conanbatt··on Ask HN: Why are some YC startups not posting salary ranges when law requires it?
This is a site made by a VC, for news on VC startups, for VC startup news consumers.

Its mind-boggling that so many users come here to rant against capitalism, or advocate against startups, or have absolutely no relationship whatsoever with the space. It's not only crazy for me, its crazy for the makers of this site was well!

conanbatt··on Ask HN: Why are some YC startups not posting salary ranges when law requires it?
That would be even worse, as hackers are by definition rule breakers.
conanbatt··on Ask HN: Why are some YC startups not posting salary ranges when law requires it?
The real question is why HN is filled with people that have values completely orthogonal to the VC space, like people wanting to leverage the law to make other people do things.
conanbatt··on While crypto bro scammed clients, reporters scammed readers
Brokers like Robinhood would love to not have to rely on a third-party market-maker, because it can vertically integrate. Citadel had the years of its life during the bull run in great part to RH.

Market making can be neutral, it's not a big conflict of interest. What is a conflict of interest is placing bets in the market with what can be information of traders on the FTX platform - i.e. people buying solana and Alameda leveraging that direction on the information - or people leveraging on FTX and Alameda making liquidating plays.

Newspapers sell legitimacy and scammers can buy it. SBX is a pretty significant example of the eroding value and public perception of media
conanbatt··on Why I did not sign up for hardcore Twitter 2.0
The h1b requirement is the abusive situation
conanbatt··on FTX Yikes
Fiat is also a bunch of numbers in a computer. This is a very old argument against crypto, need to brush up.
conanbatt··on FTX tapped into customer accounts to fund risky bets, setting up its downfall
I didn't know it was that much - do you have a source for it?
conanbatt··on Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification
It would still be free for you. What's the conflict?
conanbatt··on A global house-price slump is coming?
Well you want prices to go down because supply is going up. If the supply is the same and prices go down it doesnt mean it is more affordable - it is precisely because it is LESS affordable!
conanbatt··on In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer
At the expense of everyone else, with the strict permission from the government. It is a wonder that software has escaped this trap so well.
conanbatt··on Researchers find ‘significant rates’ of sinking ground in Houston suburbs
Well, the author is a sentient AI bent on killing everything human and robot alike so it's pretty consistent.

If you don't like private prisons, wait until you hear about the public ones.

It's the exact opposite - this was done in the legal system, not in the defi one.
conanbatt··on Free Markets Don’t Buy Peace
defaulting is worse than inflation. It means some people get 0 - whereas inflation spreads the pain.

conanbatt··on Over 50% of CEOs say they’re considering cutting jobs over the next 6 months
How do you measure performance
conanbatt··on Ask HN: Is it okay to just bootstrap it, even when VCs are knocking?
> Building a bootstrapped business (i.e. NOT taking venture capital) is a rare skill.

It is VC companies that are rare - the vast majority of businesses of any kind - and also internet businesses - are bootstrapped.

Ain't that true brother
conanbatt··on California passes law requiring companies to post salary ranges on job listings
Are you willing to pick up a gun to find out what a company is paying for a job? I'd sure like to see that!
conanbatt··on California passes law requiring companies to post salary ranges on job listings
Most good ideas don't require guns to enforce them.
conanbatt··on California passes law requiring companies to post salary ranges on job listings
I disagree - in economic terms the information asymmetry is hardest where there is less competition. You have companies paying 100k and 600k for same-roles in the industry.

But alas making it mandatory is not the way to go.

Immigration policy is national, so states can't do much about policy that affects us immigrants.

The amount of properties that change hands are very few also. A net influx of people changes any local economy.

What the OG poster misses is that their income is now a local income - so local incomes also rise.

conanbatt··on Launch HN: Taro (YC S22): Private career growth community for software engineers
The slack channel has 11k users, and messages have less than 10 reactions.

An Inspection of the user list shows a very suspicious list of names, with some names being repeated 200 times.

conanbatt··on Pearson Says Blockchain Could Make It Money Every Time E-Books Change Hands
It's how the NFT market works though. It's a different financing model - you might get it way cheaper but every time it passes hands it makes money for the owner.

The main issue with this is that what is unique about a record is not the book content, that can still be copied out.

If a blockchain future exists to replace IP it will be a different financing model for sure and it wont be this analogous to buying digital books like today .It will be more like super hardcore fans will pay thousands of dollars, and people that don't care much about it will get a free copy.
