I pay taxes in the US and I am not allowed to vote, so the phrase applies specially to me and 25% of the California population.

conanbatt··on Disney begins laying off 7k employees
> It's got nothing on Turning Red [1], though. $20M on a $175M budget. Whoof.

Turning Red was surely a hit on Disney+. Hard to see from the consumer side what the impact was, but disney+ is a money machine and the can easily double the price.

conanbatt··on America’s online privacy problems are much bigger than TikTok
Probably so, but while you are thinking of those details, a country that sends people to gulags and internment camps is collecting data at scale of important people, their families and the people that work around them.

I personally struggle understanding adults installing this app at all, and the fact that it targets mostly oblivious youngsters is pervasive.

conanbatt··on Remote work is starting to hit office rents
If anything it increases company profits, why would companies give the rent money back to employees?

It cuts both ways. What about the homeless person dying in the cold because he can't afford shelter due to sky high building requirements - is that included in the building code enforcement rules?

conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin
Sounds great. I have a business proposition for you.

I will pay you 1000 dollars for the right of taking every single asset you have if at any point it is proven you haven't paid all your corresponding taxes.

This is free money for you and your sense of justice. I can send a contract as soon as today.

conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin

conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin
It makes the whole difference. the harder it is to do, the less they do it. If not, why would they care?
conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin
That's what the people collecting the taxes want you to believe.
conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin
Because it doesn't get reported as income, there's no record of it. Thats why central banks are purposefully hindering it - it takes away their capacity to confiscate and control with it.

The capacity to not pay taxes is a very important tool of civil disobedience, just like protesting in a public street.

conanbatt··on Cash only in Berlin
That is the best reason to use cash. Isn't it scary that debit money guarantees you pay more taxes, and it is also used as evidence against you, and to violate your privacy?

Cash doesn't have any of those issues, its amazing. That's why governments hate it! (literally!)

conanbatt··on Wells Fargo to pay $3.7B for mistreating customers
If they did not get the money into their treasuries, they would not have incentives to do this at all.

This very same thing happens with the SEC - they just keep the fines. How do people not think this is robbery is beyond me.

conanbatt··on Amazon Ring cameras used in nationwide ‘swatting’ spree, US Justice Dept. says
Some politicians have staked themselves on this issue publicly. Can't recall the name, but a GOP candidate explicitly said that he would shoot the police if the entered with a no-knock warrant into his home.

One challenge is that citizens side with the police in court.
