cogogo··on Giving friends custom text buzzes based on Morse code
It’s a joke. Parent mentioned wife and girlfriend.
cogogo··on Giving friends custom text buzzes based on Morse code
My wife’s vibration pattern for a call is SOS in morse. No side-piece for me though. Very happily married, just know if she calls it is important.
cogogo··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
The other perk is they charge “mandatory” insurance fees. It is easy to opt out if you prove you have insurance but at least the facility I am using makes it seem like it is hard.
cogogo··on Artificial beaver dams saw juvenile coho salmon survival rates go from 8% to 60%
Busy beaver problem?
cogogo··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
It is pretty much the same. You are legally required to have the card with you at all times. The practical issues you refer to are non-trivial. Inability to travel is a non-starter for many. Think ICE will be friendly? They repeatedly show they do not care about legal technicalities.
cogogo··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
I am referring to renewals. Not initial applications.
cogogo··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
It is only a matter of time before this administration does this to green card applications and renewals too. A permanent green card is not permanent. It needs to be renewed every 10 years. I am also worried about policies eventually directed at naturalized citizens. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
cogogo··on Sun Clock
Agree. This is the first time I had thought about it this way and the clock representation seems fine.

Oddly the year is the only thing where I think I have a good 3D mental model without really thinking about it. Not sure if this makes sense to others but right now we are about 11/12ths of the way to the autumnal equinox and you can imagine the Earth’s tilted axis almost perpendicular to the arriving sunlight. I think of this as if I were observing from the sun so the axis is pointing up (north) to the left.

cogogo··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
I bought a gatorade today after a run and it was 28oz. Pretty certain the big ones were 32oz for decades. I probably think this is a better size for me but pretty clear that is not why the change was introduced.
cogogo··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
Over the years I have seen a few threads on tinnitus. I have it very mildly and doesn’t bother me much. On the other hand I have had “floaters” in my eyes since I was a teenager (probably just when I noticed them). Until I saw a doc I thought I was going blind but apparently they run in my family. They are like visual tinnitus and my god do they drive me crazy. I find wearing sunglasses helps me ignore them but they can be brutal. I am a big skier and in flat light they drive me bonkers. Not sure I have seen these discussed here but maybe I missed it.
cogogo··on Atomic Clocks
My GE microwave has a whole damn button the same size as the start button for AM/PM. Has to be one of the dumbest design wastes I have seen. I have always wished the 24 hr clock had taken off in the US. I use it on any clock that supports it.
cogogo··on 'Crush this lady': how eBay harassment campaign led to $56M payout
I adore our local boys and girls club, our kids are there every weekday and they adore it too. We have donated a little bit of money monthly for almost a decade. I do not love the big money vanity donors but they are what make the place tick.

This is another level… I would be so angry if this clown were running our metro area. I feel obligated to write letters to all of those donors even though we are on the other coast.

cogogo··on How the words we teach English language learners changed
My wife kept up her english via friends. And I am always surprised how much US cultural exports help people learn the language.

A French accent in English is easy to mock but it actually sounds pretty good. My American accent in Spanish sounds atrocious and sadly our bilingual kids have pretty American accents too. But honestly who cares?

Speaking another language is the best effort I have ever made (I am lucky not to do it out of necessity). Totally changed my world view and how I think, speak, read and dream. Though please do not make me listen to a recording of my own voice…

cogogo··on BMW Is Showing Commercials on Their Car's Dash Screens as a Treat
I have always been worried about self driving cars (even privately owned) being ad platforms. Guess we are getting there faster! Slate auto is not open source but at least they have no screens and I believe no driver tracking.
cogogo··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
This is hilarious in that many very rich people pay zero income tax today. In this system “all of a sudden” all these people would be paying taxes on exactly 500k. Near zero for them anyway but with an explicit albeit BS claim of funding the majority of government expense. From a bit of quick research the top 1% of earners are about 40% of the tax base.

Everyone gets screwed in this system but especially those paying a good amount of taxes and getting fewer votes like the 200-400k range. Or maybe not especially. This just an outright terrible idea.

cogogo··on What happened to TheNumbers.com
I think I probably use AI like a lot of consumers out there. Search engines have gotten bad and AI really good at answering fairly specific questions. Often pointing at sites like wikipedia. Pretty clear changing my behavior will have zero impact but it is certainly part of the problem. Feels a lot like my CO2 consumption.

*Edit - CO2 creation

cogogo··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
I just run the server off of the fastest laptop and one of them also uses that machine to play and lock it all down with tailscale. Honestly probably not worth the effort when the java edition allows them to play together over the wifi network out of the box. Have not found a solution I like to open up to other kids at school.
cogogo··on Interview with Mitchell Hashimoto about Ghostty and Zig
The year is 2026 and the only thing about coding that matters anymore is taste.

Edit: Thought about scare quoting “taste”

cogogo··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
Off topic but I went to a local town’s medium-sized professional fireworks show this weekend and there were none of those small flash really loud fireworks that shake you to the core. Not even in the grand finale. Oddly they are what I enjoy most. Have they gone out of fashion or do they mess too much with pets?
cogogo··on Ship traces journey Spanish Armada sailors made in 1588
That wikipedia article is pretty clear that it is a myth and there is no genetic evidence of shipwrecked Spanish sailors having children.
cogogo··on Calvin and Hobbes and the price of integrity
Great piece but definitely makes me even more annoyed by the obviously bootleg Calvin pissing stickers on pickups. And even further annoyed that my kids will never know the joy of a quality broadsheet newspaper, especially on Sunday.
cogogo··on Waymo Premier
Me too but this feels like a step in a progression to being able to rent/share them.
cogogo··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
> If you don't personally find straws useful that's fine but why should something like that be dictated for everyone else let alone at such a high level of government and without a direct vote by the citizens?

That is cleary advocating for something as small straws being worthy of a direct vote.

Is there a reasonable expectation for government to be mathematically optimal in any possible way? Why should I not confuse your example as an example?

cogogo··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
Is that really a perfect example of a government failing to function well? In what country government does every action require a direct vote? Representative democracy is by definition imperfect.

Bet you can think of a better “perfect” example of a government failing to function well. It all depends on which government you are referring to but the best example to me would probably be a government needlessly bombing another country. Not a ban on plastic straws.

cogogo··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
Have to say I love the drink cap thing. It makes a lot of sense. The caps wind up everywhere so the regulation probably/most likely does some good (have not seen any data so who knows). But once you get used to it you appreciate not being able to lose the cap. Straws seem pretty useless to me in general so why not avoid plastic? but that is probably a me problem. Plastic on fruit is annoying as hell but it is not a mutually exclusive problem.
cogogo··on Massachusetts bans sale of precise location data in new privacy rights bill
I always thought that is from companies that get their hands on registration data. Or I could be wrong and it is the dealer itself selling it on not the manufacturer.
cogogo··on Making peace with your unlived dreams (2023)
I admire the commitment. I hope you stomp it. I am 44 and have lost the resolve to try new tricks in the sports I enjoy (skiing and kitesurfing). I wish I would but at the same time the downside risk is so high as a parent of 3 kids. Then I relax and take comfort in just straight up sending what I do know. And that is a privilege I hope to enjoy for as long as possible.
cogogo··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
Frankly that is a bad comparison. Soccer is incredibly popular at a youth level. The talent pool is there and the money is there. How big is the Brazilian baseball economy? As the article states there is about $1.5bn in player value in the MLS. Not to mention that our top tier talent is usually exported to Europe where there is an order of magnitude more money available for the sport. My argument is we have a big talent pool of kids who want to be successful in soccer and we have not learned how to manage it at scale. The talent market of potential players is incredibly fragmented.

Edit: typos

cogogo··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
I think that is a contributor to the problem but the real problem is we do not yet know how to develop talent consistently in the US. FC Barcelona is easily the world reference recruiting kids around 7-8 years old and building them mentally, physically and tactically into incredible players. Something like half or more of their current roster came through la masía at some point. And something like half the Spain world cup roster plays for Barcelona.

There are soccer academies in the US but it is still relatively new and we do not have a great development model yet. Youth academies are also fairly antithetical to how talent pipelines work for the established US sports.

cogogo··on Home alone: Remote work, isolation, and mental health
It is all about control and bad leaders do not know how to lead without doing “drive bys.”
