claw-el··on How employment changes when firms adopt generative AI
To get onto Hacker News and other social media sites for marketing exposure?
claw-el··on US Supreme Court Just Blew Up EU-US Data Transfers
Not saying if I agree with noyb or not, but I don’t think noyb = EU.
claw-el··on Micron stock jumps 12% as memory crunch lead to quadrupling of revenue
I think this is part of the reason why TSMC is doing so well compared to the others, they seem to play this game(invest or not) much better than others.
claw-el··on Claude Tag
Fundamentally, Anthropic is a token merchant (it is higher quality than other models, but still token merchant), so it will find any excuse to make you spend more tokens, and not even try too hard to help you save on tokens.

The whole ‘inline visualization’ thing is another great example. You want to know about this new concept on Claude? Why don’t I generate this new ‘inline visualization’ for you to learn it even if it doesn’t significantly help you at all…

claw-el··on Sakana Fugu
Will Le Chat try to eat Sakana? There is Le Chaton Fat and then there is Sakana Fugu too..
claw-el··on Health insurance claim denial rates range from 13% to 35% by insurer
Honestly, if this means a more certain payment confirmation up front and not a surprise bill, I see this as a good thing for patients.
claw-el··on Health insurance claim denial rates range from 13% to 35% by insurer
I would watch out for insurance as an industry having to increase rates because successful claims rate are increasing much faster than the industry can handle.

Not supporting nor opposing the insurance industry, just something I think the public should watch out for and understand.

claw-el··on Health insurance claim denial rates range from 13% to 35% by insurer
If patients and doctors start using LLMs to strategize how to maximize claim approval rate, I wonder how would the insurance companies react to it. Would it start getting more strict and start requesting for more evidence?
claw-el··on The minimum viable unit of saleable software
If we can show that the hour of productivity saved is worth more, would the individual dev still want to build it because they like tinkering with it. The individual dev would value the time of playing with the code more than the time of productivity saved?
claw-el··on Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics
Also, a general purpose robot vs a custom purpose robot represent very different capital investment profile for the factories?
claw-el··on I Shipped a Facebook Feature So Fast Sheryl Sandberg Called an Emergency Meeting
> Sheryl was fine with that compromise. We shipped the feature.

Not trying to be a fan of any individual. But this, to me, is the difference between a fast moving team and a slow moving one. Teams being able to decide on the ‘right compromise’ on the fly is worth more than any expert you can hire.

claw-el··on If your product is Great, it doesn't need to be Good (2010)
People generally classify the opportunity cost as zero, and if you want to say no to the reasonably good ideas, others will put pressure on you to just do it.
claw-el··on The hacker sent by Anthropic to calm the government's nerves about AI safety
If the authorities see that you publicly and widely shout out that pitbulls are dangerous, but quietly tell me that you’ve spent a lot of effort training it not to be dangerous without sharing how in public, I think it is warranted for the authorities to be skeptical.
claw-el··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
For publicly listed company, isn’t marketing expense in the ‘Selling & Marketing Expense’ part under ‘Operating Expense’ and not part of ‘Cost of Revenue’ as well?
claw-el··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B

claw-el··on Don't trust large context windows
This lack of rigour feels a lot like “did you try restarting the computer? Most of the time, others tried restarting the computer and it works”
claw-el··on WhatsApp Business API pricing 2026: what's free and where markup hides
For SMS, the access to a specific consumer is often gated by a monopoly (that user’s telco provider) so they get to charge whatever they like. Therefore you see the variance (the greediness of individual telco). When WhatsApp join in the business messaging game, they want to maintain good relationship with the telcos and they also like the sweet margins they see they are making there.
claw-el··on How Terry Tao became an evangelist for AI in math
>”Oh, what's the unit? Do I care? I'm no fscking physics major!"

lol

claw-el··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Is “having values” just “stubborn” then?
claw-el··on Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore Story (2023)
>The truth is that Singapore has been lucky that Lee Kuan Yew and most of his successors have been good bureaucrats and politicians. That makes the ruling party also somewhat popular.

I don’t think this is only by luck. Singapore made the decision to ‘pay the bureaucrats well’ so that they can build a career on it. This attracts more people to be a bureaucrat. The alternative is that only already rich people become politicians and bureaucrats or bureaucrats only getting their bag by joining lobbying firm after their time in government.

IMO, the hard part about implementing this ‘pay the bureaucrats well’ system is that it is often hard to determine the market rate as there are often no equivalent roles in the private market.

claw-el··on Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore Story
The election happening once in a while helps ensure if the long term planning is still aligned with the population, because, new people will be born and some others will ‘age out’, the original long term planning might no longer represent the voice of this new set of population.
claw-el··on Lee Kuan Yew's Singapore Story (2023)
In comparison, another country considered to be a ‘flawed democracy’ also have governments exerting a heavy hand in redrawing the election map (even getting to Supreme Court) to ensure they keep their majority.
claw-el··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
What if it is not the terrorists naming them? What if it is a good samaritan trying to warn the pilot but this is the only way they can get a message out?
claw-el··on Why Japanese companies do so many different things
A hypothesis I had on why some countries have more conglomerates than US is that access to capital and funds are much harder in those countries in comparison to US. When access to capital is comparatively more limited, more innovations falls to the party that has comparatively easier access to capital (conglomerates) and therefore reinforcing their position as conglomerate.
claw-el··on OpenAI is connecting ChatGPT to bank accounts via Plaid
While I understand the risk of sharing sensitive information (e.g. bank login) with a 3rd party. But the current situation is such that your bank currently monopolize your bank information to improve your loan offer, to give you better service at better rate based on their understanding of your bank transaction history.

Currently, there is no aligned format for sharing your bank transaction history with other financial institution of your choice. Your current bank is the one who purposely makes it hard (only allowing you to share it through the same bank login) so that you are more locked-in in their eco system.

I used to work with Plaid as a provider, and you will notice certain banks who really do not like their customers using Plaid in sharing their bank transaction history with competitors will often have unscheduled maintenance that Plaid wouldn’t work so that you as a user would find friction using someone else and stay with only using products within their ecosystem.

I think the real question is less about why are we using Plaid to share our transaction information. If we are to have an open format to share our banking transaction history, what should be that format and what would be the lock and key for it?

claw-el··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
What happens (in Australia and in California) if rooftop solar and battery technology really have a huge breakthrough and the capacity of the major power generators were never utilized in the lifetime of those generators? Do consumers just ‘bail out’ the power generation companies?
claw-el··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
Hmmm, if you take a brick and mortar store, they have fixed costs to renovate and decorate the store, and they likely have capacity of the store that is not used during non-peak period as well. They charge for item sold, to cover for all costs they incurred for capacity of the store even during non-peak period as well. Is this an equivalent comparison? Don’t businesses generally roll in the fixed costs into their price and charge per unit still?
claw-el··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
Thank you for sharing this. I get that the company making the capital investment wants to get a return of 10% from their investment. The part I don’t understand is, why aren’t the return on investment being covered by the increased usage from the data centers (while the rate per usage stays flat)?

If the increase in usage (with rates staying flat) is insufficient to cover for the return on investment, then who is making the decision to take the risk for making these capital investment? The risk taker can definitely ‘pay’ for an over confidence in the market.

If it is because the increased usage of the grid as a whole reaches a step function requiring more investment, the system can have a gradually increasing usage price rate.

I am trying to find out if someone in the system is trying to eat up the benefits and publicly say “it’s because of AI” or maybe I am not understanding the situation well.

claw-el··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
Only allowed to charge “reasonable” usage fee means no other non-usage fee allowed or it is purposely designed to allow other kinds of fees?
claw-el··on Maryland citizens hit with $2B power grid upgrade for out-of-state AI
I am curious how electricity is priced. Why are more and more utility providers charge based on ‘infrastructure cost’ or ‘fixed platform fee’ instead of usage fee?
