clpm4j··on Sam Bankman-Fried Has a Savior Complex–and Maybe You Should Too
Yeah I saw that, but I meant directly from Alfred or Michelle (both had been vocal advocates on Twitter prior to this blowup).
clpm4j··on Sam Bankman-Fried Has a Savior Complex–and Maybe You Should Too
Still crickets from the Sequoia partners (Alfred Lin, Michelle Bailhe) who backed and hyped FTX and SBF.
clpm4j··on Major investor calls on Google owner to ‘aggressively’ cut staff and pay
Ah of course, billionaire Sir Christopher Hohn wants hundreds of people/families to lose their incomes so that he can potentially juice a few more percentage points of fund returns.
clpm4j··on FTX Investors Warned of Likely Bankruptcy Without New Funds
Off topic but I personally hope the meme/stereotype of the slovenly eccentric genius falls out of fashion with startup investors after this whole SBF blowup. It sounds like none of these bluechip VCs did any sort of meaningful diligence, but instead fawned over his strange persona and the fact that he would actively play League of Legends during investor meetings [1].

clpm4j··on Meta Is Preparing to Notify Employees of Large-Scale Layoffs This Week
I would say that "living on Mars" could be classified as delusional.
clpm4j··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
That's what I've seen (from the outside, with some friends who work at Stripe) as well - it's the old investment banking / management consulting work culture, i.e. your job is your life.
clpm4j··on Tesla Engineers Visit Twitter Office to Review Code for Musk
This is absolutely ridiculous, but probably sounds plausible to anyone who isn't a software developer.

""" Earlier Thursday in Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, product leaders showed Tesla engineers the company’s code, so they could assess and explain to Musk what the company needs, according to one of the people. """

clpm4j··on Everything I wish I had known about raising a seed round
If there's an actual business, then the VCs will evaluate and choose whether to bet on that. If there's no business, then the VCs will evaluate the founders and choose whether to bet on them. A real (successful) business AND extremely impressive founders don't have to reach out to VCs because they're already beating a path towards them.
clpm4j··on Facebook reportedly laying off thousands of employees
In what way is iMessage bad? It works amazingly well from my perspective.
clpm4j··on CppCon 2022
Has anyone recently written a non-trivial greenfield project using modern C++20? Or know of any such interesting projects on GH with very well written C++20?
clpm4j··on The elusive future of San Francisco’s fog
I can't recall a single day this year during which we've had what you've described. Certainly the "more often than real fog" statement is completely false.
clpm4j··on Tim Cook revealed the real reason Apple won’t fix green bubbles
[I'm an American] I've heard that the reason WhatsApp became so popular in Europe is because European cellphone services used to (still do?) charge for texts per message whereas in the US it quickly became commonplace for all service providers to include "unlimited texting" plans. From my perspective, I never felt the need to download any additional app for messaging - the default messaging app was always the go-to way to text people before smart phones, and then when the iPhone came out that just continued with iMessage as the new default messaging app.
clpm4j··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
She didn't really "sign up" for it though. She was born into it in 1926. It's not like 2022 where she could've said "yeah, not for me, I'm moving to Santa Barbara". I don't see how she had any choice but to do what she did, and by all accounts she did it well.
clpm4j··on Go Developer Survey 2022 Q2 Results
Wasn't YouTube rewritten mostly in Go several years ago? Java and C++ won't be displaced as the primary languages at Google, but I think Go is in the top 4 languages they use (along with TypeScript).
clpm4j··on Economists are flocking to Silicon Valley
Or said another way, economists are making a rational decision and choosing the highest paying industry, technology, which happens to be HQ'd in Silicon Valley.
clpm4j··on The rise of workplace surveillance [audio]
I listened to the podcast episode yesterday. Apparently some (I think they only cited one person as a source) people use it as a form of motivation and focus. They also said some women view it as a type of equalizer. But the ultimate takeaway was that the systems and the data are inherently not very accurate in their measurements.
clpm4j··on Move fast or die: Key startup lessons
'developer' and 'programmer' really are more apt terms - 'engineer' sounds more impressive though
clpm4j··on Oven (Bun)'s first employee will “grind” for nine months with poor WLB
Good point. There are probably 100 seniors at UC Berkeley EECS ready to sign up for this opportunity.
clpm4j··on Ask HN: Are you part of the Great Resignation, if so what's your story?
No clue in terms of dollar amount, but enough to buy nice houses in San Francisco, drive nice cars, and no worries about eventually having kids and sending them to private schools. They seem pretty satisfied but who knows behind closed doors.
clpm4j··on Ask HN: Are you part of the Great Resignation, if so what's your story?
I've had a few close friends quit and essentially retire at the age of 30, and it's only possible because they have wealthy families who gave them early inheritances - it's really quite amazing how rich some people are.
clpm4j··on Tech’s Offshore Hiring Has Gone into Overdrive
I've had some very positive experiences working with offshore teams, and I do think that large enterprises have plenty of value to derive from offshoring, but I were building a new startup today and knew that my competitors were relying heavily on offshore teams for their development I would be ecstatic.
clpm4j··on Google extends its hiring freeze
They grew from ~40k employees to ~70k employees in the past 3 years... that's just too much hiring. Regardless of how well or poor the state of the economy is, slowing employee growth is probably the smart move.
clpm4j··on What I Learned at Clubhouse
I'm not affiliated with a16z in any way, so I can't speak for their thoughts, but I do know that it isn't uncommon for VCs to have an "IPO or nothing" point of view. They invested in Clubhouse at a $4billion post-money valuation with what I imagine was/is a belief that it could be a $40billion exit in the future.
clpm4j··on What I Learned at Clubhouse
I think the founders negotiated a secondary in series A - took a couple million off the table. I imagine a16z likely had some clause in the paperwork that prevented them from accepting an acquisition offer this early (I'm speculating).

clpm4j··on Twitter Layoff Started Today
$4k is the going rate for a nice-ish 1 bedroom apartment in a good SF neighborhood. The people I know who have a partner and one child are typically spending $5-6k/mo if they're renting.
clpm4j··on Covid-19 vaccine doses, once in high demand, now thrown away
That's what I was expecting. Makes me think I might've caught one of the new variants. I'm quite fit and healthy, so I don't think it's a matter of weak immune system.
clpm4j··on Covid-19 vaccine doses, once in high demand, now thrown away
I recently got Covid. My original vaccine was in April 2021, shot #2 in May 2021, and booster in December 2021. It really knocked me out for a solid week + persistent symptoms and very annoying cough for another two weeks. I would happily take another booster shot but apparently I'm not eligible yet (in California). Shame to hear that some doses are being thrown away - I'd take a shot every other month if it would prevent me from getting Covid again.
clpm4j··on Crypto’s last man standing
There are still some notable people in crypto who want to see the concept succeed. I imagine we'll see at least a few more try (and probably blow up) before they get regulated out of existence.
clpm4j··on Driverless robotaxi fleet paralyzed for hours in San Francisco
Not an industry insider, but as an SF resident I tend to see far more Waymo vehicles on the road. A decent number of Cruise vehicles (although maybe they cluster in FiDi/SoMA areas in which case I wouldn't see them). Very few Zoox.
