codesuela··on Conan Doyle estate seeks US copyright of Sherlock Holmes's 'complex personality'
nope, it's pretty flat (like characters in TV shows)
codesuela··on Drug addiction: The complex truth

codesuela··on Delete any Photo from Facebook by Exploiting Support Dashboard
nope, only thing this would've shown is that pictures aren't really deleted. Think about it. Facebook would do a rollback and all the pictures would be back. However with a little bad luck on their part they'd mess up which would lead to them restoring rightfully deleted pictures (many of them embarrassing). Would this have happened for sure? Probably not, but I strongly believe that this could have ended hilariously and frankly I am a little disappointed that the researcher was a white hat ;)

codesuela··on The SEC Shows Why Bitcoin Is Doomed
tl:dr

> The group of developers who came up with Bitcoin did not produce a viable replacement currency, a revolution or even a particularly wise investment opportunity. They invented a very clever peer-to-peer payment system that also happens to enable fraud, tax avoidance, drug dealing and other sordid pursuits that governments won't abide for much longer.

article is basically a smear, little to none informational content

codesuela··on DigitalOcean raises $3.2M Seed Round
"low margin" being 60-80%
codesuela··on Ask PG: Why is everybody hellbanned?
It's either that or implementing captchas. And I think pg is not very motivated to do the latter.

edit: top of my head reply/speculation so I don't claim any factual accuracy.

codesuela··on Samsung agency is buying off StackOverflow users
Hey snorkel,

> I heard the best apps will win great promotional prizes and the latest Samsung devices.

yes I heard of it too and I am going to submit an app! Wish me luck. I am submitting my battery draining app. By the way do you know how Samsung Touchwiz manages to heat up my phone? It is an awesome feature and it seems to be unique to Samsung because I could not find the function the Android SDK! Can you believe that?! Ha!

I really look forward to winning the new Galaxy Note as I compared it to a bunch of other Android phones and it seems that it not only offers the best hardware but also the biggest surface for heat dissipation. I have a cold currently and can't stop thinking about how awesome it would be if I could use my cell phone as a portable hot-water bag. That reminds me of a story about Samsung and illness: 2003 I had a heart attack. I was so shaky and panicked that instead of the emergency services I dialed the Samsung hotline. I got to speak to a support agent instantly! He calmed me down and explained to me how there is a secret resuscitation function built into my current Samsung phone then he hung up. As my heart rate came to a halt I yanked up the vibration strength in the settings menu and with his callback a powerful electric shock ran through my body giving my heart the much needed kick to start beating again.

As I thanked him he explained that this function was not openly advertised because Bill Gates had a patent on breaking bones through muscle contractions caused by an electric shock for using a Linux product. But because the implementation was too similar Samsung hid the feature.

Beat that Apple!

codesuela··on "Accidentally" Freelance
I will not comment on the very condescending generalization made by this comment. Instead I will ask this: Do you really need employees hired for a specific task to go through rigorous testing which depending on the company you are applying for offers very little real world benefit beyond satisfying HR? I can't count the number of comments here on HN where people were complaining that they didn't get the job even though passing the tech test with flying colors. Isn't it way more efficient to hand someone a real life task and see how he executes it? Also freelancers are expected to be more self reliant then employees who have an immediate superior and a more general role in the company structure.

In my experience there are two types of freelance work, one where you are basically an employee with a different contract (more money, less security). The other is where you are expected to take on as much responsibility as possible and manage yourself (I like to think of it as an one man army). I've been in both roles and neither is inherently better because if you force one role on your client, it is going to end badly and leads to dissatisfaction for both parties (been there done that, went with self reliance mode when employee mode was desired, needless to say I am now much more vigilant and make sure I know what the client wants).

I can't be really angry with the parent comment because I've seen the same kind of arrogance from contractors. The counter to his point could be that employees are afraid of performing or getting tested in the real world, hence they train for a series of theoretical interviews and whiteboard coding and once they land the job they just float along the other employees, stay low and perform as little as needed. This is not my opinion but rather what I have heard from other contractors so don't take offense. Not to mention that one shouldn't be offended by general statements because they offer a modicum of truth at best.

codesuela··on OVH launches 2.99€/mo dedicated servers (2G RAM, 500G disk)
Don't get me wrong, this is an awesome offer but because I believe that these may be not available for a long time I am currently in the check out process, ordering one of these for a year even though I don't have an immediate use.

Edit: Order placed, eagerly awaiting my Isgenug (that is what they are called for the German market) :)

codesuela··on OVH launches 2.99€/mo dedicated servers (2G RAM, 500G disk)
> The price is nothing, I still ask myself if it's rentable because "it's an Atom" and changes the power bill, or this is more a unprofitable product to attract you to other products.

pretty sure it's the latter. Even if there is minimal human effort on part of OVH involved that probably leads to unprofitability. For example a RAM stick breaks and has to be switched out, I guess it takes a systems engineer in the NOC at least 30 minutes to locate the server, disconnect it, replace the stick, mount the server again, make sure it is running fine. Assuming that employee get's paid 20 GBP, that is a 10 pound cost plus replacement RAM which is...I dont know...let's say 20 GBP, recouping that kind of money would take about a year (I know very dirty napkin calculations).

I bet they have a handful of these gimmick servers and they are going to sell out very soon. Comparable to the Raspberry Pi colocation edis offers ( http://www.edis.at/en/server/colocation/austria/raspberrypi/ ) try to order and you will find that they are sold out.

codesuela··on I'm learning to code by building 180 websites in 180 days. Today is day 115
> It's like 160 lines of code.

Which is precisely the reason why I am skeptical. I would find it more believable if she wrote 500 sloppy lines. Maybe I am a bad programmer but I often write elaborate code without much elegance and then go back and enjoy reducing the number of LOC without the code loosing expression which to me equals elegance (ie the code is still easily readable and understandable just with a lot less code so just squeezing everything in one line doesn't count). Recently I refactored a project a junior dev wrote by the factor of about 100 by rewriting it and using basic OOP (it was a copy and paste nightmare).

This piece definitely showcases Jennifers dedication and is nice self-marketing but using this as a measuring stick for newbies would be unfair and unrealistic.

edit: Upon reflecting why it strikes me as odd is that when I started out programming I focused on one website I wanted to build and kept adding features rather then building as much different stuff as possible. Hence I probably can't assess whether her accomplishments are realistic.

codesuela··on The Web’s longest nightmare ends: Eolas patents are dead on appeal
> And the crybabies that think that all they do is a unique invention and that it costs millions of dollars to write a couple of lines of code

I think that is a great point. I believe that many people think that you should get a patent for something if you thought of something first. It certainly has an appeal towards the common man if you can get rewarded for just an idea. As IT professionals we all know someone who has an idea and just needs someone to execute.

codesuela··on German discount host Hetzner launches new servers

codesuela··on Switching to DuckDuckGo and Firefox
Sentiment in the comments indicates how I feel: FirefoX is now the New Browser To use if you want privacy and security but wait there is more: the sole act of installing it is a charitable donation towards the free internet. Firefox problems aside (caugh no multiprocess execution model caugh) thats still a strong sales pitich. And that is one of the few (hip?) trends WE get to influence if not decide the choice wich Browser our close aquaintances use. And that is awesome and and i encurage everyone to excersise it. Bretheren lets turn the tide and make FF no 1 again by leading with a good example! As a long time DDG user and recently reformed ex chrome user I say: Hutzzah

PS please pardon my autocorrect

codesuela··on How to permanently delete a Facebook account
I have zero trust in Facebook and probably would not even believe them if Mark swore on his mother that they perform a proper wipe of your private data.

With that in mind you shouldn't have a hard time understanding why it sounds to me as if they delete all copies on servers in the EU but US mirrors of your profile remain untouched. How else could their algorithm deduct that your ladyfriend used to be a man without analyzing old conversations from deleted profiles. Could you live in a world where facebook sells birth controll pills to former biological males.

Ok I admit it's a hyperbole/edge case but I know that you know what I mean ;)

codesuela··on How to permanently delete a Facebook account
pretty sure this is not a real full delete. Probably just switches around the profile_status field:

0 - visible/default/active

1 - deactivated

2 - it is gone, really! I swear! crosses fingers

3 - suspended for tos abuse (we don't like you but your data might be valuable at some point)

edit: also to be fair:

4 - memorial mode

codesuela··on Leaseweb has wiped all Megaupload servers
Aren't the Leaseweb servers just a mirror of the US servers? Being an international hoster it wouldn't make much sense to host individual files on just one server.

Also while this sure sucks for people who had files hosted there what was Leaseweb supposed to do? Can't really fault them for wiping servers that nobody paid for. Also this prevents them getting dragged into any legal proceedings like when the proscuter decides he needs more data for his case.
