column··on Tesla delays Cybertruck's range extender, reduces its range
Range extender's range extender when ?
column··on NASA is selling a brand-new Moon rover: Never used, one previous owner
Stocks are ownership in a company, they provide you info disclosed to shareholders, possibly voting rights, and dividends. It's not like the rover provides a passive income.
column··on The port of the Windows 95 Start Menu was not all it seemed
haters gonna hate...
column··on LivePortrait: A fast, controllable portrait animation model
There's a typo right at the beginning of your paper's page: exsiting
column··on MeshAnything – Converts 3D representations into efficient 3D meshes
I didn't find a way to download the mesh once generated. Is that option not available at all?
column··on AI Detectors Get It Wrong. Writers Are Being Fired Anyway
google docs already logs every keystroke
column··on YouTube videos are skipping to the end for users with adblockers
bait and switch, you let the users get used to the service without ads and find value then slam the ban hammer to make the whales switch to premium
column··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
If it's a sequel and Brad Pitt was in the first movie and you use trickery to make people think he's in the second movie, there's a case. See Crispin Glover, the dad from Back to the future, which was NOT the upside-down dad in BTTF2. They settled for 760k USD.
column··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
It's not a question of owning all voices that sound like her, it's a question of "are customers deceived into thinking it is her" and "does it affect SJ negatively to be associated with this sound alike" when her income comes partly from her distinctive voice (much like Morgan Freeman). Sam Altman tweeting "Her" right before the announcements is what builds the case for SJ.

Imagine we hired a Leo Messi look alike and made him play football badly or something worse, if viewers can clearly tell it's not him it falls under parody but if we use camera trickery to keep a fooling doubt, we could be in legal trouble.

column··on Windows 10 wallpaper was physically built and photographed (2015)
This is such an ignorant take. The default wallpaper is seen by millions if not billions of people. Many never change it. It's an important part of the branding. The total cost of the shoot, including equipment, salaries, the studio, etc. is NOTHING to Microsoft and its marketing budget. It's not like they had to prioritize this over anything else, they are printing money left and right, they are a trillion dollar company and the default wallpaper is a key aspect of how people see their core product, Windows. It would be disastrous of them to ship with a sub-par wallpaper and in what world would the money "saved" would make a difference to "build a better product"?
column··on Parler-TTS: Natural language guidance of high-fidelity TTS
I've tried it on my laptop and it is about as slow/fast as xtts. But as far as I can there's no way of keeping a consistent voice from generation to generation. If so, I don't really get the appeal. If there was a way to get consistent, then that's great for NPCs.
column··on Mistral AI Launches New 8x22B MOE Model
For anybody else not in the know : "Contra proferentem is a legal principle that suggests when there is ambiguity in the terms of a contract, the ambiguity should be resolved against the party that drafted the contract."
column··on OpenAI transcribed over a million hours of YouTube videos to train GPT-4
Microsoft says they don't train on Office 365 customer data. Maybe you don't believe them, but that's what they say.
column··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
When you pay for a service, public or private, you are still dealing with humans that are not your slaves. So be kind and you'll get a better time or be entitled and you'll go to the bottom of the pile.
column··on LLaMA now goes faster on CPUs
Unfortunately BitDefender (corporate) blocks llamafile as a ransomware "atc.heur.crypt" and it seems there is no workaround. :(
column··on AI Beats Multiple Records in Trackmania
If you are a customer of kagi.com, I found their summarizer to be a real time saver.
column··on Kagi Sidekick (alpha)
just "decimal" works too
column··on Show HN: WhisperFusion – Low-latency conversations with an AI chatbot
Automatically take a screenshot and feed it to https://github.com/vikhyat/moondream or similar? Doable. But while very impressive, the results are a bit of mixed bag (some hallucinations)
column··on Eagle 7B: Soaring past Transformers
it seems it does not support CPU only
column··on Self-rewarding-lm-PyTorch: Self-Rewarding Language Model from MetaAI
I kind of disagree. It's not "user friendly" but it is very descriptive. They are codenames afterall. Take "dolphin-2.6-mistral-7b-dpo-laser" for instance : with a little LLM background knowledge, just from the name you know it is a 7 billion parameters model based on Mistral, with a filtered dataset to remove alignment and bias (dolphin), version 2.6 and using the techniques described in the Direct Preference Optimization (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2305.18290.pdf) and Laser (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2312.13558.pdf) papers to improve its output.
column··on What has a 1 in a million chance? (2010)
What do you mean, "that's *probably* impossible" to make 6 babies from the same mother in a single year? Takes about 9 months to output a human, you know?
column··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
140 USD for a gimmick case? waaay overpriced
column··on Pushing ChatGPT's Structured Data Support to Its Limits
What are your findings?
column··on Mixtral of experts
That's twice the average salary of an experienced "regular" software developer in France.
column··on Llamafile lets you distribute and run LLMs with a single file
This is for convenience. You can also download a 4.45Mb executable (llamafile-server-0.1) and pass any GGUF model as an argument.

> llamafile-server-0.1 -m llama-2-13b.Q8_0.gguf

https://github.com/Mozilla-Ocho/llamafile/releases/tag/0.1

column··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
"especially prior to an election cycle"

It looks like you are referring to the USA elections.

1. humanity != USA

2. USA are in a constant election cycle

3. there are always elections coming around the world, so it's never a good time

column··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT Down? It's not even allowing me to login
You can always check https://status.openai.com/ Anyway it works OK here
column··on Bard Extensions
3.5 is a weak model that is only good at informal conversation. When people talk about using ChatGPT and its potential (programming, vision, etc.) they talk about GPT-4. If you don't want to pay, you should use Bing Chat for your comparison. 3.5 would not be worth $20 a month but GPT-4 is.
column··on Show HN: YouTube's killing adblockers, so we made an undetectable one
no source code = no download.
column··on LLMs by Hallucination Rate
Pardon my French but this is the exact same of bullshit pseudo-philosophical semantic non-arguments we hear from jordan peterson (please watch the Some More News video about him). "What even are words?"
