clyfe··on Make A Game (maga) is a node.js framework for multiplayer games
Can the latency be improved ?

Reminds me of http://holiday2010.ogilvy.com

The game-engine, collision and logic run on
the server in JavaScript running on Node.js.
The clients are simply rendering information
sent from the server, and sending off keyboard input.

clyfe··on Ask HN: What do you dislike most about HackerNews?
How everyone hides the true knowledge. That's why people worship "the bingo guy" he's one of the few that disclose.

clyfe··on Ask HN: What's the best way to do COMET in PHP?
PHP is probably not a good choice for COMET because the required open connection will block your server:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/603201/using-comet-with-p...

I guess this is the corner case one would use services like pusherapp.com

PS. Don't you like services that deliberately try to hide information from you?

clyfe··on [dead]
Doing something from nothing is worth respect. I wouldn't say worship but anyway ...
clyfe··on Ask HN: What's the best website to learn Ruby on Rails
I learned rails a long time ago from http://pragprog.com/titles/rails4/agile-web-development-with... (I learned from the 1st edition)

These days there are also:

http://guides.rubyonrails.org/

http://railscasts.com/

clyfe··on Ask HN: Caching in Ruby?
As the ruby application loads in memory at startup and then is executed from there (in production) there is no need of bytecode caching, in contrast with PHP where the code is read, parsed and interpreted on each request, and in this (second) case, caching the bytecode to save parsing execution makes sense.

That is the case of bytecode caching. In regards to other forms of caching (etag, memoization etc) frameworks implement different strategies.

clyfe··on Ask HN: What's the big deal about Ruby and/or Rails?
Ruby is probably the most zen thought interpreted OO programming language.

    Example: http://news.ycombinator.com/x?fnid=IpkcxQEdui
Rails is probably the most zen thought web framework.

Compare Rails#has_many with Django#foreign_key , which feels more natural?
The sum renders the benefit of cognitive discharge that lets you focus on important stuff and not tinker on details.

The rest is huge community, huge documentation, large mature ecosystem (mostly web stuff, python's SciPy pretty much way-ahead, all tough ruby can do science too), lots of best practices from the start, github-lead, mature implementations etc

clyfe··on Ask HN: Linear algebra and web software?
Making sense of large corpus of text via machine learning, say .. SVM which stands on top of linear algebra (computing inner products in an isomorphic space of bigger dimension via kernel functions) (Hillary Mason working at bit.ly gives talks about this stuff http://www.hilarymason.com/ )

Data mining, a lot of which boils down to multidimensional exploratory statistics needs linear algebra.

clyfe··on Ask HN: A modern web development workflow?
If Heroku taught us something, it's developing apps inside the browser is not lucrative. Learn from them and provide git push deploy. Bonus points: better Web DB interface, DB import-export.

PS. It's nice to see such Romanian projects.

clyfe··on Ask HN: I don't like Rails. Am I missing something?
I am an experienced Rails developer and evangelist. I much (NB: opinion) prefer Rails over everything else. If you would be so kind to share details or code (if possible) I might point out what you are doing wrong, and why Rails seems not to work for you.

clyfe··on The Path Forward: Ruby 1.9.2
How about a 1.9.2 compatible heroku gem ? Do I still have to run heroku commands on a 1.8.7 ruby ? Last time I checked it was still binary-tied to 1.8.7.

I think 37 inspiration is a good thing it ultimately leeds to a good product with familiar feel. There is no trademark on layout or "less is more" is it? That is like saying we can't do gui apps based on the window metaphor because MS.

PS.

I was struck by the same feeling. The layout, the -hq suffix, the big sign-up button, the scroll, the minimalism, the friendly phrase, and not to mention "the product" (collaboration), AND THE PRICING (149$) :) worth building on other's market study.
