conk··on Firefighters say they’re swamped by calls for routine care from senior homes
A baby can’t turn the stove on and burn down the house or attempt to drive a car and kill someone. Some forms of mental decline require specialized care facilities for the safety of both the elderly and their family members.
conk··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
This doesn’t add up. How was a summary judgement issued without you ever being served? Why didn’t you appeal the decision after being made aware of the issue?
conk··on New Site Tracking Reported Tesla Fires
Great work putting this together. Really highlights just how safe Tesla’s approach is to lithium batteries. Considering the number of cars, Powerwalls and mega packs out there I was expecting far more incidents.
conk··on Apple Will Not Reinstate Epic’s Fortnite Developer Account
If HOAs are so bad why does anyone buy a home in an HOA neighborhood?

If iOS only running Apple’s signed code is so bad why do people keep buying iOS devices?

conk··on California unemployment claims rocket higher, worst in five months
How does a mask mandate impact economic recovery?
conk··on Fortnite will be blacklisted by Apple until all appeals exhausted
I believe most companies would refrain from engaging in new business with a customer who has pending litigation against them. Apple may not want to ban them and is just waiting until the appeal process has settled before reengaging with Epic under whatever terms are ultimately agreed upon between both parties and the courts.
conk··on Fortnite will be blacklisted by Apple until all appeals exhausted
The court ruling didn’t require apple to reinstate epic’s developer account. Apple can still, at their discretion, decide who can and can’t develop apps for iOS and Mac app stores.
conk··on Google to Buy New York City Office Building for $2.1B
What’s the dating scene like out in the countryside?
conk··on There are six internet links on my office on wheels—seven when Starlink arrives
Why did you opt for a UDM-Pro instead of virtualizing the router on exsi? It would save space and power over running another appliance.
conk··on The smart home is flailing as a concept
Codes abs standards have working groups composed of industry, consumers and inspectors. New groups are created all the time to address new technology. Unfortunately the initial cost to set up is typically too high for most individuals leaving progress in building codes/standards up to corporations.
conk··on The smart home is flailing as a concept
Lutron RA/RA2 has put connectivity into light switches for nearly 25 years. It’s still a supported product with many devices still in operation.
conk··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
Just wait for the follow up in 2.5 years when this guy goes to turn in his lease and is told he has to pay to replace the battery due to an unapproved modification. If I were him I wouldn’t have made a video with a +1m subscriber YouTube celebrity. I’m sure this car is on Tesla’s radar now.
conk··on NodeMCU ESP32-C3 WiFi and BLE IoT boards show up for about $4
When did ESP 32 switch to RISC-V? Are there any comparisons on how the change impacts performance?
conk··on Alcohol-free beer is fizzing
This is a valid concern. I did years of homebrew beer before I learned there is food grade and non-food grade CO2. You should not be using non-food grade to carbonate water or beer. It can have oils and other residue in it.
conk··on New ‘mirror’ fabric can cool wearers by nearly 5°C
There are several studies on the relationship between vehicle weight and road wear and tear. 1 fully loaded semi does more damage than nearly 10,000 cars. The reality is if costs were assigned appropriately large aspects of life would become unworkable.
conk··on Apple expanding outside of SV as it struggles to recruit and retain talent
Not too long ago Cupertino and Mountain View were lower-middle working class neighborhoods.
conk··on Manufacturing next-generation electronics like they are T-Shirts
Cost of production in Canada or Mexico is close enough to Asian suppliers with the benefit of shorter lead times, less language barrier and similarly time zones.
conk··on The Electrification of Everything
I’ve had tankless and now have a rheem heat pump water heater. The rheem uses far less energy (~60 kWh/mo) then the instant water heater. Lifespan I’m not so sure about. I know depending on the water quality they can have issues. I’ve seen many tank water heaters still working after 30 years with little to no service.

Tankless are smaller and it’s true they won’t run out of hot water so they do have that going for them.

conk··on The Electrification of Everything
I’m curious why your preference is for tankless?
conk··on Peloton to invest $400M to build its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Ohio
I’m surprised they don’t already have a North America facility for final assembly. The idea of shipping finishes treadmills and exercise bikes just seems impractical and expensive.
conk··on Tim Cook’s Fortnite trial testimony was unexpectedly revealing
If a user chooses to sign up using Apple’s SSO, how are they supposed to also use your desktop or other apps if those don’t also support Apple SSO?
conk··on I have a lot to say about Signal’s Cellebrite hack
Also not the same thing because the law also considers the harm caused to innocent 3rd parties from booby traps. No firefighter or EMT is gonna be harmed by the Signal code designed to break the cellebrite device.
conk··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
6 months ago there wasn’t a vaccine.
conk··on YouTube is now building its own video-transcoding chips
I don’t think YouTube cares if you use hardware of software decoding. I also don’t think they care if you use their hardware decoder or someone else’s. The issue with roku is they don’t want to include any extra hardware to support vp9, and they use such cheap/low spec hardware they can’t reliably decode in software.
conk··on How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare?
Would a solar flare induce enough current/voltage on these cable to actually cause a problem? Also by their nature of being under an ocean of conductive salt water wouldn’t there be some form of grounding providing protection?
conk··on Declassified spacecrafts and orbital weapons of the USSR (2018)
Maybe we just haven’t hit the “finish line” yet with the arms race...
conk··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
You would need the generator to provide about 100 watts to run the electronics and blower. Something passive like a thermoelectric generator would require a large amount of surface area to get this much power. Something more active like a traditional generator would require significant maintenance. If you’re really concerned your best bet is to get a couple Powerwalls and limit what you run off them. You could go a week running just the furnace and charging cellphones.
conk··on Ercot nearly at capacity for Texas power grid
Heating the blades would be nearly impossible with any significant wind chill. I imagine anyplace that has wind turbines is going to have significant wind chill.
conk··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
The value is great for casual gamers, no expensive hardware, no updates to install, just sit down and play a game. The only downside I’ve experienced is the limited catalogue of games.
conk··on Build a Raspberry Pi CM4 4-Bay NAS with Wiretrustee Carrier Board
802.3bt can provide higher power, easily enough to run a few HDDs but there are few switches on the market that offer 802.3bt. Almost nothing available for the residential/consumer space.
