ck2··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
just a reminder that despite the endless billions spent on spy and war nonsense

US somehow felt empowered yet lost Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and within 800 more days Iran wars

oh and North Korea built an entire nuclear + missile program

you'd think there would be a change of spending/priorities, it's clearly pointless

ck2··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
nope

you mean NEW MODELS are being introduced with lighter faster foams

not the same model year to year

modern example: Saucony Endorphin Speed

v1 in 2020 was award winning

v2 in 2021 was almost the same, more praise

v3 bleh

v4 v5 bleh bleh

they cannot resist tampering

ck2··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
actually they were getting worse each year

most running shoe series get heavier year to year as manufacturers turn to cheaper materials and add cushioning to try to attract more adopters

it's almost universal, very few manufacturers seem to be able to resist tampering

(heavier shoes are slower, every three ounces is equal to another vo2max point lost)

ck2··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
wow that's the most repeat fallacy, I even see in political commercials now

we don't use domestic oil, we sell it overseas

and oil until pop-up "ai" datacenters was not used for power production

you are thinking about solar and wind power for coal's demise

which now they are also defunding, even worse reusing the funds for coal investment

ck2··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
well they are finding forever-chemical and micro-plastics in all freshwater in the USA now and even in ALL mother's milk

so safe bet that cancer rates are never going to be lower than they are today

remember US also just deregulated all pollution from power plants, funded re-starting coal plants and dropped car engine efficiency requirements

oh they are also trying to double oil-fracking output which toxifies groundwater and air for miles around it with offgassing

every rocket launch and deorbit by starlink et all also put toxic pollution into the atmosphere

so next decade should end well for cancer rates

ck2··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
PBS Space Time has a great explainer on EMP science and Starfish Prime

* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMjo_UY8vEM

Physics Explained channel had a good episode too but the math melted my brain

ck2··on US bans $1 Billion in Canadian imports, including alcohol, dairy and motorcycles
for the next 800 days

we are living in the absolute stupidest times

and I am not even sure how this is possible by the Executive without Congress so it's probably illegal like everything else he does

ck2··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
btw if a enemy of the US was to explode a nuclear weapon high enough in the atmosphere over the continental US to overcome the curvature of the earth

ala a targeted "starfish prime" event

it would take out virtually every power transformer on every pole

exhausting all replacements for years

no specialized EMP needed and no direct strike needed

not sure what would happen to homes hardwired with solar

oh it would also take out every satellite in orbit as they would pass through the new artificial allen belt

doubt China would do this, however Putin could get desperate enough if he starts to lose his war entirely

ck2··on When did Google get so weird?
if you just add &udm=14 to your query url (set in browser etc.)

you will not get "AI" results

     &udm=14
there's also a way to block the "AI" via a script url and even css
ck2··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
isn't the future Axial Flux motors

very small, very light (under 30 pounds for a car) with massive power and torque

no stator yoke, less or no rare-earths

ck2··on The Mars Delusion
neat

but it's at least a decade away from practical use

https://m.xkcd.com/678/

ck2··on The Mars Delusion
you wouldn't have even five to ten MONTHS on Mars

not unless there is a leap in shielding technology

and as someone 60, let me explain you have no idea how your shift in desire will become quality of life, less pain and suffering

but we'll actually get technology to improve aging and quality of life in aging way before humans are able to travel to Mars and live there

I mean what's there if you aren't going to survive?

Go live in a desert if you want a living challenge, it's same thing but far less radiation

ck2··on The Mars Delusion
it's not just "fraught with risk"

it's physically impossible with current technology for humans to survive a trip to Mars and live on the surface

space really, really wants to kill life

cosmic rays will kill humans before they even make it to Mars

there is no current technology that shields from cosmic rays

we should appreciate the earth greatly for its atmosphere and magnetosphere that shields us from them

best emulation idea so far is to surround astronauts with several feet of water

but we don't have the lift capacity for that much water weight

the total time on the moon outside the capsule per person maximum was 22 hours

the astronauts kept seeing bursts of light even with their eyes closed

when NASA inspected the helmets there were microscopic groove where some had made it all the way through

cosmic rays are physical particles traveling near the speed of light

the bursts of light were their nerves and other cells being destroyed by the cosmic rays

it was happening to their brains and CNS too

mice exposed to simulated cosmic rays became slow and stupid

ck2··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
lol China wouldn't bother bombing anyone

they'd just tell all their export ships to turn around and stop all exports

US would collapse in 30 days

it would be like the blockade US is doing to Cuba except 90% of every product we use and they wouldn't have to fire a single shot

they could also sell off the billions in US bonds and other assets

US economy would be utterly destroyed, we'd never recover because even the middle-class would be living out of their cars (now dead because all the parts for them are made in China)

ck2··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
America's future is delivery drivers

one out of every three people is going to be doing last mile delivery of some kind

they don't even need to be able to read english because they all ignore delivery notes, if GPS takes them off a cliff or to the wrong town they will happily follow it because they never learned to read a map

all b&m stores will go "dark warehouse"

how anyone is going to afford delivery I am not sure

but since you won't be able to afford health care or owning a home or even a car at some point, "spare cash" until you die young?

ck2··on Calculating atmospheric drag on satellites for a Cubesat [pdf]
could LEO sats have pitot tubes? would they work at ultra-low drag?

my Stryd has a pitot tube and can detect 1mph wind fairly accurately

some advanced drones also have pitot tubes

ck2··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
so, counter-example, one murder of a child by a gun is too many

except there now have been hundreds if not thousands of those murders

the gun argument against regulation is "it's a right and it would bother too many legit rights"

so same energy, "voting is a right and would bother too many legit rights"

there you go

let me know when guns are harder to get than voting

and when child murders by gun are fewer than "illegal votes"

then we can talk

DOJ just ordered teenagers can buy handguns, soon by US mail, good luck with that

do you understand how many billions are being spent on this voter blocking effort?

how many dollars per voter do you want to spend? it's currently hundreds per voter

so find each accidental "illegal vote" is literally costing MILLIONS to find

and there is NOTHING stopping an audit AFTER a close election and reversing the result in courts

but can't undo the child murder, ever

ck2··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
the way you know there weren't actually "hundreds of cases" is that by now there would have been DOJ prosecutions to prison of each and every one and thousands of hours of coverage on FOX et al

also if they weren't citizens they would have been deported by now

that's how we know none of the claims are true

I mean think about what's gone down the past year, citizens grabbed and disappeared by ICE for weeks, people deported to third countries they've never been to and have US travel warning for extreme danger

you think a single voting fraud wouldn't be on FOX every single night and the front page of whitehouse .gov?

it's all noise

and the irony is it's the 50% of citizen latino voters that put them in power in the first place, it's why the total panic now to scare them off from the polls when they change their minds

ck2··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
hacked, copied and distributed to countries that are trying to harm us in 3, 2, 1

remember Heritage Foundation spent a small fortune to try to find illegal voting over the past decades and they only found a handful of cases, most accidental and not willful and far too few to cause any effect at all

if the Dems get the Senate somehow and don't immediately pass laws to protect voting against actions of the Executive, well then they deserve to lose 2028

of course he'll veto everything but there might be enough will to override

ck2··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
isn't holographic universe a similar concept to string theory in that they both propose higher dimensions projecting into lower dimensions

string theory, 11 dimensions, is bonkers though, it's what happens when people are too smart for their own good imho lol

ck2··on Classified Estimates Show the NSA Is Paying Billions to Test AI Models
the day NSA cracks AES the world is going to get soooo weird

I wonder how long it takes to decrypt 20 years worth of stored internet traffic

day per year? week? certainly not a month per year

everyone is focused on "AI" but there have been some significant quantum computer advancements

ck2··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
when you injure or kill someone disabled who didn't hear your car and the investigators find that you disabled the sound, you will do time, it's literally a law

tire noise at slow speed is not enough

but some cars do seem to have a good noise and some a bad noise

ck2··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
can we get a car that doesn't self-drive or phone-home?

just replace all the gas burning, oil dripping parts

electric cars also produce way less brake dust particulates, so it's a win all around

just stop trying to make a car a smartphone

ck2··on US plan for 90 day diesel export ban could have significant impact on Europe
are there a lot of passenger cars in Europe that use diesel?

or it like US where it is mostly semis and delivery trucks (and buses)

I am really hoping $7 diesel ends as many diesel trucks in the US as possible, as someone who is on the road on foot or bike daily, diesel particulates are the most toxic pollution on the roads and that include brake dust and tire particles (by volume)

It is the nastiest fuel and needs to go away even if it's not replaced completely by electric

ck2··on US preparing to ban exports of diesel fuel for 90 days
what blows my mind is one of out three voters will insist "this is fine"
