cjsawyer··on Tales of the M1 GPU
I didn’t make myself clear enough, I was talking about people brushing off the core concept as intrinsically unfeasible. Obviously their specific version is tonedef and lacking features but the baseline concept is proven valid by those other versions.
cjsawyer··on Tales of the M1 GPU
It’s a side effect of where the early avatar creating tools had their development effort focused. Now it’s just a weird cultural thing.
cjsawyer··on Tales of the M1 GPU
The opinions around facebook’s metaverse are hilarious when things like Second Life, WoW, EVE, VR Chat, and even Roblox have been so massively popular yet unrecognized for what they are.

This trust is exactly why Reddit sucks now.
cjsawyer··on Project Babylon
What if, instead of a gun which imparts massive accelerations on the payload, we instead use something with lesser acceleration. I’m thinking of a hybrid between an elevator, a slingshot, and a railgun. The point here is to get to escape velocity without a huge acceleration. The payload would sit on a platform lowered deep into a vertical shaft, counterbalanced by a relatively heavy mass suspended from the other side of a pulley. The start of the launch would involve dropping the mass and after hitting terminal velocity of the payload/mass system, the railgun-like magnetic acceleration would start. At the end, just the launch vehicle would come flying out of the hole and into space.

Have I run any numbers? No. But I’m going to!

Cool site, but I almost missed the content. I’m on mobile and just scrolling for pictures I blew past the index and saw

> Wait for it! > Look for the first installment soon!

You might want change that into a big “next article” button or something :)

cjsawyer··on Subtractive Color Mixture Computation (2021)
It’s odd to me to criticize an old article using the existence of newer software as your point. I thought this was an interesting read.
cjsawyer··on iCloud for Windows downloading other people's photos
That’s what the photos page on icloud.com does unless you specifically request the original format
cjsawyer··on Gamification affects software developers: Cautionary evidence from GitHub
Don’t blame the users for wanting to change a predatory system. They’ve already identified the problem — telling them to simply ignore it is dismissing their humanity. We’re not machines and need to work inside those constraints
cjsawyer··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Companies aren’t your friends. They exist to maximize what customers will pay in exchange for the minimum effort on their part.
cjsawyer··on DevOps: An idea so good, no one admits they don’t do it
I miss being able to actually refuse an update. Or even being able to disable them!

cjsawyer··on USB knob box doubles as a Blackmagic Designs camera remote
I’ve built something very similar. It uses an Arduino Pro Micro and the HID library. It uses a large knob as a scroll wheel. Now I’m so used to it that scrolling without my extra off-hand device feels awkward and slow. Easily my most useful project
cjsawyer··on Lightyear One
It would also benefit ICE vehicles. If you could run the AC while parked instead of idling that’d be a win

cjsawyer··on Show HN: Penumbra, a perceptually optimized color palette based on natural light
I am having trouble seeing a visible difference between half of the colors in the data visualization images. As far as I know, I don’t have any color vision issues. The green, cyan, and magenta colors all look basically the same. Am I alone here?
cjsawyer··on Repurposing the cadaver of a spider to create a pneumatically actuated gripper
Is using the corpse of a bug predator really a good way to capture bugs? It seems like that’s something they’d be likely run away from.
cjsawyer··on Writing one sentence per line
I love the irony of using a two sentence opening paragraph to sing the praises of not using paragraphs.

Good advice though ;)

cjsawyer··on Physicists are building neural networks out of vibrations, voltages and lasers
Have we checked to see if this is already the case?
cjsawyer··on After millennia of expansion, the world has passed ‘peak agricultural land’
In the extreme case, this is something we’ll need to figure out for space exploration too. Hopefully people are working on it!
cjsawyer··on Student Startup ‘Limber’ Makes 3D-Printed Prostheses Affordable and Accessible
I wonder how much overall cost it would add to use the prints as the mold in lost-mold casting of aluminum or something. Would make them significantly longer lasting.

Not in customer hands yet but yes, webrtc with a WSS to signal. It’s been incredibly reliable

cjsawyer··on Apple’s hidden flight tracker app
I was shocked when I accidentally selected text out of an image. You’d think they’d make a bigger deal about cool changes
cjsawyer··on The quest for fusion energy
Speaking of fruit, I’m interpreting this as an apples and oranges situation. If we’re talking about trust of the engine that’s one thing, but holding back a launching rocket is different. That is the absolute worst case for the rocket (and best case for the rod) due to the weight of the heavy fueled up rocket fighting the trust along with the rod

cjsawyer··on What Artists Notice
I think that there’s a difference between just seeing something and taking it in deeply enough to carry the information into their minds eye and then transfer that onto a canvas through finger movements. I’m absolutely no expert here but it seems like the physical reproduction step (moving paint around) is secondary to the skills involved with the first step, even if that’s what people equate to being an artist.
cjsawyer··on List Of Adhesive Tapes
Seconded. Might have been my particular brand, but it left an oily stain in the corners of all my posters. I’ve sworn off it
