cmiller1··on Why the Ultrarich Are Unplugging from "Smart Homes"
A long time ago when I envisioned a "smart home of the future" I imagined using lots of sensors to control vents, windows, blinds, and HVAC to more efficiently heat and cool the house and optimize comfort in it while using less energy. I still would like something like that but instead we got dishwashers you can turn on with your phone...

cmiller1··on I bought a Mac
I'd say the best PPC Mac will depend on exactly what you want to do on it.

Fastest that can natively run OS 9 with full driver support is going to be the MDD.

Best low cost and low space for tinkering is going to be the mini with the caveats you mentioned.

Best price to performance on the used market for PPC OS X software is probably an iMac G5.

Absolute best performance for PPC OS X stuff is going to be the PowerMac G5.

Honorable mention to the eMac, which can be be found for ~$100, 1ghz combo drive models and below can natively run OS 9 with full driver support or you can go with up to the 1.42 ghz model which is going to be similar to the fastest G4 minis, and comes with a beautiful built in CRT, with the caveat that it takes up as much space as a CRT.

> - ScummVM, maybe modern games could run under a G4 with Altivec

Having done some testing for the PPC version of ScummVM on 10.4 I can say that it won't run many of the more modern games because none of those machines supported shaders on the GPU, which many of the more modern ScummVM supported games like Thimbleweed Park depend on. A software shader implementation could be added in theory if someone had the gumption to build it but it would most likely be unusably slow on those older machines.

cmiller1··on HP avoids monetary damages over printers in class-action settlement
It probably could? I was just talking about the waste aspect.
cmiller1··on HP avoids monetary damages over bricked printers in class-action settlement
I'm not sure how legislating the razor and blade business model would help with the bit about e-waste. The basic idea is simply that the product is sold at a loss but the consumables (ink, blades, vape cartridges) are sold with high markup. My gut reaction is that making the consumables cheaper would increase the waste because people would be buying more of those consumables.
cmiller1··on Apple shuffles AI executive ranks in bid to turn around Siri
I tried it with Siri and it worked the same, giving me the full date.
cmiller1··on Why aren't we losing our minds over the plastic in our brains?
I'm more scared of macroplastics, a 2 ton hunk of plastic falling on you will kill you way faster.
cmiller1··on What's the Deal with Magnetic Fields?
I was at a Mark Mulcahy show in Hamden, CT and he started covering a Magnetic Fields song, it was the only time in my life where I just screamed in fan excitement.
cmiller1··on Ratzilla
Switching tabs doesn't seem to overwrite the vertical lines, I have pink and green pipes drawn on the 2nd and 3rd tab that were supposed to only be on the first one.
cmiller1··on Adding iodine to salt played a role in cognitive improvements: research (2013)
I looked up this Brownstein protocol and the first result is the FTC taking action against the guy for making false medical claims by making up a crazy vitamin protocol and falsely advertising it as a way to prevent or cure coronavirus.

Nice, it's a universal binary! Works great on my PPC machine.

cmiller1··on A notification for you, Apple: There is no husband
I wouldn't mind these "smart" TVs so much if they didn't suck so much for regular use. Why does it take 30+ seconds for me to get my television turned on when I just want to use a gaming console plugged into one of the inputs??
cmiller1··on Two auto-braking systems can't see people in reflective garb: report
> Ultimately, camera-only vision systems will likely be the best solution, but until then, integrating LIDAR will get us much further.

Why though? How could it possibly be better than camera plus other sensors?

cmiller1··on Mac Mini G4 – The best « classic » Macintosh for retro-gaming?
I use an eMac for this purpose. Available in similar configurations to the mini, the 1 ghz combo drive model and below can boot os 9 natively without the hacked os9lives version, and it comes with a beautiful 17 inch trinitron CRT built in!
cmiller1··on Bringing SerenityOS to real hardware, one driver at a time
Hey, if they target PowerPC I could run it on my eMac!

cmiller1··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
Perhaps, but the fact that they needed to include that line almost defensively speaks to the culture, as if they had to justify why they were reading fiction books.
cmiller1··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
> I was also going through a phase in my life where I believed reading more fiction would help power up my imagination.

I kind of hate this mindset. Why does reading always have to be with the goal of self improvement? When someone binge watches a new TV series on Netflix no one asks them what skill they were trying to sharpen by enjoying that media.

cmiller1··on New Box64 v0.3.2 and Box86 v0.3.8 released (Native Flags, Benchmarks, Box32)
While I'm sure this is cool, I had to read a few typo filled paragraphs in to even start to get an idea of what the heck Box64 and Box86 are (some kind of emulator it seems from the comparison to Rosetta?)
