (a plan?) to add many more examples?

I like the substance of this conceptual model as well (and may actually use some of it in my own personal productivity framework :-)), but don't see why it needs to be presented this way. It's neat, but I'd personally rather all the content be on one page, and maybe with a search feature for if/when the list of example challenges/issues grows.

conkeisterdoor··on Let's put Tailscale on a jailbroken Kindle
This is what I'm currently doing sans tailscale. I'm running Ubooquity on a server in my homelab as my OPDS service to serve the ebooks hosted on a mounted NAS. I can download any of those books from my Kobo with a few presses on Koreader. It's pretty great. My Kobo Forma is probably one of my best and most used tech purchases. I've had it since 2019 and couldn't be happier with the device + setup. Getting it set up with tailscale so I can fetch ebooks when I'm away from home sounds like a pretty good upgrade.

+1

It's very nice and worth the $75 IMO. The new font builder they have gives you a lot of options to tweak/customize the typeface, which is also very nice.

conkeisterdoor··on 7-Zip for Windows can now use more than 64 CPU threads for compression
Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. WinZip is a slow and bloated abomination, especially compared to 7-Zip. The right-click menu context entry for 7-Zip is very convenient and runs lightning fast. WinZip can't compete at all.
conkeisterdoor··on 9front "clause 15 common elements of maus and star type" released
I think the title is just the name of the newest release of 9front (an active fork of plan9), similar to how Bookworm is the name for Debian release 12.

conkeisterdoor··on Lucid dreaming app triples users' awareness in dreams, study finds
I just read your comment after posting mine and it sounds like you've had a similar (but unfortunately opposite!) experience. The vivid dreams stop for me a few weeks after they start. Are your vivid dreams "permanent", or has it only been a short while since you started experiencing them?
conkeisterdoor··on Lucid dreaming app triples users' awareness in dreams, study finds
Indeed, and IME, the dreams I have after taking a break from daily THC use are extremely vivid - to the point that I can remember them in detail for days afterwards. I enjoy that a lot.

TIL after so many years that /usr isn't an abbreviation of "user". "UNIX/user system resources" makes a lot more sense in retrospect. Guess I should have RTFM a long time ago!

This is so cool, thanks for sharing! If I had a yard/space to build one of these, I would totally try rigging one up to drive a little heat engine.

This looks great! I would use this if you had a dispatcher for using a custom/local OpenAI-compatible API like eg llama.cpp server. If I can make some time I'll take a stab at writing one and submit a PR :)
conkeisterdoor··on Paramount Wipes South Park, Daily Show Clips, and More from Websites
That certainly makes sense. But Disney+ has a desktop app, and I tried downloading and using that, but still never got resolution greater than 720p. I wish they would at least fix their app so PC users could stream in HD without feeling the need to rely on piracy.
conkeisterdoor··on Paramount Wipes South Park, Daily Show Clips, and More from Websites
I'm not sure, but I sure am not renewing my subscription either. I stream on a PC, and I have not once been able to watch a Disney+ show at any resolution higher than 720p, despite following all of their troubleshooting steps. They "scan your system and connection to determine the best resolution" (paraphrase), and don't allow you to choose the resolution. After talking to their support half a dozen times and escalating my request, I have seen no improvement. I'm convinced it's deliberate.

conkeisterdoor··on Ask HN: Machine learning engineers, what do you do at work?
This sounds almost exactly like my day-to-day as a solo senior data engineer — minus building and training ML models, and I don't work in healthcare. My peers are all very non-technical business directors who are very knowledgeable about their domains, and I'm like a wizard who can conjure up time savings/custom reporting/actionable insights for them.

Collaborating with them is great, and has been a great exercise in learning how to explain complex ideas to non-technical business people. Which has the side effect of helping me get better at what I do (because you need a good understanding of a topic to be able to explain it both succinctly and accurately to others). It has also taught me to appreciate the business context and reasoning that can drive decisions about how a business uses or develops data/software.

I'm also a long time cannabis user and can't remember dreams at all with THC in my system. I'll vape/smoke/eat edibles daily for weeks or months at a time, then stop cold turkey. A few days after I stop, my dreams become super clear and vivid, and I remember most of the dream in great detail for days. This happens almost every night for the next week or 2 after stopping. It always happens every time I stop. Been doing this for years and I always look forward to stopping cold turkey so I can have those super vivid dreams.

I really enjoy the experience, but granted, none of the dreams were nightmares. I wonder if this happens to other people, and how badly it could affect people who use cannabis to suppress recurring nightmares.

conkeisterdoor··on Building a starter pack for an API-as-a-Service
Tangential, but I'm working on a personal recipe manager so I can easily search for my recipes and render them to PDF with a uniform style. But I decided that for v1, the database will just store ingredients as full strings, because I didn't want to write the code to parse them. I may just sign up for your service to do the parsing for me :) Thanks for sharing
