ckuhl··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://www.ckuhl.com/weblog/

It's intentionally obtuse, like ripping out the first page out of a notebook, so that I don't have an excuse _not_ to fill out the rest of the pages. It's already ruined, so what is a bit more ruin, really?

I'm not trying to be the superlative at anything, but simply want to capture the traffic of anyone following in my footsteps, easing their path if that's possible.

ckuhl··on Draw an iceberg and see how it would float in water
And yet, what is harder to attain and yet more necessary than the knowledge and impetus to implement such a project?

It may not be necessary, but the specific tools are't the part that are necessary.

ckuhl··on JFrog S-1
I think the real problem is that in a lot of companies, there’s a huge institutional inertia towards adding a new supplier vs. paying an existing supplier slightly more.
ckuhl··on Lime shuts in 12 markets, lays off around 100
I think the biggest advantage scooters have over ebikes is that for a lot of people, there’s a place to store a scooter at both ends of a commute (under a desk) but not necessarily secure bike storage.
ckuhl··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
My bad, tried to do math before consuming coffee.
ckuhl··on Currency (Restrictions on the Use of Cash) Bill 2019
Not paying a middleman a percentage of the transaction would have some value to it.
ckuhl··on When a rewrite isn’t: rebuilding Slack on the desktop
I think it definitely depends on your use-case. Like you wrote, if everything else you have open also churns through battery life, it's unlikely having Slack open will make a difference.

However, if your other applications are a terminal, other efficient text editor (e.g. Sublime), and other generally respectful apps, I've found having Slack open is the difference between having enough battery life to work all day, and not.

ckuhl··on Apple has pushed a silent Mac update to remove hidden Zoom web server
I can’t find a reference of the top of my head, but I recall s Logitech mouse(!) also installed a local web server.
ckuhl··on Doing work locally minimizes problems with Electron apps
It definitely negatively affects the battery life of my 2018 MBP. Using only native applications, I can get a full days work done. If I have Slack open, usually I can only work until noon.
ckuhl··on BMW is accelerating electrification plans
The definition of what a suburban area is in North America vs. Europe are so different they really need different words.

A typical suburb in the US will have no public transportation, and be so sprawled out that bicycling or walking between places would be impossible for a working adult.

ckuhl··on Colleges improve website accessibility as they are defendants in lawsuits
To me that argument doesn't make sense... It seems like arguing that because there are wheelchairs that can climb staircases, there's no need to make buildings wheelchair accessible.

I thing the problem with this argument is that it shifts the burden of serving all people (including disabled people) from the company providing the service to a person who is disabled. That's exactly what the ADA was supposed to prevent.

ckuhl··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
The problem is that _everyone else uses Google_.

Even though I don’t use Google for search, my friends do and they’ll gladly share AMP pages with me.

ckuhl··on Sign In with Apple [video]
Do you ever wonder if Apple attracts the wealthiest mobile consumers because of the controlled user experience they provide?
ckuhl··on Apple Sign In
Companies could absolutely disallow / block it.

However they most likely won't for the same reason that people who are upset about Apple's 30% App Store cut still develop apps for iOS: they have their customers spend far more on average than other phone / OS users.

ckuhl··on A request to drill for lithium near Death Valley
From a nonexpert viewpoint, that sounds somewhat similar to how fracking works. Do you think there’s a similar risk of the ground settling as material is removed?
ckuhl··on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 released
Oh it definitely does. I remember seriously messing up a Linux Mint installation a while back because I upgraded all of the 3rd party dependencies that were preinstalled (because hey, newer is better, right?).
ckuhl··on Under-18s face 'like' and 'streaks' bans on social media
I think compared to the war on drugs, this would be incredibly effective.

Social media is all about network effects - the more your friends are on social media, the more you want (/need) to be on it to keep up with them.

Putting up a barrier won't stop _everyone_ from accessing the sites, but I feel like it will easily stop _enough_ that the network effect deteriorates and so it's not worth circumventing anyways.

ckuhl··on Nanaimo bar gets Canada Post stamp, but critics question base-to-filling ratio
I... I'm confused. They're permanent stamps. They always have the correct value.
ckuhl··on Sum-of-Three-Cubes Problem Solved for ‘Stubborn’ Number 33
In a way it makes sense - if the numbers all had smaller prime factors, they probably would have been found sooner than now, and so wouldn't be as remarkable
ckuhl··on Open Source Doesn’t Make Money Because It Isn’t Designed to Make Money
I have heard before (can't remember where) that a lot of companies won't donate to a project, but would gladly pay for "marketing" if the project simply listed companies that donated to them.

I'm not sure if that would be a feasible option, but I can definitely see the difference in value propositions.

ckuhl··on How Berea College Makes Tuition Free with its Endowment
That’s assuming the rest of the endowment isn’t reinvested. You’d need less than a 2% annual return on that $22B to fund the tuition in perpetuity.
ckuhl··on Building a Kickass Portfolio

Here's some other ones that I've collected and found cool interesting.

ckuhl··on Say yes to the progressive web

App Store on iOS feels safe
Does it feel safe or is it actually safe? A big part of Apple's competitive advantage is the quality it provides (real or perceived). If an app provides a subpar experience, they can yank it from the app store, whereas they have no recourse if a PWA starts e.g. cryptomining in the background.
ckuhl··on Flask 1.0 Released
That is a fair point. Since I was doing something kind of CMS focused, Django fit the bill. I suppose if you were doing something orthogonal to that, it would be better to have the flexibility of Flask.
ckuhl··on Flask 1.0 Released
The real value of Flask is that it makes you appreciate what Django does by default.

When I first started learning Python / web frameworks, I went with Flask because it was smaller and "simpler". As my project grew however, I had to organize it. I was basically imitating what Django gives you by default, though less cleanly.

ckuhl··on Facebook cannot act in your best interest
I would disagree that federated social networks would face the same pressure to increase time spent on their sites. By the nature of federation, a sort of marketplace of social sites would allow people to move to whatever serves them best (for whatever their definition of best is). So if a member of the fediverse starts feeding someone unenjoyable content, they could leave.
ckuhl··on Ask HN: How did your life change after you kicked Caffeine?
I recently actually decided to give up coffee for a time, after drinking it almost daily since high school.

For the me the biggest changed I noticed was how much more strict I need to be on my sleep schedule. Before I could have an extra espresso shot or three if I didn't get enough sleep. Now I have no way to compensate for my tiredness. So in response I've been way more aggressive at getting to bed at a good time.

ckuhl··on Image text recognition APIs showdown
I find it interesting that it looks like in at least one instance, Microsoft CS recognized the text upside down.

    Payloads -> speohed
ckuhl··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project that you would like to sell?

Can we please make this a recurring question
Wouldn't it be worth doing a trial period of manual posts first, to gauge the amount of interest?
ckuhl··on Lack of ethics education for computer programmers shocks expert
I'm a student currently majoring in business and in computer science and the difference between classes at the two schools is stark. To maintain one of its' business accreditations the school has to teach ethics in every single business class. By comparison not once have I ever heard a thing about ethics from any of my CS classes.

While I suppose you could argue that business students will be in positions of power, it feels out of place when every other student is.
