code_Whisperer··on Breaking up with Windows – need a recommendation
All good advice, thanks! It's daunting as 'an old' to make a switch like this. I've gone from RSTS/E to TRS-80s to CP/M to MS-DOS to Desqview/Windows and pretty much stuck with Windows since then. It's never been so much about it being a 'preference', it's just the path on which I landed. Now that I am faced with paying (again) for an operating system which, in turn, considers me to be a product to be harvested and monetized, I guess I've had enough.

Thanks for the feedback. I also neglected to mention that I still use POP on many of these accounts to store/control my emails locally.

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: What is the vanishing Spitzer-Webb star?
It's interesting. When I was younger (and more active as an amateur astronomer) we used a homemade blink comparator to hunt for asteroids/minor planets, which works on this same principle. Do you have the source links for these to determine how much time elapsed between these two images? There is actually another movement in this same image (about 80% down from the top and just to the right of center there is a trio of stars... the rightmost one in the trio moves down and to the left in the higher res photo). Depending on the amount of time between these two images, could be parallax/motion from a much closer star, could be an asteroid or similar object, could be data anomaly, could be lots of things. One thing I know, however... that's no moon.

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Life-like audio setup for spoken-word content?
I am by no means a professional audio engineer, but I p̶l̶a̶y̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶T̶V̶ am a lifelong audio enthusiast, so these are my clearly my opinion, but: I once did an experiment recording a solo piano concert in a beautiful music hall. One instrument only, not a band or a group. I created two setups for the recording, one was with two traditionally-placed high-end mics, and the other was with a binaural head recording unit sitting in the audience. Afterward, I asked several people to compare the two recordings and give me their opinion. Many comments about the traditional mic setup were quite favorable ("this recording is very clean" or "very pristine" or "this sounds like a good CD recording", etc.). But without exception, every person who then listened to the binaural recording gasped or exclaimed about how realistic it sounded. About how it sounded like they were sitting there in front of the piano. Some even had goosebumps. The very-good-but-standard stereo setup recorded reverb, overtones, harmonics and so much more in a beautiful way, but the binaural recording caught the subtle cues and millisecond differences in right ear-left ear perception that can fool the brain into thinking it's live. It's not just about 'stereo separation' or 'left-right panning'. Check these out (ONLY WITH HEADPHONES) for an idea of why binaural audio is so interesting (even better if you close your eyes and do not move your head while listening): https://open.spotify.com/track/6CXy9faZUH6K49dcJOikK9?si=b8b... https://open.spotify.com/track/2U46YhTirldVjofuErenz7?si=579...

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Life-like audio setup for spoken-word content?
Based on experience, I would say that the most critical part of that chain is the recording technique and quality, followed closely by the audio reproduction. To get the most amazing, lifelike experience you are seeking, however, (and in my opinion) you would most likely need to be using high quality headphones and a similarly high quality recording made using the binaural mic technique. This technique mimics how sound waves travel around your head and into your ears. A good binaural recording will shine only when you listen with headphones, don't even bother trying with speakers. If you've never heard it before, it will probably shock you.

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: What service does Robinhood use for emails
Looking at a recent email I received from them, it appears to originate from o26.email.robinhood.com, which resolves to 149.72.71.69, which in turn (per ARIN) belongs to Sendgrid. Other emails I've received vary in the first portion of the 'received from' value (e.g. o2, o6, etc.) YMMV.

I've mentioned this before (on HN) but I will say it again... Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovksy was one of the best books I've read in recent years. Since you asked, one of the main characters is an AI.

code_Whisperer··on Strange domain problem – need advice
Thanks. Already have SPF and DKIM. These are not spoofed emails being sent out from the domain. This is someone out there who is going to websites and signing up for stuff and using an email address that does not exist at my domain. My guess is that they signed-up for a Google Workspace account thinking that they'd be able to then retrieve emails coming back to them.

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
Thank you for this! Based on your recommendation of Lem's "Fiasco" I have purchased "This is How You Lose the Time War". I had not heard of this one and it sounds excellent!
code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
Agreed. I mentioned that it is 'imaginative and fun', but it is not the same style of "The Martian" which (in my opinion) had nearly perfect technical execution. I admit to having had some apprehension about a loved author's next effort (I'm looking at you, "Artemis" and "Armada"), but "Hail Mary" did not fulfill that dread for me. So... yay!
code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
Hah! Just read his Amazon author biography. I think I might like this guy.
code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
The one that sticks in my head the most (and which I did not think I would enjoy based on the book jacket blurb) is "Children of Time" by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I highly recommend to anyone who listens. I also recently encountered "The Fifth Science" by someone named 'Exurb1a' and enjoyed it so much that I am now reading another of his books named "Geometry for Ocelots" Andy Weir's "Hail Mary" is an imaginative and fun read, as is "The Startup Wife" by Tahmima Anam. Oh! And "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet' (or almost anything else) by Becky Chambers.

code_Whisperer··on Is Authorize.net Down?

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Do you love to code? Why?
Perhaps I am an anomaly, but for me the love of coding has to do with the creative cycle. The fact that I am creating something tangible, that other people can use and might even find interesting, and out of nothing more than my own thoughts is very exciting. It's probably the same reason why I enjoy finding/buying blank pads of paper and interesting notebooks, journals, great pens, etc. I experience the same feeling composing, performing and/or listening to music. In fact, I believe that coding and music (and math) have a lot in common, and many of the best coders I've ever known are also musicians themselves.
code_Whisperer··on Brain.fm: Music to improve focus, meditation and sleep
I have used Brain.fm for a couple of years now and recommend it to others. I can't comment on the scientific claims because that is not one of my areas of expertise. However, I CAN tell you that when I need to really focus on a project, I always turn it on (with headphones only, as that is the way it is supposed to be experienced) and it allows me to get into 'the zone' very quickly, and I find that I can stay in the zone for long periods of time. It does help that there are several 'genres' of focus music (I tend to use classical, electronic music and piano focus the most). I have not used it much for relaxation or sleep, only focus. (I am not employed or otherwise associated with Brain.fm, just a satisfied user)
code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: How to create single email for each service I use?
Wife and I have been doing this for the last 10 years or so (using catchalls) and I can share a few thoughts based on experience: (1) We try to use addresses that will immediately identify the sender (e.g. homedepot@xxxxxxx.com). This has the added benefit of allowing us to see which companies might be selling our information to other entities (or which have potentially had data breaches). We've also been able to identify when employees leave a vendor we use and take the mailing list with them. For example, I had several of my clients with a large hosting/colo company and created unique account emails for each, e.g. client1.hostingcompany@xxxxxxx.com, client2.hostingcompany@xxxxxxx.com, etc.). When my sales contact left the hosting/colo company and joined another unrelated (CRM software) company, whaddya know... each of these truly unique email addresses which had never been used anywhere else suddenly started receiving unsolicited email from the CRM company. (2) Spam can be an issue when you use catchalls for several years. Once one of your custom-defined emails finds it way onto a single list, it will suddenly start receiving emails from MANY spammers as the list propagates. This is manageable with filters, but be aware that it carries a bit of time/labor cost. (3) It is sometimes quite fun (and potentially useful) when a big company asks for your email address on the phone. Let's say I am talking to a Seagate support person and they ask for my email address. I tell them 'seagate@xxxxxxx.com' and there's usually a brief pause as they struggle to understand. Sometimes it's a bit funny, other times I notice an immediate positive change in their attitude (almost as if they think I am part of some quality control or secret shopper team) YMMV.

code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Is it possible to sell a startup, but also keep a small stake in it?
I am unsure how common it is, but I do know that for many entrepreneurs it can sometimes be painful to sell your company/product/culture/idea that you have worked on for so long and for so hard, so I think it is a way for creators to remain part of their creation. :-)
code_Whisperer··on Ask HN: Is it possible to sell a startup, but also keep a small stake in it?
Certainly, it's all part of the negotiation. You could negotiate retaining x% of the stock (along with rules regarding stock type, splits, etc.). Another common negotiation when selling your startup would be to retain a position (e.g. lead developer, marketing manager, even CEO!) for x months or years. Or an option for right of first refusal to buy it back if your purchaser ever decides they want to sell the company (or its assets) in the future. Everything is negotiable, but you should always have a lawyer help work out the agreements and details.
