cjoelrun··on Why do new cars look like wet putty?
As a millennial: I like these colors. They seem to make no statement at all and be unoffensive. The world around my seems very easily offended and the last thing I want to do is stand out with some sort of color opinion that might say something about my belief in anything at all. Putty colors sounds right to me. I'd like my choices to be moldable into whatever might be in fashion.
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Am I the only one not caring about GitHub Copilot?
Ahh yeah two points got mushed together. I agree they should fight for their IP. I meant more that the value of their snippet of code will go down as others fill in with their own IP.
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Am I the only one not caring about GitHub Copilot?
Why should I care if you care. If you value your time you'll maybe be interested in having it write unit tests for you (It worked for me™). If you value protecting intellectual property you might care that it's sucking up a lot of it and making available to people who do care. I think it's a losing game because there's enough people willing to give it their intellectual property for free that by the time your get your stuff removed it's already found something similar somewhere else (Drainage my boy!)

It usually does in a bubble.
cjoelrun··on Apple countersues Epic, seeks punitive damages
Isn't a better analogy that car dealerships deserve revenue for selling Toyota's cars? Running an app store and providing a safe platform for users isn't free right?
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: 9-5 Burnout?
I remember hearing a similar line about boxes from Kanye West's Yeezy Campus GQ interview.
cjoelrun··on GraphQLize: JVM library to build GraphQL API instantly from PostgreSQL and MySQL
Looks like early day project. Had this exact project in mind when working with Postgraphile. JVM tooling around databases are amazing. Using clojure on top of that foundation with honey-sql was something I wish existed. Good luck! I might look into helping build it someday.
cjoelrun··on GraphQLize: JVM library to build GraphQL API instantly from PostgreSQL and MySQL
Interested in comparing with Postgraphile. Besides JVM vs TypeScript.
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
Tried out Shinobi, Motion Eye, Zoneminder, and Blue Iris. Ended up using Zoneminder due to easy mobile usage (not Shinobi, or MotionEye on iOS) and being docker friendly (not Blue Iris).

Hardware: raspberry pi zero running gstreamer rtsp streams. Didn't want to deal with all the terrible cameras phoning some random server.

Mobile App: zmNinja. $5.00. Worth it in my opinion. Motion notifications, event montage review, live streams, everything I need. HomeAssistant assists in enabling motion detection recording when our phones are not detected at home.

cjoelrun··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free
Probably because accountants aren't silly enough to work for free.
cjoelrun··on Google collects face data now – what it means and how to opt out
Is the difference the use of unique identifiable info?
cjoelrun··on Chorded keyboard
I used one of these for a few months. I used it to write while walking around the mall or other mindless walking. It was pretty cool. I'll probably break it out again, was difficult to use for programming because lots of characters require custom chords I never got to making.
cjoelrun··on Apple Card
The now discontinued USAA Limitless Cash Back Rewards Visa.
cjoelrun··on Apple Card
Anybody planning on using this? Is it due to privacy or convenience (app stuff)? My current card get's 2.5% back on everything, plus other cards with rotating 3-5% categories. Not sure I will just to this just due to that .05%.
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: What backpack are you using?
I love that there's no wasted space to "organization". I found all my backpacks wasted so much space with padded pockets I didn't need. The benefits of being able to customize with packing cubes or molle attachements allow this bag to carry more than bags larger than it.
cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Do you use digital ink to create handwritten notes? Why or why not?
Used iPad Pro for a while. It was alright. Mostly type out notes into emacs org mode now. If I write anything I immediately scanbot it into Dropbox.

I got over the tactile feel. It’s not a big deal. Only annoying part was a dead pencil. New iPad design should be a lot better. Kind of tempted.

cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Best Command-Line Applications?
Music organizer/player http://beets.io

File browser https://github.com/ranger/ranger

Emacs - It does anything you want.

Emacs If you like vim keys bindings - http://spacemacs.org

Terminal multiplexer - Tmux

cjoelrun··on Ask HN: What sucks about where you live?
San Antonio, TX

1) Sprawl - Like most Texas cities homes are moving farther and farther from city center. You can ignore all this and live in the city which I do, but interacting with anyone not apart of the same mindset will take 30-45 mins drive. At least I can live near downtown for < 250k, apt ~800.

- This affect public transportation options. Expect a couple 1/2 hr hub to hub bus stops.

- Good food is limited and spread out

2) Entertainment - Not a huge music scene

3) It's hot.

4) Airport doesn't have many direct flights

cjoelrun··on Apple and Google Face Growing Revolt Over App Store ‘Tax’
You can release an executable that can run on Windows, Linux, or OS X without Steam. You can't release an executable that can run on iOS or Android without going through the App Stores.

Using a bank and had similar experiences. BBVA flagged flights booked on Southwest as gambling. Nothing they could do about it.

cjoelrun··on Ask HN: What do you consider resume red flags?
> When sending your document, try sending a PDF but not a .docx

Is that a suggestion or a red flag?

cjoelrun··on AWS AppSync – Build data-driven apps with real-time and offline capabilities
Having used graph.cool I can say there's a significant amount of lock-in. Authorization can be pretty specific to the implementation and often impacts your schema. Secondly the extensions that have a lot of the logic are implemented differently every time. AppSync uses Apache Velocity Template Language (VTL), seems like a huge lock-in there. Don't be fooled by the GraphQL sticker, there's a significant amount of lock-in if you go with any of the SaaS(BaaS) products.
cjoelrun··on Analysts argue that over-automation is to blame for Tesla problems
Hopefully he can generalize their automation developments. Seems like this would have to be a bigger play then just the Model 3 at this point.
cjoelrun··on Google Flutter and AWS Lambda for a serverless mobile app
Flutter doesn't do what I feel React Native does best, rendering down to native components for Android and iOS (also web/tvOS). Flutter seems to render to custom view components so for better or worse your apps will probably look the same on all platforms. It's interesting to see what projects Google is using Flutter though, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Fuchsia
