clobber··on Yahoo shutting down Message Boards and other services
Dinosaur (Noun): A person or thing that is outdated or has become obsolete because of failure to adapt to changing circumstances.

I'm not sure why you think I'm a "young'un" but, please get over yourself, "old timer."

So because 12px font was super readable on 640x480 CRT on Win95, we should continue to use that and never update our blogs?

Are you seriously trying to defend shitty readability in 2013? What a weirdo.

clobber··on Yahoo shutting down Message Boards and other services
Sure, I get the reason. I was using the example to relate to parent's comment.
clobber··on Groupon’s Bad Deal
Why yes, we should all emulate the famous Groupon pump-and-dump. Sheesh.
clobber··on Yahoo shutting down Message Boards and other services
Yep, not only that but Hacker News is used as an example on Contrast Rebellion: http://contrastrebellion.com/public/images/page2-img4.jpg

> 12px was the standard for a very long time.

Yeah, errrr....there is no "standard" on the web. Make your font sizes readable. It's really not hard.

clobber··on Yahoo shutting down Message Boards and other services
Who at Yahoo decided that a 12px font size was readable? Maybe start by firing that person?

clobber··on Andrew Mason out at Groupon
Wow with Eric Lefkofsky as the new CEO they went from bad to worse. Lefkofsky has always been the one behind the scenes pulling all the strings from early investment, cashing out his $1 BILLION and to the IPO. Yikes!
clobber··on Firefox Will Soon Block Third-Party Cookies
Sorry, this is a good thing and it makes the web better.

Advertisers have been abusing users for years and it just keeps getting worse. Local Shared Objects (Flash Cookies) are only one example. Facebook's attempt at the Beacon project was another.

Staying safe in that suburb somewhere?
clobber··on Why I Retired From Apple
Yeah well, find me one current employee who isn't afraid for their dear life to openly comment on working there without using an anonymous/throwaway account.

That demonstrates a workplace of fear.

clobber··on Why I Retired From Apple
I certainly hope that working Sunday nights and traditional corporate structures where we refer to co-workers below us as "minions" is not something the new generation of engineers aspire to.

This sounds like the typical toxic corporate work environment of people grabbing for "power."

Ecomonomics?

No.

I'm saying they're still losing money. The "lose money on units, make some back on software" model doesn't make economic sense anymore.

The second link has recent numbers.

clobber··on Stupid, Stupid xBox
Nobody seems to remember just how much money Microsoft and Sony have lost on their consoles.

- Through 2005, the Xbox gaming division had lost over $4 billion [1]

- Microsoft took a charge of $1 billion dollars on its June 2007 income statement to account for the cost of replacing bricked Xbox 360s [1]

- Xbox 360 and PS3 losses total $8 billion [2]

Luckily for Microsoft, they've had the cash to burn to strong-arm their way into the market. The units sold is nothing too impressive when you account for losses.

clobber··on Elon Musk calls NYT review of the Tesla Model S ‘fake,’ citing vehicle log data
Sure, except that Crichton was extremely outspoken regarding "climate change as a lie"[1] where he used his book, State of Fear, to present his views as facts[2]:

clobber··on Full MAME emulator for non-jailbroken iOS
If this comments thread is to be believed, the original iMAME in the app store was not pulled by Apple, but on request of MAMEdev team:

ScottishCaptain: "iMAME was pulled ON REQUEST of mamedev.org because it reflects poorly upon the project (as I quite clearly stated before, but got flamed into oblivion). iMAME (and it's derivatives) is based upon MAME 0.37b, which is nearly 10 years old now (if you don't believe me, go check out mamedev.org's previous version section and look up 0.37b- it's from y2k)."

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/24/imame-app-gets-pulled-fro...

Also, "MAME" is trademarked to the MAMEdev team and they request that you get their permission before using it.

clobber··on Ask HN: Is using Adblock unethical?
No.

Being an asshole are the sites that allow unethical tracking and pass around user private info from one ad network to the next. Take your weak argument elsewhere.

clobber··on Introducing Contributions
Streak? C'mon, what is this, Xbox Live?

Not all commits are created equal and I don't find this new 'contributions' calendar/graph at all useful.

You still cannot get a good snapshot of contributions for users that are members of organizations.

Not shocked that a bunch of kids whose first experience with a computer was Windows XP and all trying to recreate facebook have never heard of IRC

clobber··on Why Are People More Scared of Facebook Violating Their Privacy than Washington?
Not according to this: http://dashes.com/anil/2012/11/facebook-makes-it-official-yo...

Not that users ever had a say in the first place.

clobber··on “How Do TSA Employees Feel About Working For a Despised Agency?”
This sounds like a "just doing our duty" argument.

If you work for the TSA you're not just contributing to the problem, you are the problem.

clobber··on The Blame Game
Not sure. "Limit Ad Tracking" (Settings > General > About > Advertising) is Off by default in iOS 6. This option seems strangely left out of the "Privacy" section.

You also have to opt-out of "Interest-based ads" for iAds so they're collecting that data by default too. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4228)
