codefreakxff··on The level of Mac malware is not acceptable, says Apple exec at Epic trial
I’m not sure what your point is. Case details are fuzzy right now, but wasn’t Microsoft accused of anti competition practices. Things like blocking browsers or apps that competed with their apps. They had a solid lock on the desktop operating system and were actively hurting competition

Apple is not competing against Epic games here. They aren’t blocking them to force users to buy their Apple version of whatever. And the Epic games can run on tons of popular platforms.

This is really just about payment transactions? So I don’t see a comparison in any way with the facts of the Microsoft case. Other than two big companies asserting greedy rules on their platform. Is that enough for anti-trust? I can’t argue that case in a post

codefreakxff··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
I’m not sure I understand your statement that traffic is bad because housing density is too low for the population.

Certainly just increasing density with no other controls just increases traffic congestion.

The best approach would be increasing density while decreasing reliance on personal transportation.

codefreakxff··on Architecture of a desktop-like SPA
That’s a lot of words

I’m just going to say that market inefficiencies leave room for competition.

If you make a well liked app and build a new market, but it’s slow and missing features, then you leave a giant gap for someone to make a better version and steal your market

codefreakxff··on Zoom zero-day discovery
We run zoom calls with over 200 participants and no problems. It sounds like their browser experience is poor, I don’t know if that’s a browser limitation or bad design, but their app on Windows and Mac performs quite well.

Mistakes were made with security early in their product. It’s clear that has turned a lot of potential users against them.

I’m curious why companies like Facebook get more acceptance over terrible security, but other companies are never forgiven

codefreakxff··on SpaceX SN9 Explodes on Landing
Well. Yes. It appears to be a fully functioning launch vehicle and just as reusable as its predecessors, don’t see much downside in making the landings more “interesting”. When they work out the dynamics of it then they really have something that will revolutionize launches
codefreakxff··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
There is NO reason? Not even that is where the FastAPI is hosted and is the developer’s website? You can’t think of any other examples of something linking to the product homepage?
codefreakxff··on Again on 0-based vs. 1-based indexing
Fully agree. Got to the end of the post and was looking for the rest. The ranting could have been fine if there was more information and exploration. As it is, it’s unremarkable and not worth reading
codefreakxff··on Raspberry Pi Lego Sorter
This isn’t for sorting 2-3 left over pieces from built sets. This is for sorting bulk boxes of bricks like you might have after your kids play with their sets and dump everything into a big pile
codefreakxff··on Do not sign a contract with Snowflake
That’s how roll over works. If you sign up for a cellphone and expect them to keep your line active when you cancel because you have roll over credits, you would also be out of luck
codefreakxff··on Apache OpenMeetings – Video chat, messaging, white board, doc editing and more
Oh man. I want to like Apache products, or maybe “projects” is more accurate. It’s really quite the dumping ground of random things. I’ve tried so many of them, and it feels like it’s mostly a random professor implements something to justify his of her position at a university, gets it approved for Apache to get more prestige, has students add random bits every year. It’s just all so uncohesive within itself, or as a whole.

Like, you might not like Microsoft Office, or the Mac suite. But at least you don’t end up with Microsoft Word, Mac Numbers, Gmail, Office 365 notes, and pretend that everything is one office suite.

Apache really needs to define and enforce some unifying standards.

Or we need something un-Apache that can do this for open projects.

codefreakxff··on Laser fusion reactor approaches ‘burning plasma’ milestone
Hmm. It looks more like it exploded with no ignition. But they think they are close!

A decade and 3,000 failures and they are probably spinning some PR so they don’t get defunded

codefreakxff··on Nvidia Announces A100 80GB GPU for AI
Not original poster. Also got ads for things I would definitely like. 100% of them were cheap crap that actually did not work at all. Stopped using Facebook because I got tired of the deceptive ads, lack of accountability, and invasive profiling

And, yes, I do think Facebook should take responsibility for the content of their ads and products sold through them. If the New York Times only sold ads for scams, and all their articles were lies, we would no longer trust the New York Times

Facebook is like Vegas strip junk ads. It may look nice, but you’re going to have a bad time

codefreakxff··on /.bashrc VS –/.profile VS –/.bash_profile
They mean the diagram is useless, and quite possibly wrong. What is going on with zsh??
codefreakxff··on Semi-transparent solar panels allow concurrent production of crops and power
The tone of your post (being simultaneously dismissive and insulting to those who have a different view than you) is very trollish. The problem many people have with nuclear power are things like accidents making areas uninhabitable, radiation making people sick, disposal of waste rods is difficult, some materials can be used to make weapons, and the cost to make a safe plant are staggering and leading to cancellation of projects.

Renewable sources don’t have these downsides. Are they ugly? Not any uglier than a concrete dome and cooling systems of a nuclear power plant. You can bet wine country does not want a nuclear plant in their valley either. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to zone land usage appropriately.

codefreakxff··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
Probably the most informative source

codefreakxff··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
I love these comments like "you've clearly never X".

I have, in fact, used Taxis in California. Is it easier to use Uber or Lyft? Yes. Is there absolutely no alternative as the commenter above suggests? No.

We can have a conversation around why the Taxi system sucks, if you'd like.

codefreakxff··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
It's called a Taxi. They will drive to your location, pick you up, and take you anywhere you want to go.
codefreakxff··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
Just to clarify, a "toddler" is 1-3 years old. So a 5 year old is not at all "almost a toddler".

"A 5 year old does not have these skills"

They should have learned that by age 4, which is why kids start pre-k/k at the 4/5 age range.

"Who said this article has to have a point?"

Probably because we expect more from the source - The Atlantic. If this was the author's personal blog I would not be saying anything. But this article sits next to subjects like:

- Can a Protest Movement Topple Netanyahu? - Russiagate Was Not a Hoax - Our Students Are Depending on Us, teaching through Covid-19

codefreakxff··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
I do work from home, and my 10 year old is doing remote learning.

There are many benefits to remote learning, and I know it will come as a shock to people who buy into the 'kids need to socialize' group-think, but the 'socializing' they do in school tends to be very limited in time (a couple of 10-15 minute breaks on the playground, talking at lunch, disrupting classes and not listening to the teacher), and then there is the problem of bullying and cliques of students excluding 'non-conforming' students. Mental health at school isn't handled well. Fairness is out the window. School shootings are growing exponentially.

https://www.ecori.org/public-safety/2019/9/7/us-school-shoot...

Schools suck.

I'd rather my child get his socializing from extracurricular activities with peers he knows and gets along with than dealing with the failures of our educational system.

This article decries remote learning and offers nothing to move the conversation forward on what WOULD work. The author makes no point at all other than complaining about how her child can't sit still. And I'm saying I bet her child can't sit still in a physical school either, so its not about remote learning. It is because suddenly she has to be the one to deal with it instead of the teacher hidden away in a school building. The author wants to paint a picture of how bad remote learning is, when really it's just not suited for her child. It works fine for many other kids.

codefreakxff··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
Wow. Agree with all the other comments. I read the whole article, and there is some next level self-centered entitlement here that has wholly passed on to "Raffi" the 5 year old who is only now learning not to deliberately make his little brother cry, and who has learned that spitting his drink on a laptop makes mommy and daddy take him to the park. While I want to empathize with the parents, the fact that they blame remote learning for all their problems rather than realizing that they have raised a hellion and dumped him on the poor teachers at school... and are bitter that now they have to deal with their own child... wow... yeah, definitely not the parents problem. Everything is to blame on remote learning! We better re-open the schools again so parents don't have to deal with their children!
codefreakxff··on CDC director: Keeping schools closed greater health threat to children reopening
Why is this being posed as either closing the schools and kids get no education or making kids go to school with expensive mitigations, and masks, etc. Why hasn't there been a serious effort at converting to online learning just like the transitions that happening around working remotely?
codefreakxff··on Mysterious deep-space flashes repeat every 157 days
Oh man, I don't want to get into an argument on HN. But you didn't really read the previous comment with a generous eye. The poster never mentioned "faster than light" travel at all. In fact, they specifically called out AT or NEAR light speed, and then gave wormhole travel as an example of "not traveling via speed".

codefreakxff··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
Comments here are missing one point. The very first thing the page says is “a new pro line for iPhone that delivers advanced performance for users who want the very best smartphone”. This is not meant to appeal to the mass market. It’s to silence critics that the competition is faster, has a better camera, longer battery, etc.

It’s true, this phone is not innovative and they pretty much say that.

I’m curious what would be innovative in a phone now, as opposed to incremental.

codefreakxff··on Disneyland’s Disastrous Opening Day (2015)
I’ve been to a corporate training session at Disneyland where they talked about keeping the park clean. Broken Window theory is part of it, so they take active steps to keep the park clean. For example, they studied how far people were willing to walk before they would just drop their trash on the ground and then put trash cans within that distance of each other. They have employees whose job it is to sweep constantly, but every single employee takes pride in the park and picks up trash lying around. If one lightbulb is out they replace all the lightbulbs to reduce the broken window effect and keep the appearance that they aren’t constantly fixing things.

No city that I know of takes this approach. I’ve heard anecdotally of some cities striving for it. But I can’t imagine it being at the same level as the Disney culture

codefreakxff··on Motion smoothing is ruining cinema
The 24 FPS movie rate premise is that the human eye can’t detect the difference of higher frame rates. But the higher frame rate TV demos look amazing and movies that are resampled look like crap to people because they CAN see at more than 24 FPS.

I’m not saying that the resampling is right, but I am super questioning this film rate in a digital age.

I’m also questioning the algorithm that just creates a messy blur of nonsense between two frames. Surely we can create a smarter algorithm

codefreakxff··on Ask HN: What do middle-level managers do?
Was Director of IT. My manager would be considered Middle Management. She had a half dozen directors reporting her and would meet with them to get updates and set goals for each department every week. She would pour over all the financials and accounting to make sure things were on track. She would take the results of meetings back to Upper Management and tell them everything was fine. Upper Management would then go play golf and figure out some new way of expanding our lines of business, or meet with random groups of staff to make their presence known, put on a friendly face. No idea what else Upper Management did with the rest of their day
codefreakxff··on Raspberry Pi 4
I don’t disagree that 4 usb-c could have been more forward thinking. But, you don’t NEED to use a dongle, you can buy an hdmi-to-micro cable.
codefreakxff··on Has “Homosexual” Always Been in the Bible?
I don’t follow your argument from having read the article. It says the original version was against sleeping with young boys, not men. And the 1983 version changed it from young boys to homosexuality. The author argues the original word was Greek and the text was to denounce Pederasty, which was a strange Greek practice. He also argues this change in word was deliberately made by as part of a larger anti gay agenda
