codinghorror··on Candy Japan 2017 Year in Review
There is no way they get 200-300 subscriptions from a social news story. Their own self published data does not support this.
codinghorror··on Candy Japan 2017 Year in Review
Aw that is a bummer, I subscribed in 2017 and love the Service!
codinghorror··on A criticism of Ruby (2013)
Has any of this been addressed in recent Ruby releases? The velocity of the project has improved since 2013.
codinghorror··on LG Develops ‘Nano IPS’ LCD, Unveils 32“ 4K Display with DCI-P3, HDR600, TB3
Yes, and what is that exactly? I need OLED displays.
codinghorror··on LG Develops ‘Nano IPS’ LCD, Unveils 32“ 4K Display with DCI-P3, HDR600, TB3
Where are the OLED computer displays? I no longer want any LED anything after seeing OLED in action on my TV and smartphone..
codinghorror··on Blizzard's Battle.net Updater Installs Root Certificate
Yes this, Blizzard is a very conscientious company in everything they do. I'd absolutely trust them.

(Also not sure if anti-cheat is a factor here?)

codinghorror··on When should behaviour outside a community have consequences inside it?
I suspect the answer is not, in fact, that simple.
codinghorror··on Hundreds ‘Rickrolled’ in Campus Prank at Cornell
I wish I could upvote this a million times.
codinghorror··on I wrote a script that wins the majority of HQ Trivia games
Simple basic heuristics FTW!! The dumbest thing that can work is often pretty darn good!
codinghorror··on Dynamicland
I tend to agree. Physical fetishism seems like a retreat from the core values of computing.
codinghorror··on Improving app security and performance on Google Play for years to come
Yeah this is definitely the biggest point of the article, thanks for highlighting that!
codinghorror··on Moving from Disqus to Schnack
Yes, fragmentation is a feature. Otherwise you are re-inventing Facebook, and we aren’t even sure we want the one of those we have.
codinghorror··on Facebook admits that it is a problem
This is exactly what I was thinking when reading that. It seemed odd to me that nowhere in that post was it noted that addiction to social media might be, y'know.. harmful?

That said, I do applaud the "take a break from person {x}" feature which is very thoughtful design, and something we want to add to Discourse.

codinghorror··on Introducing the GoodWatch
Oh my gosh this is amazing, such a labor of love. Everyone clearly needs a reverse engineered disassembler on their wrist.
codinghorror··on Is Spending Time on Social Media Bad for Us?
You bring up a good point: is this _addictive?_
codinghorror··on Is Spending Time on Social Media Bad for Us?
Great insight. This is also true of online discourse, though the presence of {x} voices at once can make it overwhelming.
codinghorror··on The Collapse of Complex Business Models (2010)
Man I miss the hell out of Clay Shirky writing stuff on a blog. He barely even posts on Twitter. I guess he had the book about the Chinese smartphone company in 2015

https://www.amazon.com/Little-Rice-Smartphones-Xiaomi-Chines...

.. but nothing else of note? It's hard to tell what he's up to these days, but I sorely miss his blog writing.

codinghorror··on Chatbots need a personality
“What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people.” -- oh man this is a fantastic quote. So true. AI will surely destroy humanity!
codinghorror··on Security Guidelines for Congressional Campaigns
Yeah this is a good point plus the latest iPad Pro is amazing, performance and feature wise.
codinghorror··on Security Guidelines for Congressional Campaigns
A casual read says the safest easiest setup is everyone doing all their work on a recent iPhone model. Good news is, assuming the budget requirement can be met, this is pretty close to what is already happening for most people.
codinghorror··on Security Guidelines for Congressional Campaigns
Android: unsafe at any speed, apparently.
codinghorror··on Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People
The "success at any cost" mentality may have some costs, in retrospect
codinghorror··on The Cost of JavaScript
Pay attention to how much slower all the Android devices are here, whereas iPhone has long since reached laptop parity. So depressing how bad Qualcomm hardware is.
codinghorror··on Fused Video Stabilization on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
right, that's why the (presumably) dedicated chip for post-processing is a nice value add, as my comment said..
codinghorror··on Fused Video Stabilization on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
Anyone has to be better than Qualcomm, I hope. Their performance is just embarrassing at this point, relative to where Apple is. Compare:

https://browser.geekbench.com/android-benchmarks https://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks

4214 versus 1965. And that's assuming you own the very very very latest Android device from this year. It gets far worse the deeper / older you go in years.

codinghorror··on Fused Video Stabilization on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
This -- is super freakin' cool. Real value add from Google, considering everyone is on the same very mediocre Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform. (Please PLEASE for the love of God, Google, build your own mobile SoCs so someone can remotely catch up to Apple's 3 year lead in mobile performance already)

Credible too because Pixel 2 had such stellar picture quality in the reviews.

codinghorror··on Cursive Handwriting and Other Education Myths (2016)
Oh man how I _HATED_ cursive writing. I was so bad at it, my Dad had to give me special lessons and penalties, which was an awful experience.

You know how much cursive I've written in the last 30 years? Zero. ZERO.

We will not be teaching our kids this, and I will encourage them not to learn it (unless they want to, for some odd reason).

codinghorror··on CIA created code to impersonate Kaspersky Lab: WikiLeaks
How is wikileaks a credible source these days? https://www.wired.com/2016/07/wikileaks-officially-lost-mora...
codinghorror··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
What pisses you off? What makes you angry?

Go build a startup to change that.

codinghorror··on Why we’re closing Walnut
yes Delancey Street is great. They also sell xmas trees!
