collegeburner··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
"ghost sim" damn they really sold y'all that koolaid huh? in America anyone can go buy an el cheapo prepaid sim at a gas station with no ID, in cash, and it's not a "ghost sim" it's just a prepaid phone (or a burner if you're fearmongering). i hate terms like this that beg the question that the default state is the government knowing who you are and anything else is a "ghost" sim/gun/whatever and is "dangerous".

damn, i'm really sorry for y'all, that's authoritarian ash ngl. i hope y'all's laws get fixed and thanks for calling out schumer and cornyn.
collegeburner··on Google is shutting down Stadia
i can confirm that this kept at least a few teams i've talked to or worked with from choosing flutter. facebook and react native are viewed as much safer from the "killed by google" effect. same thing tossing around the idea of using carbon, their new language.

in America i usually prove identity for postpaid services with something like a utility bill which is at least not a government id document. i understand a telco wants some identity before extending credit for any postpaid plan but can y'all not do the same?
collegeburner··on Norman Rockwell and the golden age of classic food illustration (2019)
those look more like deepfried memes than norman rockwell ngl
collegeburner··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
wait y'all can't get burner phones in aus? how do y'all make private phone calls or send private text messages if you can't dispose of the number after?
collegeburner··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
i assume for people buying prepaid roaming sims or whatever there's no personal data? or is this not the case?
collegeburner··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
why in the world did a telco need your drivers license in the first place? i assume you don't have to be a licensed driver to get phone service in australia.

edit: hn is rate limiting me but like, any phone number? you need id even for a prepaid one? and why do they need to keep this on file?

collegeburner··on Turnstile: privacy-preserving alternative to CAPTCHA by Cloudflare
you're replying to one of the earlier large adopters of hcaptcha. fact remains, its marketshare is still a lot smaller.
collegeburner··on Ken Thompson really did launch his "trusting trust" trojan attack in real life
even for us youngsters thats still considered pretty weird and nobody normal is involved with it. unfortunately, it seems like it has a tendency to pollute technical circles since when i run across it it's usually there.
collegeburner··on The anatomy of an ML-powered stock picking engine
no one said it would be fast but plenty of people on here know how to talk to allocators and have helped raise before.
collegeburner··on The anatomy of an ML-powered stock picking engine
facts, the people i know who started funds in the past few years gave no ownership. they alsp made the numbers work down starting at about $75mm iirc, tho it's a lot easier once past $500mm.
collegeburner··on How one of America’s last piano manufacturers stays alive
facts, my home piano is probably half that and it's still my go-to for just sitting and playing.
collegeburner··on How one of America’s last piano manufacturers stays alive
well yeah, uprights weren't built for the best sound. if you ask me, the order is mid sample < mid upright < good sample < good piano. i use keyscape, one of the better synth pianos with a massive ass sample library. i also own a 20s mason & hamlin, and there are absolutely differences.

i don't bother micing up my piano if i'm recording something electronic, but the difference is absolutely there especially for classical performances where dynamics are super important. for fun, me and a couple buddies recorded on a real c7 and keyscape's, same thing, and we all preferred the real mccoy blind tested every time.

collegeburner··on How one of America’s last piano manufacturers stays alive
yeah, the last person i knew who tuned by ear died probably 5 or 6 years ago now and i haven't found anyone who hits the same sound. the same electronic cut-and-paste approach does not seem to be quite as good across every single piano. don't get me wrong, it's very good, just tiny differences spotted because i knew the piano's sound when tuned by ear very well beforehand.
collegeburner··on How to 3D-print one of the strongest stainless steels
They make guns quieter and reduce recoil. All around more pleasant to shoot and reduce hearing damage. Guns are loud enough that exposure to even a few rounds in close quarters can cause hearing damage so suppressors should be in regular use as safety devices. They don't make guns safe without earpro, they don't make them silent, they don't even make them that quiet. You will still know if one goes off nearby. This is one of the things about hollywood that pisses off everyone who knows squat about guns, and why we try to refer to them as suppressors rather than "silencers".
collegeburner··on How to 3D-print one of the strongest stainless steels
California, a state known for regulations that ostensibly promote safety, has banned safety devices despite their already being extremely heavily regulated at the federal level.
collegeburner··on PS5 Refresh: Oberon Plus
partly because of difficulties of unified policy, partly because of energy crisis, and partly becayse braindead ECB policy it's likely the euro continues to fall. so sony is probably baking this in now.
collegeburner··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
sounds like the theory is that keeping it going over a long period of time keeps the metabolism up vs a short walk? tbh I'm skeptical, but my point is more that "go for a walk" isn't really the answer for weight loss. serious cardio (hiit appears to work well from last time i looked at literature) and some heavy lifting work way better, but it's still mostly a "calories in" problem.
collegeburner··on What Does the Post Crash VC Market Look Like?
$ and purchasing power, the economy as a whole has been contracting. like if everything is bringing in fewer $ then everything is worth less.
collegeburner··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
walks don't burn that many calories man. America has a calories-in problem not a calories-out one anyway.
collegeburner··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
if you do legs you should be done for the day... otherwise not hitting legs hard enough :)
collegeburner··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
if y'all want a little broscience: the soleus may be a good choice because advice is generally that it's best worked with sitting vs. standing calf raises. so kinda interesting that they came to this muscle in particular.
collegeburner··on Avoiding homework with code and getting caught
tbh i had online math homework years ago now like back in 5th grade. my solution was a whole lot jankier but i spent more time writing a script to store and use answers (unlimited quiz retakes go brrrr) than it would have taken me to just do the quizzes and was still happy. i ended up with this unholy thing that used a flat text file like a very ghetto database bc i didn't know shit about coding... eventually got to this thing that stored question text alphabetized line-by-line and binary-searched through so that was at least less terrible.

anyway i spent probably 10x as long on this and was happier because grinding repetitive math problems is fucking boring. so if he didn't do his math homework honestly who cares.

collegeburner··on Neutralisation of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision
ok fair answers but if you "believe they deserve humane treatment" how do you square that with pest control? is laser burning less humane than poisoning (status quo)? also it is definitely more humane for the humans (like no worries about small children licking a poisoned floorboard).
collegeburner··on What Does the Post Crash VC Market Look Like?
Well no. Valuations are based at least in part off discounted future cashflows at a very basic level. If projected cashflows drop enough due to bad economic conditions the value of everything will drop. If you think at a basic level there is less capital to return to shareholders via buybacks or dividends.

Also the fed finally stopped propping up valuations with QE, money is leaving the economy (about damn time).

FWIW VC/PE/some other private stuff isn't actually down yet at least not on paper. But this is bc they are not marked to market very often at all. The reason activity is still good is bc valuations are way down, like half in a lot of cases.

collegeburner··on What Does the Post Crash VC Market Look Like?
i don't think it's that simple. pretty much every asset class posting shitty returns this year, hell even bonds are in a bear market. so institutionals are gonna look at other managers and see a bunch of red and not necessarily stop alt allocations.

it's also relevant that you can't just ask for capital back as an LP. it's committed to a fund. you can not commit to another one but the price of much greater returns in alt assets is much lower liquidity.

collegeburner··on Neutralisation of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision
i mean sure the regulators don't like it but they're probably also working with the people running surveillance drones. i have no ethical problems with shooting down or disabling surveillance drones that spy on my property. the only thing stopping me from doing it is having a means where i can achieve it and not get caught/punished.
collegeburner··on Neutralisation of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision
well since the status quo is putting poison all over a house i'd prefer this if it becomes viable. pest control roomba with a laser on top? cool asf.
collegeburner··on Neutralisation of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision
where do you work that requires ethics reviews on roaches? and where is the line for where it's considered cruel or not? tbh i have 0 issues killing bugs.

do you not believe in pest control?
