coldcode··on Wing and Walmart are bringing drone delivery to 100 new stores
How does drone delivery make any financial sense at all? It seems riskier nad less likely to work, given that people's homes (not to mention apartments) may not have any reasonable or safe delivery spots.
coldcode··on There should be no Computer Art (1971)
People have said similar things about artists throughout history. Oil Paint? Non-religious/mythical subjects? Impressionism? Fauvism? Cubism? Modern Art? Etc.

Throughout art history people have often not valued the new, but only the existing. Beaux-Arts de Paris in the late 1800's was the premiere art school in Europe training traditional artists; yet many eventually turned to impressionism, etc. and abandoned the old styles. I do "computer art" today and go in directions that are new. If all you do is what came before, everything including art will stagnate. Evolve or die is not just for biology.

coldcode··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
This was prevalent until the early 2000s, it is far less common today. Corporate discounts used to exist based on guaranteed minimum legs in some time period. This ended when airlines discovered only flying full planes made them more money, making bulk discounts more pain that they were worth.
coldcode··on LTXVideo 13B AI video generation
Every browser I tried on my Mac does not show any of the videos. You only see the top animation.

Also shown: cdn.tailwindcss.com should not be used in production. To use Tailwind CSS in production, install it as a PostCSS plugin or use the Tailwind CLI: https://tailwindcss.com/docs/installation

There are a couple of JS errors, which I presume keep the videos from appearing.

coldcode··on De minimis: US small parcels loophole closes pushing up Shein, Temu prices
Exporting to the US is 15% of Chinese exports. Even if that goes to 0% it will not devastate Chinese businesses. It will hurt some there, but if your US business imports a larger percentage of its raw materials or parts from China, you are out of business as there are few alternates. China can sell to any other country to make up some of the loss.
coldcode··on Apple App Store guidelines remove ban on encouraging external payments in US
At the risk of not piling on to the Apple dislike here, if you use a non-Apple payment system, and you have an issue, you now need to go to the specific company and payment system, you can no longer demand your money back by dealing with a single company. I presume even more scam apps will take your money and ignore your complaints; imagine trying to sue a company in some foreign country to try to get your money back if they stole it. When Apple controlled the payment system, Apple could be sued in your home country. Of course this happens on the web too, but apps on your phone very different from web apps.
coldcode··on Adobe deletes Bluesky posts after backlash
I have Photoshop, but I use Affinity Photo for 99% of what I do (make digital art, AP is used for assembly and effects). I use Photoshop for a few special effects, but often it's not worth the effort.
coldcode··on Play the Virtual Organ from Arp Schnitger
Long ago I sometimes played the organ. There is nothing more amazing than being alone in a large dark church, playing a pipe organ at full volume, feeling the vibrations. It's the original heavy metal. No other instrument can duplicate that feeling.
coldcode··on DoorDash Offering Payment Plans for Food Delivery Sparks Backlash
"I'll gladly pay you the next four Tuesdays for a hamburger today" does seem like a bad economic concept.
coldcode··on Meta must defend claim it stripped copyright info from Llama's training fodder
"Training fodder" is a new one.
coldcode··on War rooms vs. deep investigations
I've watched many war room in various employers.

At one (20 years ago), they met for six months to determine why our field offices' network connection to the home office was so pathetic and unusable. It was led by the head of networking. After all those meetings, it was decided that all 1000 independent field offices should upgrade their internet to T1 connections. It didn't help. Another six months goes by, and I hear from my connections in networking that the real problem was the head of networking had installed a half-duplex low-speed ethernet card: all 1000 office's data had been going through a pinhole. It was replaced, and suddenly everything was fine again, other than the hole in the office's pockets for an unnecessary upgrade.

No one ever mentioned it publically.

coldcode··on UK demands access to Apple users' encrypted data
Apple could start with the UK politicians' iCloud backups, I am sure there is a lot of useful compromising information in them. That might cause a change in attitude.
coldcode··on New Proofs Probe the Limits of Mathematical Truth
Math is such an interesting field. People can work for decades and not make progress, then discover something in a moment of clarity from some seemingly unrelated problem. As a programmer, I don't have that type of patience.
coldcode··on National Science Foundation freezes payments in response to executive orders
If you don't fund science, you give the world to other countries, especially China. If you only fund science that makes immediate profits, you never get them, as the foundation does not exist, and the researchers never learn enough to discover anything anyway.

Science, engineering, medicine and technology do not invent themselves. It takes people, sometimes for decades, to make it happen overnight. If you spend nothing, you get nothing. I guess nothing is now the plan.

coldcode··on NTSB forces reporters to get plane crash updates on X
Forget TikTok, I'd rather see a divestment of X.

Twitter was the best idea ever but never made sense as a business; people keep trying to use X as if it still is Twitter, but it isn't. Bluesky is nice but still too small.

coldcode··on Effective AI code suggestions: less is more
XCode's assistant AI suggestions are 99% ridiculous, often don't make sense, don't compile, or have nothing to do with my project. Every once in a while it suggests a line or so that is fine. The biggest issue is I want code completion and it appends extra items that make no sense at all, requiring that I either backspace a bunch, or have to use a mouse to pick from the menu. I haven't used Copilot or one of the others, so don't know if this is normal or Apple's is just stupid.
coldcode··on Crushing Jira tickets is a party trick, not a path to impact
I first thought the headline was about crushing Jira itself. Many days it could be very tempting.
coldcode··on Show HN: I organized Bluesky feeds by categories and growth rankings
Sadly programming topics have not gotten much traction on BlueSky. You don't even have a real category for it (just generic Technology) as it's not all that popular. Most the programming related feeds are majority zero engagement.
coldcode··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Read recently in Smithsonian about a founder in a similar situation (although I think he was still involved) who started an organization to find missing soldiers and return their bodies to relatives. Spent a lot of time and money finding MIAs lost in the Eastern theatre of war from WWII. (Dr. Patrick Scannon, Project Recover).
coldcode··on Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram
I mostly use Facebook for posting tiling/tesselation art in a moderated speciality group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/tiling) that has 72,000 people in it. There are some really nice speciality groups you don't find anywhere else. Facebook's UI is horrific for comments, I think even a bad AI design couldn't be much worse, but the comments are generally pleasant.

I check my regular facebook friends occasionally, but not very often. I ignore everything else.

coldcode··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
There's a reason why Waymo isn't offered in Buffalo.
coldcode··on How to lose a fortune with one bad click
The idea that Google would spend money to help a non-business user for anything is beyond unlikely.
coldcode··on The Rise and Fall of Ashton-Tate (2023)
I remember going to the Apple Developer's Conference in 1986 (Nob Hill Hilton I think) and seeing the A-T gang (they brought more people than anyone else) wearing matching leather jackets.
coldcode··on Ask HN: Generative AI Courses for Artists
If you make art in postcards, then maybe you will be replaced. Diffusion based AI image generation is limited to a little over 1 megapixel, or double if you use an expander, or you can infinitely grow an initial image with more of the exact same sort of thing. 1 MPx printed at 300 dpi is similar in size to a postcard. Diffusion being able to generate meaningful printed images at 50-200 Mpx is impossible. My art is made at that size (that's 7200 to 14400 pixels per side approximately @ 300 dpi). I don't use AI. I do use my own code.

Try making a Jackson Pollack using AI, AI can only effectively make objective images, given it requiring linking similar images via limited text descriptions.

Making headers for newspaper articles or blog posts on the web might be OK if you don't care much. Check out https://www.quantamagazine.org to see how real artists do things. Their header images are really imaginative given the subject matter, something AI today can't do. It might be instructive to take their articles and try to make header images for them.

If you make videos, then its 1080p which can be done by AI. But video has its own issues with video diffusion generators having limits on continuity. They are getting better, but the longer the clip, the less control you have and the longer it takes to fiddle with the prompt(s). It won't ever replace real movies unless you enjoy the SciFi channel or Sharknado. That would require an entire new kind of AI which we don't have today.

coldcode··on Geometric line-art of Wacław Szpakowski (2017)
I love this type of art. I make digital geometric art, currently complex tilings, at https://andrewwulf.com (not selling any, just showing it). Geometry and math can be very appealing to people although it’s not that popular commercially today outside of NFTs. Repetition and variation can be powerful tools in art. Wacław deserves more recognition.
coldcode··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
It has nothing to do with open source, it's about security. Installing an app with no connection to anything invites lots of people to build apps that steal your stuff (sure this app might be trustworthy, but not all). Every Mac and iOS developer has the same requirements. Installing an app with no signature is asking for people to get hacked. Do you leave your house open so that some contractor you don't know can enter your house and do whatever they please? $99 a year means Apple can trust that they at least know who the contractor is. There are people who want to steal your stuff (or your mom's) much smarter than you or I. This isn't an onerous requirement at all. I shipped my first Mac app in 1987, back then security was not an issue. It is today.
coldcode··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
MacOS refused to run the installer on Sequoia. Signing it is not all that hard.
coldcode··on Php.net Is Down
I prefer I'm a coffeepot, but for some reason, there was a 404.
coldcode··on A career-ending mistake
I never intended to have a career as a programmer. I planned to work for two years, save a bit of money, and get a PhD in Chemistry. Forty years later I retired as a programmer. Every step was something new, I had 15 different employers (plus myself for 9 years starting two little companies). There was never a plan beyond finding a better/different/less irritating job, and constantly improving what I could do. I never gave any thought to what I wanted to end my career on. It actually ended entirely as my decision, I still was at the top of my ability, and my employer was happy to pay me, but I was tired of working.

While planning might work for some people, having a more short term view can work for others. The only thing I could ever control was what I was able to do, and when I was ready to move on. There are many optimizations available to succeed in life; not all are obvious.

coldcode··on Unreal 5.5 is a big deal [video]
What are the performance requirements for all these new fancy features? What kind of systems (console, PC+video card) can actually use them at a predictable frame rate?
