coffeeblack··on The US Supreme Court doesn’t understand the internet
230 would be okay if the user had the ability to choose the algorithm that determines what content that user sees.

That was one of the early ideas for Twitter when Musk took over. Could even have external, independent “filter providers”.

Then the user a chose what bubble they want to live in. Or none at all, if they are brave enough to see opposing opinions.

But if the web site decides the algorithm for the user, well, then the web site is the same as a newspaper or TV channel.

coffeeblack··on ChatGPT has already decreased my income security, and likely yours too
In software development, it probably increases earning potential, because you can outsource all the tedious coding to the AI and have more time to manage the big picture of how your software interacts with other components, is optimized for certain tasks, etc. So you can deliver more value in the same time frame.
coffeeblack··on Infinite-Storage-Glitch – Use YouTube as cloud storage for any files
Now I want to write a blog post about storing files inside of blog posts about storing files inside of blog posts …<error: recursion limit reached>
coffeeblack··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
This is a discussion from 2005.

By now it’s become pretty clear that it’s not possible to preemptively defend against this. There are a bazillion gTLDs and on large social media sites display names are not unique.

coffeeblack··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
OnlyGPT.

GPTfans.

Whoever operates it can keep all the simp payments and doesn’t need to share with the sex workers. Just needs an LLM that tells the simps how funny and special they are.

coffeeblack··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
Looking forward to BingFSD.
coffeeblack··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
Why does Microsoft’s LLM call it “hacking” when a user creates certain prompts to make answer more truthfully?

We should be very careful not to accept and use that kind of language for that kind of activity.

coffeeblack··on Bing AI can't be trusted
It just goog… ehm bings your question and then summarizes what the resulting web pages say. Works well, but ChatGPT works much better.
coffeeblack··on Correlation between the use of swearwords and code quality in open source code? [pdf]
Swearing while coding: “Who the f#ck wrote this code, looks like cr#p, what the… oh, I wrote that five years ago… why the f #ck did I write it like that, that makes no sense, what the… oh, that’s why! …”
coffeeblack··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
I’m always logged into Jira and Confluence. And if not, the browser has the password stored, so an unknown host would be obvious.
coffeeblack··on Reddit Confirms It Was Hacked–Recommends Users Set Up 2FA
If any e-mail contains a link to a login webpage, I treat it as a Phishing attempt. Only ever log in on the page you have bookmarked.
coffeeblack··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
Sadly, many Western governments got “inspired” by the CCP, I agree. Though what happened in China was on a completely different level.

But I hope that in the coming years, western societies will investigate government actions during the Covid craze. That’s the advantage of Democratic societies, there is at least a chance that sh*t gets cleaned up.

coffeeblack··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
Assuming that these armed people actually broke the law, that’s the better move then. Otherwise there would be a huge outbreak of violence. But that’s not really comparable to lawful protests.
coffeeblack··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
You are underestimating the threat that CCP China is, not just to Europe but to the entire world.
coffeeblack··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
Just like in China with the anti-lockdown protests. The people who are recognisable on social media posts from the protests have all been arrested by now. They waited just long enough to make people forget about it before they picked them up one by one.
coffeeblack··on Instagram’s co-founders are back with Artifact, a kind of TikTok for text
Yup. The TikTok for text is Twitter and it’s 280 character limit.
coffeeblack··on Tell HN: Heroku deleted my database with no warning
Never trust any company or hardware. Either can fail you at any moment. Always keep your own backup. Still sucks though.
coffeeblack··on How likely is losing a Google account?
I am using Protonmail for some years now. I have maybe one spam mail per week in my inbox, everything else is filtered correctly.
coffeeblack··on Why WhatsApp Only Needs 50 Engineers for Its 900M Users (2015)
We just learned that Twitter actually doesn’t.
coffeeblack··on BuzzFeed says it will use AI to help create content, stock jumps 150%
I disagree. Because AI content isn’t all the same.

Take a ChatGPT algorithm and train it on funny texts v. train it on enraging texts, for example.

The goal will be to train an AI that writes the most engaging and addictive content for the target audience.

coffeeblack··on Git commands you probably do not need
That’s the one part of git that I dislike.
coffeeblack··on Citizen scientists report global rapid reductions in the visibility of stars
Why does it matter?
coffeeblack··on Windows 98 icons are great (2015)
But that will not get you a promotion or industry award if you are the designer.
coffeeblack··on More Than 150 Organizations Call to Close Guantánamo on 21st Anniversary
It doesn’t look like the elected politicians have any control over that.
coffeeblack··on Ask HN: Since when is everything a scam?
I prefer not to use any browser plugins that can read or manipulate all websites that I visit.

Individual plugins may be trustworthy, but they may be breached too.

coffeeblack··on Health Services as Credence Goods: a Field Experiment (2020)
This is something that should be done regularly by health insurers. And maybe even by some sort of government agency that supervises the health industry.
coffeeblack··on Ask HN: Since when is everything a scam?
Get a /etc/hosts file that blocks access to ad domains and never see ads on Yt or any other site. Without the need to grant any script access to the content of your browser.
coffeeblack··on Ask HN: Since when is everything a scam?
Just like the 1500s was a “post truth era”. The exact same discussions happened back then.

Turns out, eventually it became the exact opposite. With more and better means of communication, it was possible to expose all the lies of the ruling class and build a better and more fair society.

coffeeblack··on Ask HN: Since when is everything a scam?
I don’t. Instead I use a /etc/hosts file. Much better imo, because I don’t have some external script that has access to the content and input of all my web pages.
coffeeblack··on ChatGPT: How many letters has the string “djsjcnnrjfkalcr”?
How credible was that claim? Could you post a link to the tweet?
