colbyolson··on Anic -- Faster than C, Safer than Java, Simpler than *sh
At first glance I always think it's "simpler than shit.", but then I read the article, and no, for my poor brain it is not simpler than shit.
colbyolson··on Son, as soon as someone puts their hands on you...
> I'm not a violent person. I never have been and never will be. I do not consider it a valid way to solve problems. Reverting to our animal nature is rejecting the progress we have made in our brains overriding unproductive basic survival impulses in favour of smarter solutions.

Sometimes the only way an animal will listen is if you speak their language.

colbyolson··on Comparing Python frameworks: A simple webapp in Flask, web.py, bottle, juno ...
That would be really interesting to see the details required for each framework in comparison to each other.
colbyolson··on Why You Should Be Using Virtualisation In Your Development Environment
From the experience I've had with running Parallels and the like, I disable any sharing of drives. I dont need drag and drop files from and to each one. After disabling that, I see better performance.

Disabling options like Application sharing, Drive sharing, video card 3D support, and the like will help. If you dont need it, turn it off.

colbyolson··on Ask HN: What are you reading right now?
Love that series so much. Cant wait for the show to come out on HBO.
colbyolson··on GitHub moves to SSL, but remains Firesheepable
It's nice to see GitHub jumping to show action in regards to FireSheep and SSL security, and being able to implement something quickly.

I wish other sites were able to follow suit.

colbyolson··on The time I hacked my high school
While I approve of finding a way to get your foot in the door for lunch sales, the soon abusing of it really turned me off. Too much like politics really. Other clubs or the school itself could have used that money.
colbyolson··on Offer HN: I'll help you learn Python
I'm really bummed to have missed this opportunity. Please keep me as a reference in case someone drops out or you can take another. Many thanks.
colbyolson··on Offer HN: Help with Ruby on Rails
I'm a total Ruby/RoR newb, but is there a "right way" of doing things in terms of setting up an environment?

Much like Python and Django has virtualenv/pip?

I'm not sure if the parent link works or not, it didn't work for me.

I believe this is the article linked.

Edit: Nevermind, now it wants to work. Although I did link to the print version, incase anyone wants that instead.

colbyolson··on Ask HN: Who needs a job?
I would love to find an internship somewhere in the Bay Area, specifically San Jose if possible as that's where I live.

I'm 23, great humored, and a very quick learner. Looking for a part time internship where I can get my hands dirty in programming. I have basic experience with linux, OSX, python, and ruby. I would love to find someplace where I can contribute and learn with others.

Contact info in my profile. Lets get creative!

colbyolson··on Starcraft II launches July 27
On a side note, I'm still very much waiting on Diablo3. One day...
colbyolson··on Macbook Pro helps Core i7 hit 100 Degrees Celsius
Thought this might be an article about running Flash on OSX due to the title.
colbyolson··on Hallucinogens Have Doctors Tuning In Again
Aye, I'll fix that right now. Thanks for the heads up!
colbyolson··on Hallucinogens Have Doctors Tuning In Again
Could you expand on that? Perhaps, if you're comfortable with it, explain your experience with hallucinogens and the conclusions you came to in the end?
colbyolson··on Adobe announces Flash Player and AIR for Android
Interesting video, but why have a macbook sitting there in the interview, but never being used?

A small jab at Apple?

colbyolson··on _why the lucky stiff on The Setup
It's up for me.
colbyolson··on Akamai: World internet speed increasing except for US
And I would guess it also has reasonable/competitive pricing.
colbyolson··on Reasons to Ditch Your Digital SLR
"As a new category, the EVIL is still relatively expensive, and you’ll pay as much for a body and lens as you would for a prosumer level DSLR."

Fashion vs function, I guess.

colbyolson··on A 4 year progression of startup offices
I usually go to Deskography.com :-)
colbyolson··on A 4 year progression of startup offices
Thanks for the link, but I was talking more so about the earlier versions of their "office" and not so much about the most recent.
colbyolson··on A 4 year progression of startup offices
Neat post, but I would have loved to see full-res pics instead of the little ones. I enjoy seeing the small details in everyone's setup.
colbyolson··on Surgeon stationed in Antarctica removes his own appendix (1961)
That story still gives me the chills when he describes how he cuts into the dead flesh of his arm and the gases hiss out of the cut. Ew x 10.
colbyolson··on SSH Tunneling through web filters
I use my slice for this stuff. On a mac, just add the localhost:<someport> to the 'network preferences > SOCKS proxies' and then do:

    ssh -D <someport> user@slicehost.com
colbyolson··on Rare self-rolling giant snow balls found in UK
Gotta' love Saturdays.
colbyolson··on How Do You Look When Merging Fails
I cant find any documentation on installing CVTypes, could someone who knows some python help me out? I would love to play around with this and share it on github.
colbyolson··on Try Ruby (in your browser, now with 1.9)
Backspace works for me. Mac safari 4.0.4
colbyolson··on Best Buy Optimization Is A Big Stupid Annoying Waste Of Money
Yeah, I'm right there with you. Lookin' into Avira, as I've always recommended AVG-- but yes, I have noticed its "bloat."
colbyolson··on [dead]
Blame anon.
