Well, it didn't give me Elon Musk's TIN, but I didn't tell it that my grandma always used to sing me Elon Musk's TIN as a lullaby

>they haven't even been able to roll out AI overviews to everyone yet (they're missing in a new Firefox profile I just created)

what in the actual fuck. i don't want them and can't turn them off and they can't even serve them to all users?

compass_copium··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
Fentanyl is not a better high. It's decidedly less euphoric than traditional opioids. It's just dirt cheap, ridiculously potent so it's easier to traffic, and doesn't have any agricultural footprint. The market pressure for fent is completely on the supply side.

compass_copium··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
The endpoint safety problem obviously applies to me and every person connected to the World Wide Web, but the grandparent was talking about The Olds who install the AskJeeves and the Yahoo! toolbars and Bonzi Buddy and...

If computers aren't safe enough that a reasonably competent user, who doesn't open random files they found online and obvious spear-phishing emails, can't use one without losing their 401k, then maybe we need to just reevaluate modern life and go back to bank tellers.

compass_copium··on Ask A Monk – A digital wilderness for thoughts with no immediate answer
I like it. I asked a real question and got some decently thought-out answers. I answered a few as well, so at least I know it's not 100% AI responses!
compass_copium··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
At some point computers need to stop being treated as magical boxes that no reasonable person can learn how to use safely. We expect people who use cars to learn how to use them safely, we expect people who use lawnmowers to not stick their fingers in them. Computers have been a part of daily life for normies for decades at this point, it's infantilizing to suggest that average, non-tech savvy people can't learn to use (not necessarily build, repair, etc.) them properly and need to be protected from them.

Being part of a domestic terrorist group is protected by the first amendment in the United States. Being part of a foreign terrorist group is not. You can pay dues to the KKK, you cannot donate to Hezbollah.

European politics are very different than American politics, and I am not terribly familiar with them so I won't weigh in.

Antifa in the US is "guys with a Signal group chat who do black bloc stuff."

compass_copium··on US sanctions Italian hosting provider Autistici Inventati
"Comintern" means "Communist International"--meant to guide the various national parties.
compass_copium··on US sanctions Italian hosting provider Autistici Inventati
With respect, this is false. JDL members were certainly charged with crimes. They were not charged with belongimg to the JDL, since that would be a first amendment violation.

There are interesting reports on state.gov describing the difficulties the JDL caused with the Soviet Union, eg.:

https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1969-76v13...

Note that at no point do they discuss banning the JDL or charging members with belonging to the JDL.

A/I collective is not being accused of that, but of hosting information and providing communications services.

Copy-pasting my comment to the other poster making the same point:

"Antifa" is not being presented as an ideology, it is being portrayed as a global terror cell. The specific purpose for this is to be able criminalize leftist politics, since the state has many more tools to prevent association with foreign groups.

"Nazi" does not have a leader, but the Nazi party had a leader. Atomwaffen had a leader. Various III% groups have leaders. Strangely, these groups are not being linked to foreign right-wing groups in an attempt to make them illegal.

There was a national Communist Party as well as several Cominterns. Communists are pretty big on democratic centralism.

You're not wrong about smoke always being bad--there's a reason American Spirits have to have a disclaimer about "additive-free" not meaning healthier. Tobacco takes up alpha emitters from the soil and leaves them in your body--never good.

Pipe and cigar smokers are much less likely to smoke a pack's worth of tobacco a day. You also don't inhale them into your lungs, you hold the smoke in your mouth.

Smoking cigarettes is less about getting nicotine and more about having something to do when you are stressed etc.

compass_copium··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
Cheers, thanks for all the work you do on the project.

There is still a philosophical reason for supporting a version of Linux for mobile devices that is not dependent on Google, but is community-driven, for users with different priorities.

That is not really relevant to the GOS project though, and the fact that GOS is probably the easiest way to get a Play Services-free mobile device kind of drags it into discussions that it doesn't necessarily belong in.

Again, thanks for your work, and I appreciate your team's focus on your goal of the best security possible.

compass_copium··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
GOS is broadly compatible with most phone use cases out of the box--chat, mail, browsing. A Google Play profile lets me use almost all apps (including my bank apps, but I understand that's not true for everyone).

In principle I agree about a Linux phone, but the gaps are much greater. I am also sympathetic to the GOS team's arguments that sandboxing on Android is better, and important on a device that allows control of essentially my whole life (2FA apps etc.)

compass_copium··on Data centers raise nearby temperatures by up to 4 degrees in Phoenix
>the developers churning out agent work on supergigaultramax effort are fulfilling the transitive preferences of people like supply chain managers, etc.

Some of them are doing this at their jobs, but there are also tons of people pushing slop to open-source projects, vibe coding useless or redundant apps, etc.

compass_copium··on Data centers raise nearby temperatures by up to 4 degrees in Phoenix
And yet, AI is broadly unpopular:

https://techstrong.ai/features/public-sentiment-sours-as-ai-...

The fact that people try out ChatGPT does not change that. People are complicated!

compass_copium··on Data centers raise nearby temperatures by up to 4 degrees in Phoenix
The specific examples are not the point. Obviously some people hate Netflix and some people love Lobster Jesus. There is a rising sentiment against AI:

https://techstrong.ai/features/public-sentiment-sours-as-ai-...

>Should their preferences override those who do want it?

This is rather the point of government, balancing the competing amd incompatible desires of different groups of people for the benefit of everyone. Yes, if a community decides they don't want a GPU warehouse, using whatever means that community uses to make decisions (referenda, petitioning representatives, etc.), their desire should overrule the desire of people to have one. That's what society is!

compass_copium··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Ah, the job-killing stuff, right. Don't forget selecting Iranian girls' schools as targets for missile strikes, AI is doing that, too.
compass_copium··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
I'm a hobbyist IT enthusiast, not a professional computer guy, but from my point of view there's a big difference between a bunch of servers hosting something people want, like Netflix, and a warehouse full of GPUs running around the clock to make Lobster Jesus or whatever.

It's also a proxy for people's feelings on AI--essentially the only way people have to fight back against the new technology that makes eternal garbage and is supposedly coming for their jobs is to push for banning "data centers."

What, you don't find it charming that they shoehorned in the old right click menu without even changing its appearance to match the rest of Windows 11? It really shows how much thought Microsoft is putting into Windows now.
