colourgarden··on Why have there been so many own goals at the Euros?
Less rest between seasons due to COVID.

For example, the English Premier League this year finished on 23rd May and starts again on 13th August (82 days rest). Last year, teams played 9-10 games between the COVID resumption on 19th June and league finish on 26th July. There were then just 48 days rest until the next season started on 12th September 2020.

The continental competitions (Champions League and Europa League) were also played during August 2020 meaning many players at top clubs had next to zero break between the two seasons. This has all had a knock-on effect to this tournament. I'm actually surprised there haven't been more injuries.

P.s. Small nitpick but the "European Cup" is the aforementioned Champions League trophy which is contested by the top club teams in Europe. The current international tournament is the European Championships or Euros.

colourgarden··on Why have there been so many own goals at the Euros?
Yes. I've seen it happen a few times before but this is now the directive (and a very positive one, in my opinion).
colourgarden··on GitHub – nushell/nushell: A new type of shell
The title is somewhat misleading and makes it seem like this is a GitHub company initiative rather than a project just hosted on GitHub.

I've not seen this title format on HN before. Could it be changed?

colourgarden··on EU citizens arriving in UK being locked up and expelled
> Labour neither opposed Brexit nor advocated for a second referendum during the 2019 GE campaign though.

Yes they did. From their party manifesto[1]:

> Within three months of coming to power, a Labour government will secure a sensible deal. And within six months, we will put that deal to a public vote alongside the option to remain.

Large numbers of voters switched from Labour to Conservative because of Brexit. It's probably fair to count all Labour voters from that election as "not in favour of Brexit".

colourgarden··on EU citizens arriving in UK being locked up and expelled
In the 2019 election, more people voted for the parties opposed to Brexit or advocating a second referendum than for pro Brexit parties.

CON, DUP: 44.4%

LAB, LIB, SNP, GRN, CYM: 50.7%

Brexit is now done so last week's local elections can't be used as a point of reference on that subject.

colourgarden··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
One thing I rarely see mentioned in discussions about Tailwind is inheritance - one of CSS's biggest strengths but also biggest weaknesses. With Tailwind, you never even have to think about inheritance ever again! No class can ever be accidentally overridden by another added elsewhere. This is a huge win for stability when working in bigger teams.

Sure, scoped CSS also handles this but most developers are not building JavaScript SPAs. They're building monolith applications or WordPress/Magento/Craft/whatever themes where a handful of stylesheets are included via a <link> tag.

colourgarden··on jQuery 3.6.0
Your use of the word "still" is a little misleading. IE _was_ the default email rendering engine until 2007 when Microsoft made the inexplicable decision to move to Word 2007 instead.
colourgarden··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
Since 2013 although I don't know if Santander was in it from the start. I'd guess yes.
colourgarden··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
Did you close the account manually or via the Switch Guarantee service? https://www.currentaccountswitch.co.uk

If signed up to the scheme (most are, including Santander), your old bank is responsible for passing on any deposits directly to your new bank account and the new bank is responsible for processing any transactions made using your old details. This carries on for, I believe 12 months.

I found the Switch Guarantee service to be excellent and believe it's a significant driver of innovation and competition in UK banking (which is far ahead of many other European countries in my experience).

My payees from my old bank were even transferred over to my new one.

(Current account = checking account to any non-UK readers.)

colourgarden··on All DuckDuckGo bang operators on one page
One small annoyance is that bangs can be set with the exclamation mark _after_ the term, however, only if that bang (with exclamation at the end) was explicitly submitted.

For many of my regulars, both exist (!w & w!, !gmaps & gmaps!) but as this isn't standard, it can lead to holes. For example, !hackernews works but hackernews! not.

It would be great if all bangs could have both variants as standard rather than allowing submission of one but not the other.

colourgarden··on On not choosing WordPress for the W3C redesign project
For reference, here's the list of CMS requirements put together by the team - https://w3c.studio24.net/docs/cms-strategy-and-requirements/
colourgarden··on On not choosing WordPress for the W3C redesign project
One important point tucked away here that is getting missed:

> Another major factor in the decision to remove WordPress from consideration was that they found “no elegant solution to content localization and translation.”

To restate - WordPress does not support multiple languages by default. And anyone who has built a multi-language WP site with one of the popular plugins (WPML, Polylang) can attest that it's a pretty terrible editorial experience.

Craft, for example, has (very good) multi-language support out-of-the-box.

Studio24 and W3C probably should have pushed that point rather than accessibility concerns.

Could you give a summary of how Bill Gates is viewed by "the average American"?

As a Brit, I think he's just viewed as "the rich computer guy". It's hard to fathom that people think he's involved with political topics.

colourgarden··on PR won't be merged because the contributor is an Israeli
Maybe, maybe not.

My immediate reaction was that I was about to read some scandalous anti-semitism (as I'm sure you did too). The truth is a little more bureaucratic with no malice or discrimination from either contributor (I won't comment on the law itself!).

The title is a little click-baity but I'm not sure how it could be more accurate?

colourgarden··on New.css – A classless CSS framework to write modern websites using only HTML
This seems like a decent boilerplate+extras but line 1 is importing a custom font. Why?

Unnecessarily opinionated and against the "lightweight" aims of this library (not knocking Inter btw - it's awesome).
