And much of our society believes those two things. You see it every day watching people interact in public with a sense of extreme entitlement. Toxic individualism.
Our kids have been out of diapers for a couple of years. We loved these bamboo diapers[0] Nearly as good as pampers. Much softer and much better for the environment. I have no relationship to the company.
And disposables dropping at 10cents a pair. Holy crap! I thought they were expensive now.
Finally we had a crazy trustee in our condo assoc that wanted us to scrape the poop off before we threw diapers away in our community barrels (in sealed bags of course). We just smiled and nodded.
Interesting. I recently cancelled and reordered a card and I have still been able to make purchases via Amazon without ever making an update. In this case I am happy about it because I am lazy but had no idea how it was working. Presume this is what is going on.
Just recently I was in a small shop where I was surprised to see epaper tags and ended up talking to the owner about them. She said they were super flaky and would reset at random. Agter that interaction I am not at all surprised a flipper could mess with them. But I also have not seen them widespread at the physical outlets I shop at.
I know people who regularly stole this way. They would usually work in pairs and one would leave a full cart near the exit and the other would walk out confidently. Worst case they figured they would just act the fool and either leave the cart or pay. Irked me that they did this but not enough to rat. I bet these days doing that with any kind of regularity would have you starring on much higher quality film.
I was at a small conference north of San Diego and thought I could find my way back to the airport for an early flight. I did but not before making a U-turn at the Mexican border. My excuse is the darkness (and of course no gps at the time).
actually a sign of our times that we can gripe about this. i remember how annoying it was to rent a car on a business trip without anything other than a road atlas. you had to dedicate a fair bit of cognitive load you really didnt want to use.
I primarily use Apple maps and bounce back to google sometimes because I think the browser experience is so much better and it is faster to just type my terms right into ironically safari. Every time I do I think it is still simpler and snappier. Especially true if I have recently tried to use the MacOS maps app… that never behaves how I would imagine it should if I go beyond a simple location search. There are things about the ios app that make me crazy too. No qualms about the maps themselves these days.
This misalignment is especially bad at startups. In my experience security is only prioritized when driven by the customer and is largely a performative box checking exercise.
You are right. I do think it is miraculous that the trajectory happened to bring the capsule into a solar eclipse and Mercury, Mars and Saturn are positioned in this way. This site helped me understand the current/past positioning[0]. Even though there is no reason the photo has to be oriented with the planets to the right. I am still surprised at how blurry they look when zooming given what I see from Earth with binoculars. I guess they are magnifying considerably more than this lens.
In retrospect it was pretty silly to think they could have been galaxies.
Appreciate the detailed response. I think it would be a borderline miraculous photo if they are planets aligned in that way. Zooming they look more like artifacts or galaxies to me. I spend a good amount of time looking at planets from earth through binoculars and even with an atmosphere they resolve better than that.
This is terrifying. I have not used agents because I do not have a sandbox machine I do not care about. Am I crazy to worry about a sandboxed agent running on my home network? Anyone experienced anything weird by doing that?
Think this is pure piggyback marketing on what cloudflare did with next.js. In my experience a company that raised $30MM a month ago is extremely unlikely to be investing energy in cost rationalization/optimization.
edit: saw the total raise not the incremental 30MM
The thing about that is the governments who most fear the governed are often extremely draconian. I actually do not think that it is constructive and it is precisely that fear that is driving things like voter suppression in the US.
About 10 years ago I was at a startup that used one of the upstart 401k providers of the time. Logged in one day and could see several of my coworkers’ accounts. Really bad class of bug. Still not clear to me how they could have screwed up account atomicity so poorly but assume it was something to do with how they managed orgs.
I was pretty mad about it but also tried to play ball and not make too much of a fuss because I learned some pretty private things without meaning to and didn’t want to inadvertently make them public. Should have been more vocal.
Some people definitely do but how do they go and address it? A fresh example in that it addresses pure misinformation. I just screwed up and told some neighbors garbage collection was delayed for a day because of almost 2ft of snow. Turns out it was just food waste and I was distracted checking the app and read the notification poorly.
I went back to tell them (do not know them at all just everyone is chattier digging out of a storm) and they were not there. Feel terrible and no real viable remedy. Hope they check themselves and realize I am an idiot. Even harder on the internet.
I am pretty self-sufficient and had colleagues who had been in the same role for 20+yrs that I could depend on. But they were also not local. Was weird but workable. Lots of sametime.
Zero intention to speak badly of the deceased… Just an anecdote - I started at IBM in the early 2000s right out of college. At the time his immediate legacy was the divestiture of a big chunk of IBMs real estate. As a new IBMer that meant hot-desking if I went to the office and a very liberal work from home policy 20 years before its time. I love work from home but experienced first hand how hard it can be on young people. In my first professional job I maybe saw my bosses (yes plural because of org changes and the IBM matrix) twice a year.
Why is this is downvoted? What is the difference between the anger being expressed here and the anger of the original email recipient? Do I need to revisit the community guidelines? I assume this is the first time this person has seen the Rob Pike post.
It also has me musing… do they have good test coverage for their 27 debugging traps? And it must be such a headache to even functionally test your malware. What a time to be alive!
I know I shouldn’t but I find it hilarious that whoever wrote this wrote the malware so explicitly. Something about functions like exfiltrateCredentials and clear comments for the backdoor makes me chuckle. They went through all the trouble to detect debuggers and sandboxes and did not even bother to obfuscate the code.
I agree with this but I am not sure the personal risk of loss is very high with Apple. It is real but is it even on the same order of magnitude of losing your family photos in a house fire 30yrs ago? I used to keep a disk in a safe deposit box with my pics but got lazy. Is that good practice or paranoia?
That is a fast track from cars to societal collapse. But agree cars are terrifying. I live in what should be a walking friendly part of Boston that is very pedestrian unfriendly because drivers are overly aggressive, on their phones, or commuting through to avoid traffic and do not care. It is the only reason our 10 year old is not yet wandering around on his own. I have spent years writing local politicians about improved intersections and traffic enforcement and have given up. No one seems to care. The car is king in the US. Even in a corner of the country where there is a lot of room to design around them not for them.
