clickety_clack··on Pi 1.0
I’m also looking for tips. I feel like I get the gist, but if I sat down to use it, I don’t know what I want to start with. Like, I know it’s customizable, but what’s the on-ramp so I can figure out what that looks like?
clickety_clack··on Adding Floating-Point Decimals for Fun and Profit
Regular people understand the decimal system and they understand rounding in that system. The floating point system is a different system that they don't understand. People need to trust that the mechanics of payments are correct or they feel like they're being ripped off, and you can't really trust what you don't understand. Rounding of decimal pennies means that people get payments systems they can trust at the cost of precision. Nobody cares about sometimes being up or sometimes being down a fraction of a penny.
clickety_clack··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
The ECB doesn’t have the political power to force France to give up any monetary control. The EU might govern France, but France (and Germany) govern the EU.
clickety_clack··on Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes
Linen is an awful clothing material. I got a linen suit for the summer last year and it’s just such an inflexible material. A light wool has much more give, and with an open weave it does as much as a full suit of clothing can do to keep you cool.
clickety_clack··on Moist-Electric Wallpaper for Indoor Energy Harvesting and Humidity Management
I guess technically you’d be adding water to the water table since the water was in the air before you pulled it out.
clickety_clack··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
If France or Germany are involved, it’s doubtful the ECB would be able to impose austerity.
clickety_clack··on Pi.dev: You Said No MCP
Same here. At the moment I upload the file to s3 and pass the file link, but there should be a way to pass files alongside the chat.
clickety_clack··on The Beatles have permeated research papers across academic disciplines
I think maybe the radio and possibly tv programs that were shown probably had a lot to do with it. Just like social media came along had had a cultural impact, national tv and radio shows that weren’t targeted at news and high brow culture might have been pretty new at the time.
clickety_clack··on Coding is not solved
For me, coding is like writing. The act of doing it is how you reason out the problem. There’s a lot of magical thinking you can get away with in your head that doesn’t get properly tested until you write it down. For me, vibe coding is great and fast, but I’m not getting the same opportunity to think through the problem I’m trying to solve.
clickety_clack··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
What is the best quality fridge that is just a compressor connected to an insulated box?
clickety_clack··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
This can’t be true. There’s no way the lowest bid contractor would build something with security gaps.
clickety_clack··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
A lot of my problem with AI writing is that the facts aren’t checked. You get a big cheesy dramatic arc but the core story isn’t factually correct. There’s only so much time in a lifetime, too little to waste fact checking someone else’s work because they couldn’t be bothered to.
clickety_clack··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
I think the internet in general is a commons and I should be able to browse it without being spied on.

There should be general standards for what individual apps and websites should be allowed to do. There should be an expectation that the purpose of an app is what it does, i.e. a social connection app shouldn’t be an ad platform that suffers users insofar as they provide useful data to sell to advertisers.

Whenever I say something like “that’s a cool feature, but to do it you would have to build spyware”, everyone else is just like “the cat is out of the bag ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”. (I don’t build spyware, or work on projects that do).

It blows my mind that people don’t care about the world they are building with this stuff. It’s a real tragedy of the commons. People see these collaborators from different wars and regimes and think “I’d stand up against the bad guy”… well I’ve got news for you if you build spyware, you are not the person you think you are.

clickety_clack··on Mind-altering drugs played key role in rise of Andean civilization
I meant the graffiti and needles in tunnels and under bridges etc.
clickety_clack··on Psychoactive substances helped spur Andean civilization
Given that many of our current-day subterranean environments are also covered in art and strewn with drug paraphernalia, can we really say that it played a key role in the rise of the civilization?
clickety_clack··on Litelm: LiteLLM Without the Bloat
One of the 2 dependencies, httpx, isn't really maintained anymore. Pydantic picked it up as httpx2: https://pydantic.dev/docs/httpx2
clickety_clack··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
Failing to ask? Believe it or not, also jail.
clickety_clack··on Function Arguments Are Not Function Colors
I don’t know, “the change is a major pain in the ass” might be a good addition as criterion 4.
clickety_clack··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
I think that’s what we’re all talking about here, you shouldn’t.
clickety_clack··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
It only affected MACs (mediocre airtraffic controllers)
clickety_clack··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
“Speak softly and carry a big stick”. A Europe that is internally powerful can conduct trade in the fair and liberal way that matches its ideals.
clickety_clack··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Coupled or uncoupled, an equal relationship between the US and the EU is much healthier. Europe should have an economy, military and industrial capacity similar to the US.
clickety_clack··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
The means to do it would be things like uranium steel mills and concrete plants (via hydrogen production) or any of the huge number of industrial uses of heat. The amount of coal and oil burnt to produce industrial heat is mind-boggling.

People are meat eaters. If I was to run a campaign to keep the green movement unpopular, I’d promote enforced veganism as one of its core ideas.

clickety_clack··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
Nature isn't an arbiter of truth, it's a publisher of papers. It's also meant to be read critically by people who see a paper like this and and think "interesting, but this is just an observational study, I'd like to see more research, maybe something with more controls before I believe this".

Say what you want about the "correlation doesn't imply causation", but many people do not understand why that is. As a shorthand for "hey, you don't know the statistics behind this, so don't take the pretty picture at face value", it's pretty good.

clickety_clack··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
It might be common sense if you work with statistics, but most people don’t, and the only way they would know these things is if someone says them.

Regardless, it was the top comment so people clearly think it was valuable enough to vote for.

clickety_clack··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
By its fundamental design, an observational study cannot account for everything. That is the critique and it is a valid one.
clickety_clack··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
Would you prefer that people accept claims uncritically? It’s a valid critique of the results.
