closetohome··on Why are we so bad at software engineering?
This is also where non-software companies get into trouble trying to do software projects. They think they're building a house so they hire a carpenter. They don't realize they're also going to need a general contractor and maybe a carpet guy.
closetohome··on The Myth of the Barter Economy (2016)
This is what I kept thinking while reading the article. Currency always evolves, it just might not look like currency at first. As someone else said, wheat and copper were popular for a long time.

I remember way back when Diablo 2 was big, in-game gold was essentially worthless as it was so common. So players started using bushels of a somewhat-rare and generally useful magic ring as currency.

closetohome··on Apple Pay on pace to account for 10% of global card transactions
I'm developing a terrible habit of only buying things if the site supports PayPal or Apple Pay.
closetohome··on The AI delusion: why humans trump machines
That's like saying spiders aren't scary. It's a little subjective.
closetohome··on The AI delusion: why humans trump machines
Because if you don't subscribe to a branch of philosophy that's ok with being just a Newtonian thinking machine, it's kind of a scary concept.
closetohome··on Google App Maker Shutting Down
Google also has a lot of assets that are just too labor-intensive to replicate with any efficiency. Apple found that out when they tried to compete in Maps.

And for all that Google indexes and initiates from their end, every SEO worker on earth also makes sure their client's sites are properly formatted and submitted. That kind of buy-in is reserved for companies that can demonstrate you'll get a return on your investment.

closetohome··on Wikipedia now has more than 6M articles in English
The editors and the organization are the same thing. The organization sets policy and culture, and editors do all of the actual work. Diversity and equality don't cost money.

closetohome··on Master of Orion
You can argue specific strengths and weaknesses, but Stellaris is, by any financial or sales metric, an A-list hit.

Everybody wants to sell razor blades these days.
closetohome··on The two party system is killing our democracy
What a relevant conservative talking point.
closetohome··on The two party system is killing our democracy
Don't forget Seattle. Where progressive policies have also led to disastrous situations like a booming economy, low unemployment, and less crime.
closetohome··on People no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life, survey shows
> Success these days

Success has always been about sucking up to the right people.

> It has been known within public health for decades

If public health officials were running the planet, we'd all be better off.

closetohome··on 13.3" full color ePaper display
This is because people frequently try to scam stores by swapping labels and such.
closetohome··on What good is Bitcoin if the Internet fails?
It really isn't that insightful an article. They have one source - a PR flak for a crypto company - and his solutions all boil down to "rebuild some form of Internet." An Iridium phone connected to a mesh network is just inconvenient Internet access.
closetohome··on What good is Bitcoin if the Internet fails?
In some countries I could see this being an issue, as the Internet can be shut down entirely for any number of political reasons.

In the US, if the Internet is out everywhere for an extended period of time, Bitcoin will be the least of anyone's worries.

closetohome··on AirPods revenue does not exceed Spotify, Twitter, Snapchat, and Shopify revenue
At some point the popular wire insulation changed from a kind of super-flexible silicone-like plastic to a resin-based PVC-free version. Partly for environmental reasons, but it had the side-effect of making wires a little stiffer and slicker. It's also why a couple generations of Lightning cables were known for splitting at the bend point.

I'm not sure if this 100% explains what you're seeing, but it's probably a factor.

closetohome··on Proposed FAA Rule Would Kickstart New Economy for IDing Drones
Exactly. It's rent-seeking by existing aviation companies that don't want to share with drone startups.

The FAA has spent the last two decades making sure the US is in last place when it comes to commercialized drones, and this is a continuation of those efforts.

closetohome··on The McDonnell Douglas-Boeing merger led to the 737 Max crisis
I think if you want a glimpse into the future of competitive behavior as the population increases and climate change starts gnawing on the economy, look at the school systems in South Korea and China. Absolutely cutthroat from day one, because there are so many people competing for the same resources.
closetohome··on The McDonnell Douglas-Boeing merger led to the 737 Max crisis
I live in a city that conservatives have been claiming for years will drive away all business, real estate development, and wealthy individuals with our progressive taxes and regulations.

Yet every year our economy grows and our quality of life improves.

If businesses leave, they're the type of business you wouldn't want around anyway.

closetohome··on Nebraska farmers vote overwhelmingly for Right to Repair
For anyone wondering, these are also sold outright (though not on their site I guess?) for $400. They are essentially a generic pair of bluetooth headphones that don't even have ANC, and use some kind of proprietary charging cable.
closetohome··on Nebraska farmers vote overwhelmingly for Right to Repair
Exactly - it's a perverse incentive against the interests of society.

The search for an ongoing revenue stream is one of the most destructive forces in the tech industry. It leads to some very customer-hostile experiences.
closetohome··on “Snowcrash” to be HBO series, compete with actual early Metaverses for viewers
Sure, I can see how that style could drag a little in long-form.
closetohome··on “Snowcrash” to be HBO series, compete with actual early Metaverses for viewers
I always loved that about them. Not all sci-fi needs to crawl into its own navel and reveal the condition of Man. Sometimes it can just create and explore a fantastic universe.

I blocked their update server with Little Snitch. Similar effect.
closetohome··on Thieves Are Using Bluetooth to Target Vehicle Break-Ins
Yeah the technique may be somewhat novel, but the solution (don't leave valuables in your car) is more or less the first thing I learned when I moved to a city 20 years ago.
closetohome··on So You Think You Want to Open a Brewery (2014)
Yep. Any and every kind of small business is a business first.

I figured that out from doing photography. People are like "wow you take good pictures you should be a photographer." They never go "wow you love working long hours and doing paperwork, you should start a business!"
